one of the best eps of tv i've ever seen. the reason why angel goes back to the hotel is that he went past it in the previous episode while traveling in the sewers. You can see him hesitate because he's remembering it.

People used to live in hotels all the time. Things have changed a lot since then. "Until about 1960, however, a majority of hotel keepers not only offered travelers rooms for the night but also provided rooms or suites for permanent residents who rented by the month."

I read that the writers based the Hyperion Hotel on the famous Ambassador Hotel in LA. It has since been torn down, but the hotel was a home to movie stars, presidents, and foreign dignitaries for many years. Also the Cocoanut Grove Nightclub was were six Oscar ceremonies were held. The hotel also had a dark history because Senator Robert Kennedy was shot and killed there in 1968.

My favorite episode of the series and third favorite overall of the Buffyverse. Angel drinks human blood from a bottle while having a soul in this 1952 era. I theorize he drinks human blood from the moment he turns into a vampire until BtVS 2x07 _Lie to Me_ when Buffy gives him a look and asks him if he can deliver the hospitals blood bags (which vampires attempted to steal) safely back to the hospital (with a time away drinking rat blood as shown in the _Becoming_ flashbacks). I have thistheory because in BtVS 1x07 _Angel,_ he had bagged human blood in the refrigerator when Darla opened it, and by BtVS 3x19 _The Prom,_ he was buying pig's blood from a butcher. I think Buffy, whether intentional or not, guilted him into changing his dietary habits with that look she gave him in BtVS 2x07 _Lie to Me,_ just like the idea of helping her got him off rat blood. Angel in the flashbacks of 1952 is a very anti-social, not-caring frame of mind, person/vampire (Angel doesn't care about the suicide and goes back to drinking his human blood). Judy changes Angel's attitude, then betrays him to the mob of hotel guests and workers. Thus Angel's anti-social, not-caring attitude allows for the demon to win. But could Angel have won even if he played hero? No. Because he either gives everyone to the demon (as what did happen anyway), or he says he's alive after they "hung" him and that creates paranoia to feed the demon. The demon wins either way. Judy was a great single episode character. She felt bad, but the paranoia the demon gave her drove her actions. Once said paranoia was gone (nearly fifty years later), she apologized and Angel forgave her. That earning forgiveness and getting it exchange is the heart of the main theme to the show. It makes Judy a fantastic single episode character for more than one reason. Wesley's paranoia is so funny.

It's interesting to see this episode and then go back to Buffy season 1, and realize how much Angel has changed since then. He was still drinking human blood then, and was too afraid to go down to the Master's lair. He had a soul for 100 years but didn't become a champion until he fell in love with Buffy.

Are You Now or Have You Ever Been many fans rate as one of the best episodes of the series. It's is very similar in tone to the BTVS episode I Only Have Eyes For You. I think it is definitely one of the top ten episodes in the whole Buffyverse. A superb plot, this could have been a whole movie on its own, with the backdrop of the McCarthyite Communist witch hunts of the 1950s. Judy's story is heart breaking, superb from Tim Minear who was involved in many of the best Angel episodes, he also wrote for the X-Files as well. We see of course the group now move into the hotel, which becomes the great iconic base for operations. 'We're Moving In'.

Tim should have earned an Emmy nomination for this episode, which is David Boreanaz's favorite of the show. It's a seamless blend of Rod Serling, Alfred Hitchcock, Nicholas Ray, James Ellroy, Walter Mosley and Bram Stoker, both entertaining and socially conscious. Sadly, the second part makes it timeless.
