Hi Tristan! I live just outside of the park and wanted to let you and your subscribers know that there is another way to access the river. Every year during the Stone Fly hatch we get in many fisher enthusiast. If you enter through the Gunnison Gorge Wilderness Access Area there is a trail called Chucker Trail, it's definitely a four wheel drive road, but at the end there is a camping/picnic area. From the parking area there's a trail that trail that takes you down to the river. The trail is narrow and has many switch back, but very easy to walk and has beautiful scenery. At the bottom it opens up to a nice grassy area (large than most areas at the bottom) , a great place to relax, picnic, fish, and more. I've even seen people with pack mules carting kayaks down the trail. President Carter used to come out here every year to fish the river at this location. The next time you visit the Black Canyon, you might want to check this out.

We were there a few years ago, it is amazing. We drove around the whole thing and stopped at every overlook even though we didn’t plan to. We had hotel reservations in Durango that night so drove down the “million dollar highway” at night. It was dark all the way from Ouray to Durango. There were mule deer EVERYWHERE. I think it was the most stressful drive we’ve ever had. But then we also stopped and saw more stars than I think I’ve ever seen in my life. It was a memorable trip for sure.

Agreed, driving at night in the mountains is always nerve-wracking because of those dang deer. Glad you (and your car) made it out alive!

I was there on the south rim the end of October. It is a beautiful canyon to see. My mobility issues didn't allow me to do some of the view points due to the distance and terrain so I really appreciate seeing it thru your eyes. Keep up the travels and letting use go with you. Thank you.

You had over 700 views in first 45 min of posting. I remember when you had about 600 subscribers! Tristan, you have two of the best channels on You Tube in my opinion. How you present locations and history, data of hikes ect... I was in western Colorado about 5 weeks ago, in Az now, the first snow was neat to fish and camp. But the smoke...I broke out of Colorado ( meet up in Tahoe in a couple weeks then) Point being. I had a schedule this fall. But spring I plan on putting your Adventure Know How maps and all to use. I just fell behind schedule checking everything out. Keep up with your Outstanding work! I Know it takes a LOT of work to post a single video and I certainly appreciate it!

Hi Tristan, Greg here. Another good episode. High shiver factor. The Black Canyon is one of the most intimidating places I have ever visited. Had some friends that did a couple of climbing routes there and was always in awe. Steep, cold, dark and immense. Your description of the chaos at the bottom being like a machine with all the moving parts was a good one. Be careful out there Hans Solo. Thanks for the vicarious adventures. Looks like the last episode's via ferrata is now on our to do list.

A little late to the party but my wife and I have been catching up on your vids and of course enjoying them eminsly. Watching this one caused my wife to openly cry. Not because of the sheer edges and heights. We visited the canyon in 1986, two years before we were married. We were both so taken with it's beauty that when our son was born in '94, we named him after the canyon. Took him there when he was four so he could see his namesake.

When you held the camera over the fence it reminded me of when I was about 5 years old my parents took us to the Grand Canyon. We stopped at an overlook area and we were at the edge by the fence and my dad picked me up and held me over the fence and dangled me in the air and all I remember was thinking that he was going to drop me and I’d end up at the bottom of the Grand Canyon dead. My mother told him to put me down and don’t do that again. Thank you for your high quality videos and the locations that you travel to and share with us! ❤

We're from the UK and slowly going insane with withdrawal symptoms as our relentless hiking in US national and state parks, and BLM lands, out West has been in suspension for two years. This is first time for 20 years plus we haven't had an annual pass. The border reopening came too late for a trip back to the West in 2021 but we are booked on flights into Phoenix in September 2022 for a month. We've been to the BC of the Gunnison several times in past years so thank you greatly for this visit to the north side which we've never visited and to see what it's like down at the bottom. Looks a bit heavy duty, but not as terrifying as Angels' Landing in Zion which we've managed (we're now in our 60s). Last time we made it to the BC we also enjoyed the drive along the East Portal Road down to the Gunnison Diversion Dam which is really the easiest way to get to the river. East Portal Road heads east off the approach road to National Park about 1 mile before the Visitor Center.

I am another of your viewers who will never be able to do this for health reasons, but I just hope you know how much this does for us who cannot be there. You open the world for us. I did get to Grand Mesa and stayed at a campground for one night about four years ago, but got in trouble with the altitude. We stopped on a road trip and I did not realize the altitude or I would have stopped for a bottle of O2 before going up. Ended up napping while sitting through the night. We dropped altitude the next day and I was fine. It is beautiful up there. Watch for the moose. Saw several on the road out.

When we hiked down there, we got lost on the way back up and couldn't find the trail, and this was before any of us had cell phones. While we were working our way back up without a trail, my sister fell and cut her knee open. Once we got to the top we flagged down a park ranger who got us back to our car, and then we had to drive to the emergency room to get her stitches. We were pretty experienced hikers with many tough and long hikes under our belt, but hikes into canyons as opposed to up mountains can be particularly difficult as the hike back up is much tougher than hiking down.

Living in Montrose for several years, about fifteen miles from Black Canyon, I visited the park many times, both north and south rim. For people like me, who cannot hike to the bottom, there is one road where one can drive to the bottom. It is an interesting and scenic drive, and there are campsites near the river. I've seen grouse, deer and bears along the way, and the park service says mountain lions also live there (but they don't show themselves). I've also been to Eagle Rock, back when it was still an active dig. Grand Mesa is impressive, especially in the Fall or in the Winter for cross-county skiing and snowmobiling. There are other great canyons nearby.

If I recall right the sign boards say that at the narrowest part you can shout back and forth to people on the opposite rim, but if you want to drive over there it's more than a 100 mile drive.

@@SUVRVing It looks like they no longer make the 100 mile claim. Maybe the roads have been shortened, or maybe somebody fact checked them. Still though, I come up with an 84 mile drive. A pretty impressive long drive for a distance that can be shouted across. Another interesting fact in 1882 the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad sent a 12 man crew into the canyon to survey a rail route. Eight of the 12 quit as soon as they realized what they were getting themselves into. The other four completed the survey and concluded that no way in hell was a railroad ever going to go through that canyon.

When a younger man, my newly married wife and I hike to the bottom and spent the night. At that time, the bottom of the canyon trail made use of chain which allowed a "soft" rappel into the bottom. The next morning, we began the long and brutal climb out....

I don't know who's the better hiker, Tristan or Wonderhussy, but I think Tristan is the best where danger is involved, that looked exactly as you stated it when you looked over the edge, it was a vertical, straight down drop. A plumbbob with a camera on the end would've given a better perspective. It's hard to find that much rope unless you go to a farm supply store and got bailing rope. Great video, you should do a collaboration with Wonderhussy, the two best hikers I've ever seen.

Woah! That's so incred. Dad's gonna love this one. He rants about all your vids, though. :) I think my fave parts were the views from the "belly of the black" and the drone footage on that badlands looking road. Nice filmwork, great fun facts. We appreciate the effort you put into all of it. Have a great and Happy Thanksgiving.

We have a bucket list goal to visit all the National Parks. We visited BlackCanyon in the winter after a snow fall and it was beautiful with the snow contrasting against the dark rock. Thanks for the view from down in the canyon. We’re not able to do that.

A long time ago some friends and I, along with a local to guide us, climbed down into the canyon to fish. Steep, treacherous and awe inspiring. The fishing wasn't that great but just being there was a total trip.
