THIS IS THE LAST DAM RUN OF LIKKER I'LL EVER MAKE
The original cult classic that made moonshiner Popcorn Sutton famous.
Filmed and released in 2002. Remastered in 2012.
available on DVD as a special feature with THE LAST ONE,
from www.suckerpunchpictures.com
Popcorn Sutton had made a home movie of himself making moonshine in 1998, which he sold on VHS tape out of his Maggie Valley Junk shop, at the bend of the road heading out of town towards Soco Gap and Cherokee. The film had the same title as his self-penned book, "Me and My Likker," and was re-released by Sutton in 2009 as "Popcorn Sutton Making Likker a Long Time Ago." After working with Neal Hutcheson on the documentary film Mountain Talk (released in 2002), the two teamed up to produce a new film with Popcorn making moonshine. Hutcheson produced the first cut for Popcorn to sell and it was available for many years exclusively on VHS tape from the man himself. The footage was reworked into the Emmy award-winning PBS release "The Last One" (released in 2008) However, the legend of the original film, "last run," was growing even as it was becoming almost impossible to find. The film was remastered and released as a bonus feature with the 10th anniversary edition of "The Last One" in 2012.

As someone who has actually known someone who could make liquor, I had a ball watching this. It brought back a lot of old memories from childhood. Once he got older he couldn't make liquor anymore so he started growing weed. He did what he had to do to survive. He had no formal education. There's not a chance in hell anyone would hire him for a job. He had a speech issue and couldn't talk plain. Thank God he was never busted. He lived life on his own terms. Did what it took to survive and died a free man. Instead of having compassion for people like this, people want to call them criminals and put them in jail. It's sickening really.

@scottsawyer6245 I know exactly what you're talking about. I saw cops ruin people's lives in the small town I grew up in over women, old family disputes, and out of just plain jealousy as well. I saw them try to make criminals out of a lot of people just minding their own business, not hurting anyone, and just doing what it took to survive.

This is actually a beautiful documentary. The skill of distilling, the hard work, all of that aside... what makes this so beautiful to me is being able to hear him and understand the culture Popcorn lived in. It makes me think of my grandparents and how they talked and lived. Even them playing guitar and banjo out of tune and singing slightly off key but it all coming together to produce such a pure sound is almost heartbreaking. This makes me happy and sad in realizing that, along with his death, this is also the death of a whole culture that can't be recreated.

Then a 20 ton press to make the pucks and a set of screens to separate various powder grain sizes. I mention this because moonshine and black powder are two substances which drastically changed human history. Plus he Dixon

A legend here in Tennessee. A lot of people showed up to pay their respects to him at his funeral. My grandfather did a little of this back in the day. He was a coal miner and worked in a mine that only paid you in company scrips. So you could only get stuff from their company store. So to make some actual cash on the side, he would make moonshine and other liquor. My grandma helped him do it. She was tough as nails too. She wasn't very educated, but she could take you through the forest and show you what all the plants were...what they could be used for. No formal education, but an education in knowing how survive and sustain yourself from the land. R.I.P. Pop.

Being an only child I know how to be alone. So I have many different ways of keeping myself entertained. Boy would I love to build a Still. My Italian grandfather who immigrated to America in 1915 grew red and white grapes and then processed them and put them in wooden barrels so we could have homemade dinner wine. That was the best wine I’ve ever tasted. I inherited his old wine press, a small wooden barrel with the wooden Spicket and two huge glass bottles where the fermented wine would go into once it was ready. When I was in West Virginia my cousin Clint found me some excellent moonshine. I tasted a little bit out of a Mason Canning Jarof while we hid in the chicken coop up on the mountain. Man it was so good it tasted like the finest Brandy or the finest cognac that I have had the pleasure to taste. 😎

Moonshiners unfortunately have, after years of unfair representation is pop culture, a reputation as uneducated hicks, who make cheap alcohol in a sloppy manner. But watching this you see how much of a skilled artisan he is. The way he talks about the little details, like how a certain plant indicates the right kind of water for a good distillation. This stuff is part of our country's heritage and unfortunately is beginning to disappear. Edit: forgot to say, RIP Popcorn. My paternal grandfather’s dad bootlegged during Prohibition - and my grandpa helped him as a boy, learned the craft from him - and spent a few years in Federal prison for it. Making it the way Popcorn does is sadly a dying art as fewer and fewer do it the old way. But bootlegging, whiskey and moonshine will forever be an indelible part of Southern culture and history. Marvin Popcorn Sutton was just so earnest and transparent. He wasn't about to change the way he lived his life. Money the feds should just leave the people like Popcorn alone and go after bigger fish. As he said the making of shine is only a misdemeanor now. But Popcorn was prosecuted back when it was a felony and he was a repeat offender. So in the eyes of the judicial system he was sentenced according to the law that existed at that time. He knew he had cancer was sick and going to die soon. So he decided to end his life himself rather than to die incarcerated. Now he is a folk hero and his life is celebrated at an annual festival. In many ways he was more genuine and honest than people who break the laws everyday without law enforcement pursuing them. Money they should have just required him to pay the taxes on the product. ATF will never run out of people to chase down. Lawyers will never run out of people to defend.
