This is a great pattern. I stopped doing the segmented body and just use a strip of foam ( leave a lot of these on reeds...) Nice pattern. I've shied away from tying these for bass and bream because the wing tends to make the fly spin during casts. This wing looks like it should cast just fine.
@SavageFlies3 жыл бұрын
Yes! I know exactly what you're talking about. I haven't fished this exact one but I have had that problem with some feather wing dragonfly patterns. And, the feathers are usually so flexible that sometimes they'll get wrapped behind the hook bend.

Excellent,
@FlyTyer19483 жыл бұрын
Good one. Very useful tips - never thought of waxing the needle or folding the foam over (usually insert the needle in the foam or wrap the bucktail around it), & gluing the outside of the wings. I would test using Flexament & flexible UV resin on the wings to see which one was better. Are you using 1 mm foam or 2 mm?
@SavageFlies3 жыл бұрын
Great idea Bob. This is 2mm foam. But in some of the dragonflies I tied last year (they're usually a little thicker) I did sandwich a piece of different color 1mm foam in it and it gave it a nice looking stripe down the sides. Re the Flexament, I've still got your email to digest on that one but will be placing an order within a week or so for sure. :-)
@scottnock52413 жыл бұрын
Matt, sweet.. Why do you want the wing harder? In my mind I want to be able to powder that up to keep it floating, never fished a damsel so I don’t know hell I honestly have never seen a trout take one!! Nope., I’d like to get one to eat now!!!
@SavageFlies3 жыл бұрын
Great question Scott! First, for a synthetic material like this there isn't much need to gink it up or shake it in a desiccant. One backcast that the thing is practically dry. But stiffening the wings on a pattern like this will keep them from getting wet and sticking to the side of the fly. And if they flop around too much, they will have a tendency to get caught behind the hook and then it would look like a one-wing dragon or damsel fly. Having the wings sticking out mostly perpendicular to the hook will mostly avoid both those scenarios. (I learned this through experience of tying feather wing ones that are really hard to fish and cast.)

Matt, another great pattern. Looks simple. One question…. What is the synthetic for the wing? Is there a trade name or is it something from a craft store? Thx. Ok … google helped me. For the hard core entomologists….Damselflies are smaller than a dragonfly, at rest they close their wings and their eyes do not touch at the top of head. Their flight is weak and fluttering, they don't engage in aerial combat. Dragonflies are larger than damselflies. At rest their wings remain open and their eyes touch at top of head.

Interesting Dragon Fly ? ... Foam body , Yarn dubbing , Wool wings , UV resin and Polyester thread ... oh , and a Feather .... What happened to the traditional 4 Exotic dead animal materials you Tiers always use ? ... Isn't using Synthetics breaking tradition for you guys ? ... I saw a guy and his kid , catch fish with bits of garbage he found on the bank ... So you have to wonder , why you fly tiers need such Exotic Feathers and animal hairs to make a fancy Fly ? ... When you could make a Fly out of an old pair of socks , a chip bag and hair from your head , dog , cat or budgie ? ... But where is the Profit in that ? :D ... Cheers !
@SavageFlies Жыл бұрын
Hi Robert. I've never heard of the "4 exotic dead animal materials" rule you mention. There are a few tiers out there who shy away from using synthetics but for the most part today's modern tiers don't hesitate to mix synthetic and natural. And to your last question, we don't *need* exotic feathers and furs to make fancy flies. In fact, we don't even need to tie flies at all. Most of us do it as a hobby. For the craftsmanship and artistry of it. And because we enjoy it. :-) From this comment you sound like you're not a tier. If you're a fly fisherman, you should consider giving it a try! I find it to be quite a rewarding hobby. Even therapeutic at times.

I've never seen that Joe, but that does remind me of another story. I was at the top of a mountain in Hawaii (one of the few remaining wild trout streams there), and there were a bunch of HUGE dragonflies flying around. I'm talking six inches long. They looked like drones. So I try fishing the only one I had with me and it was about half the size of these naturals. The first time I cast to water where they're flying around, one of them swoops down and grabs my fly and takes off with it. He got about 20 feet away before the weight of my fly line snagged it out of his clutches. But holy cow, that was a first for me. It happened a couple more times that day too. :-)
