Back in the day, when the bit between Tower Bridge and London bridge was known as the Port of London, Tower Bridge used to open to allow cargo ships in to discharge at the warehouses. I was born in Vine Lane off Tooley Street. I’ll never go back to London because it’s nothing like I remember.

This blows my little Londoner’s mind !! - I spent many many years in Kennington and can remember driving around and parking anywhere no problem ! And what have they done to it !! And they awful big bloody building with useless fans ugh - I worked at the Thomas A’Beckett pub on the Old Kent Road too so this has been wonderful !! thanks so much for your great videos !!! I sat watching saying ooh look I know that street !! Lol

Just got to say how I so agree 100% with everything you said about London. I'm a born and bred Londoner and proud to be so, but I moved away in '96 and sad to say I could never go back again except maybe for the odd visit. More of the look of our heritage should have been retained in the development of modern property. Times must move on, but new development should be in-keeping. Great video👍

An interesting and depressing video, Martin. I was born in 1933 and raised and worked in and around London up until the 80s. Thank goodness I experienced it before it was completely destroyed.. It seems like the architects and planners were given carte blanche to do as they pleased and erect monstrosities. If I went back there after living for over thirty years in Thailand I would be like a foreigner and completely lost. All very sad. But then Bangkok is just as guilty. Thank goodness I live out in the sticks. And two pies is more than enough you greedy bugger!😉

My family originate from the Old Kent Road/Walworth area. I wasn't brought up there but used to work around the corner from The Cut. One of my aunts lived in East Street. I loved Sundays down East Lane. I believe my [maternal] Grandad had a Stall there, probably in the late 40s/50s, selling Sarsaparilla. I go back to visit family by train. Each journey never fails to dishearten me. Every last inch of space has a tower block bring built on it, even right next to the rail lines. Sad....only saving grace is seeing all the lovely Victorian terraces. Do I miss London? Yes, but 'My' London of old. As a teenager in the 70s there was nowhere better to live in my eyes. Oh how we miss that life!!

Sharon shivered when she went into Margaret clitheroes house… I will say that I went to York and went to the house … around 20 years ago and as I stepped inside I got an overwhelming feeling of peace and calm , it has since become a shrine as it wasn’t then it was an empty room. Took me back a bit when Sharon shivered 👌🏼👍🏼

Only the UK and it's gormless authorities are hell bent on destroying the past and our wonderful heritage I'm afraid. Other countries seem to value their past and achievements. The towers of glass and steel ate quite monstrous in my view and a l think the construction more responsible for subsidence and damage to the old buildings than climate change is. I'd planned to visit London when I retired a little while back but, like Martin I cannot do with all the herding people about and pushing and a shoving. The prices are quite eye watering too. Tracey did so well keeping the children together and being so calm. The Butlers have wonderfully behaved grandchildren and it's so good that they are encouraged to have a try at everything, none of this faddy eaters rubbish. Further more-- how dare anyone have a strop at the Matriarch- Sharon on the train down!! Who? Where? The Empire will get them!!

Martin, How I agree with you totally about the changing face of London and our country. Baby boomers born and brought up in NW London until early 70's when we moved out to Nth Herts. Best thing we ever did. I continued to work into London for short periods until 2000's and across East Anglia and saw it change for the worse. Even the leafy middle class suburbs I knew have declined and now look tatty. Our heritage and buildings have been destroyed and pushed aside in the name of big business. Instead tall buildings should have been confined to areas such as Docklands, just like in Paris where there is little high rise in the centre. Your family and grandchildren are a credit to you both, well behaved and a pleasure to watch and I guess take out on excursions. Both my wife and I enjoy all your various videos and travelogues. Keep up the good work in The Wolds. Kindest regards Geoff C East Sussex

Obviously London lost a lot of its History in the Blitz which is part of the reason why Cities like Paris look more cohesive/ beautiful, plus it has built up slowly, largely keeping the original road structure even after the Great Fire, whereas Medieval Paris was flattened by Haussmann (I am not a Londoner but feeling a bit defensive! 😀). But I agree decades of planning since has been so badly done, many parts have been ruined, the buildings won’t last, always about the money. Glad you got to see some of the Roman history which has lasted, there is quite a lot in the Square Mile. Great place to do some church crawling in. Great Vlog, thanks for sharing. Also Museum of London Docklands good free place to take kids.

@dougaldouglas8842 I went to Paris a few years ago, a lot of organised walking tours so I guess it was just the best bits. It’s obvious from the news that however it looks, that the city has problems. I lived in London over twenty years ago after Uni but realised it is only a nice place to live for those with the good fortune to have a home in a nice area. Still enjoy visiting, there is so much history still.

Tower blocks are everywhere now - I live in West London, and i fyou drive up the A40 into town, there are masses of towers all close together, hideous 40 or 50 floors and more structures and they're building yet more... we all hate them. And the worst thing is, they are the highest polluting form of building, they only last 50 to 60 years and will need to be demolished at that point. Which might not be a bad thing, as it goes, maybe they;ll build something more in keeping with old London, something more attractive for people to live in.

Whilst a lot you say is true re architecture (far, far to many glass high rise buildings - look at the disaster down the Thames from Waterloo to Wandsworth) London is still a brilliant place to live - I’ll never leave, as Londoners we know where to go and not go and avoid the tourists. There are still loads of free places to go to and not everyone rips you off. As for the noise I love it the countryside is far too quiet. Brilliant as usual keep up the good work

Really enjoyable video. I'm from South East London, if you're ever back in the area go to Baldwins in Walworth Road (SE17) home of Sarsparella. Its a health food shop that's been there for decades, I'm 60 and I used to go there as a kid. You can buy it by the pint and its like a pub. In East Street market (The Lane) they sell it hot in the winter. If you're ever in Greenwich go to Goddards for Pie n mash, really good. You can then catch the riverboat to Westminster. Really different seeing London from the river, beautiful. Health & Happiness to you & your family 👍💯
