Facts. Every focal length under 50mm is worthless, it distorts the subject to the point of unrecognizability, especially when shooting people or basically anything with a form or surface. 50mm is alright, 85mm is perfect.

I think 8mm is objectively the best focal length. You can get great landscape shots, but it's also great for portraits and especially wildlife and sports shooting. You just have to get a little closer which should not be a problem with wild animals at all

You both are right: there is a "best" focal length to capture a certain subject and tell a story in a certain way. You want to isolate the subject? 85/135 But you want to get the big picture? 35/50. Afordability is something you just touched lightly, the 50 is so affordable there's no way you can touch that with any other focal length. So I'm declaring the 50 the best focal length!

I have to say, my favourite FF focal length is 65mm. A bit of an odd choice but I really enjoy the compression you can get, where it's a bit closer to an 85mm, but at a slightly wider angle closer to a 50mm. Great for 2 shots. I was very excited when Sigma announced their 65mm Cine T1.5, and I hope they will bring an AF, affordable version to Sony E or Canon EF soon. Would be nice if it had a good MFD too. Fantastic show, glad to see you guys over on Petapixel. I'm very much enjoying this more comedic style as the channel draws to a close.

I have always loved and frantically enjoyed to use my ef 50mm f1.8 with my Canon 6D for 10 years and that focal length is extremely versatile and produces extremely charming and memorable results. All the lovely photos I have taken fall within the focal lengths of 50 to 150 mm, thus, I partially agree with Chris' opinion. And sometimes, a 35mm focal length would include too many distractions into the frame and you got to deal with so many unnecessary elements in a 35mm focal length. The only primes you need when traveling are 50mm and 85mm with a full-frame camera.

I like 20mm and 40mm a lot, the tamron 20-40mm f2.8 zoom is bright enough and small enough to make me not want primes anymore. 24mm is often not wide enough for me and going wider than 20mm (say a 17-35 at 17) just adds too much distortion. I also like the 135mm for faces, studio type shots, anything with shallow depth of field. I guess I'd be happy if I could just shoot at those 3.

As far as a pleasing look, I agree that the 85mm is the king. You can't go wrong with it IF you have enough room to work with. If I could only shoot with one focal length it would be at 50mm because it's way more practical to use and offers a more natural look. If I need to go wide then it's the 24mm all day long. My least favorite is 35mm because it doesn't quite me the compression (bokeh) I like and it's not quite wide enough to capture a scene. It feels very plain to me.

@lsamoa You're right. It's just that I have yet to see great bokeh from a 35mm lens and I feel that it's because it sits in a no man's land of the compression zone. A 24mm seems to keep enough in focus so it's rarely an issue and as you get closer to your subject, things tend to blur together much more pleasingly to my eyes.

"Pentax is the best camera manufacturer." - that was my favourite moment. This was brilliant, and I love that it's gotten 612 comments, including mine.

This was great. I have to go with Chris on this episode as he had, by far, the most creative insults (e.g. the mistake was the lens taking Jordan on the trip. Hilarious!). As for lens focal lengths, I like a high quality zoom for travel, but primes for street photography. When I use a prime it's typically 28mm, 35mm or 50mm. Alas I agree with Jordan about the versatility of 35mm and would travel with that one if I had to use a prime.

Chris in his pompous ass mode is always comedy gold - that comment about calling the lens was the real gut buster. The only thing which would have made the video funnier is if their puppet stand-ins had done the arguing.

Another fun video. Great work guys. I have to vote with Chris for 85mm over 35mm because of the kind of photos I take, which are mostly portrait type shots at family gatherings. I like to get head and shoulder shots and with 85mm you are not too close to your subject. With 35mm the camera is right in the person's face, which is intimidating. My 85mm mostly stays on my main camera body

Chris is right, the new Fuji 56mm f1.2 (85mm FF) is glorious. Jordan is also right, the Fuji 90mm f2 (135mm FF) is also glorious. Let's agree that Fuji rules!

bird photography mostly, but for causal shooting the 17 mm of the m4/3 = 35 mm is my favorite. also loved the 75 mm 1.8 form Olympus for landscapes. sorry i am not taking sides, LOL. great video boys, you are so funny and great photographers.

But admit it. The 35mm lens is terrible for bird photography right!

I have had pretty much every prime between 14 and 135mm and concur with Jordan on the 35mm. 40mm is the true ideal but much harder to get in the right configuration.

I ADORE my Sigma 40mm f/1.4 Art lens for Sony-E mount. It's the one I would keep if I had to get rid of all my lenses but 1. It's wider than 50 and while not far off from 35 it just hits me better than the 35.

I have lenses from 16mm through to 200mm and the simple answer is the lens that fits what you are shooting. Personally I hate the 50mm, I just find it boring but I still use it, when needed. If I could only choose one lens to keep though it would probably be the 58mm. It is just long enough to be able to take nice portraits. It is pretty fast (down to 0.95) and it is the ideal lens for 2 person portraits.
