I dont understand why the templates arent simply applied AS the new asphalt is put down before the asphalt has been rolled. Asphalt is very hot at that point and maleable.

It would take forever to compact. The mat is only small. You would need a mat as big as the driveway. We have tried stamping a day old driveway, and the mat pulls some pave up with it. We just did a driveway that was 3 years with no issues.. I do wish the mats were stiff and not cable .

@@gregvickers3681 what about using diesel on the cable stamp to keep the asphalt from sticking to it?

Fresh asphalt is plenty soft to imprint, but is overall too weak and tender so it tears when removing the stamp. Asphalt gets stiffer over time because: (1) compacted more under traffic, (2) "volatiles" in the asphalt binder evaporate after first month or so, (3) asphalt binder hardens (ages) from oxidation and UV exposure.

@@samwilliams7814 Yah, that would help, but might be hard to apply with all that surface area. On older asphalt, not sure if it's necessary. Most of this stuff is on city-owned or privately-owned developments. Be aware, if it's a state-owned project, that many states don't allow diesel as a release agent.
