After watching this and reading Nathantel's Nutmeg I visited the Banda islands for myself last August. They are a charming group of islands with charming people, not many tourists due to the still difficulties presented in getting there. There is little evident poverty, Most people live in nice litlle, well built homes and live simple lives drying cloves and nutmegs along the streets..There are still Dutch ruins to visit...such places reminded me of a beautiful tropical haunted house - great snorkelling too!

Dear Kate, I watched your documentary with interest. I am from Holland and have lived in Indonesia for many years. In 1976 I visited the Moluccas for the first time and I think it was in 1982 when I first set foot on the Banda Islands. The history of Banda is known in Dutch history books as the “black page in Dutch colonial history”.In 1981 I had become a Christian while living on Madura Island (East Java) and it was in 1984 when I was back in Holland and had joined Youth with a Mission, a Christian missions organization, that I felt God was speaking to me about going back to the Banda Islands to pray for reconciliation for the crimes my ancestors had committed there. I ended up going there in September 1985 together with two Moluccan Christians who both understood about the principle of reconciliation.We had the most amazing time there and I actually wrote a book about it called ‘Leviathan’, but unfortunately it only appeared in Dutch. I remember even praying for reconciliation between the Dutch and the British as well on the Neijalaka peninsula off Run island after I had found out about the relentless struggle here between the Dutch and the British which culminated in the three Anglo-Dutch naval wars in seventeenth century Europe. By the way, many years later I read the book ‘Nathaniel’s nutmeg’…It was also here in Banda that I found out that the Dutch used Japanese mercenaries to carry out some of their most gruesome actions. Later in 1992 I went to Nagasaki, Japan, where I prayed for reconciliation for the many Christians (Roman Catholics) that were killed there in the 1638 Shimabara rebellion (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shimabara_Rebellion). The Dutch played a not so flattering role in this as well and for this they were rewarded the sole trading rights with Japan for some 220 years!You would find it interesting to find out how the modern day Japanese still view Holland if for instance one visits the Huis ten Bosch tourist attraction near Nagasaki (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huis_Ten_Bosch_(theme_park)).In your documentary the British are presented as the benevolent friends of the Bandanese, which may or may not have been true in this case, but I am sure if you have studied British colonial history that this is not always the role the British played…After the Napoleonic wars many of the Dutch colonies were annexed by the British including the Dutch East Indies, but, very much against the will of the British governor, Sir Stamford Raffles (who had a Dutch mother by the way…), they were ceded back to the Dutch in 1816. Raffles stood as a symbol of British scorn against the Dutch, which was still smoldering under the surface after what had happened at Banda and Ambon (the Amboina massacre). After a futile attempt to hold on to power in Bencoolen (SW Sumatera) Raffles tried his luck on the southern tip of the Malaccan peninsula where he founded the city of Singapore, which he saw as a foothold against further Dutch hegemony in Southeast Asia. One of the Dutch colonies that was also occupied by the British when Holland was overrun by Napoleon, was the Cape Colony in South Africa. It was here that the Dutch-British relationships deteriorated further and I see this as a direct result of the deep contempt held by the British nation for almost two centuries after they were forced to leave the Spice Islands…In 1992 I married my wife Wilma who grew up in South Africa and it was here that I visited the many sites that remind one of the Anglo-Dutch war from 1899-1902. Here it was not the Dutch, but the British that fought a totally relentless war against the descendants of the Dutch settlers. The Cape had been under Dutch rule since 1652 and in the nineteenth century many Dutch had moved north in what is known as the “Great Trek” in order to flee from British dominion. Here they founded the two republics of Transvaal and the Orange Free State, but after gold and diamonds had been discovered in the Johannesburg area, under Cecil Rhodes and Governor-General Milner, the British eventually declared war on these two independent republics. The war that followed later became known as the great “Boer War”. This was the first war where trenches were used in battle (by the Boers) and concentration camps were invented by the British… When the ruthless Lord Kitchener took over control of the British armed troops, the war was eventually won by the British, but not after the whole region was destroyed by using scorched earth tactics and 23,000 women and children, descendants of the Dutch (and French Huguenots, also some Germans) had been killed in the camps. Many of the surviving soldiers suffered tremendously as they were transported on British ships to various parts of the empire (esp. Ceylon, another former Dutch colony) and were kept there as prisoner of war.After the humiliating peace treaty was signed at a place called Vereeniging, the Boers were further humiliated, as for instance the Dutch were forced to speak English and in school could be punished for speaking Dutch by wearing a paper hat with the words ‘I spoke Dutch’ on it…One can understand the grudge that many Boers (or Afrikaners as they are also called) have nurtured against the British for years and even today these feelings still have not disappeared. James Michener in his book “the Covenant” gives a clear overview of the history of South Africa and one can then understand how South Africa left the Commonwealth in 1961 and how the system of Apartheid was institutionalized.What hurts me however as a Dutch person, is that the British crown has never offered an official apology for the atrocities committed against the Dutch during the Anglo-Dutch war, a war which was started against two independent republics for the mere gain of money and power…By the way, I studied in England for one year and have worked for British firms and I have a real liking for the English people…

The British had the mentality of being the greatest empire on earth and not only did they grab colonies belonging to the dutch but sometime during the 17 th century or thereabouts briefly occupied Manila the capital city of the Philippines which was then a colony of Spain i forgot the reason for their withdrawal after occupying the city for a brief period of time. One territorial dispute that the Philippines had with Malaysia involves the island of Sabah which was given to the Sultan of Sulu in the southernmost portion of the Philippines and leased by the British East India Company from the Sultan and when the british granted Malaysia their independence they also gave Malaysia ownership of Sabah. Although the british might have had some positive effects on their colonies that were dominated by whites like Australia New Zealand and Canada in other colonies like India including Pakistan and those in Africa and the middle east they left it in shambles. How lucky for the US to have had George Washington to kick the ass of those pompous british and declare independence

if only you could see what I see when I looked at Indonesia. I've been away from Indonesia for almost 2 decades now, and living overseas really opened up my eyes of how diversity IS what makes Indonesia beautiful and rich (extremely rich), which definitely was not so much the case prior to that. Ideology is good, only when it spread peace, not hatred. I love Indonesia, i'm longing for the time i could go home and spend my last breath there, I wish Indonesians could see what a precious jewel they have right underneath their feet, not to forget the past but learn from it and move on, work on building a strong country where people treated each others like brothers, not dwelling on religious and ideology differences. When your ideology sparks division and hatred, what's the difference between you and people that you criticize? Why haven't I seen ideology that respects everyone despite of religious, racial, tribal or cultural diversity anywhere in these long bicker? how about helping each other without expecting even a thanks? helping people who you know will not be able to return the favor? making sure you do good deeds every single minute of your life cuz you never know if it touches the heart of someone who needed it the most? gosh.... what's wrong with humans? after all, life is what you make of it right? forming your own country is not gonna make things better if you still don't have peace within yourself, cuz there always be something to piss you off even when you get what you want that you thought is the ultimate solution to the problem.... we're not the only country with a bitter past, and that past should be used as a learning tool. divide and conquer... remember that? exactly what will happen again if diversity seen as obstacle of life. so appreciate indonesia and all the diversity, spread kindness because Indonesia is beautiful and really made me wanna cry when people bicker about things that will just divide Indonesia further... isnt that what your god would tell you also?

And still under Islamic rules, from government and all the Islamic party for the interest of the majority to the governments. Indo mean: "many nation or mixture between the nations". Nesia mean: "Asia". Indonesia mean: "Mixtured between many race/tribes of Asian." The Federal state of Java's legitimate along with their Capital City, namely: "Yogyakarta, but it is illegal to put all the Federal State in each of perspective country and its governments in one rule by the Javanese Islam regime in Jakarta itself. Hi Paul, in my opinion, you should learn more about the Mollucan Ancestor. Make some reflection and ask to ourselve 'why everything has changed? are we never learn and applied our culture?'. So many factors to change, from external and internal factors. You had explained the external factor, have you explain the internal factors?. Thanks by the way/

In 1513, the Portuguese were the first Europeans to land in Ambon Francisco Serrão was shipwrecked at Hitu island (northern Ambon) in 1512. The BBC wants to change the history of the world AGAIN.

+123xano After 100 years of Portuguese bases in Sunda Islands, Banda, Ternate, Ambon and around Moluccas in general, and hundreds of Portuguese voyages and some Spanish, finally the Dutch discovered the Asian, Indonesian-Malay and Moluccan in partibular secret. The phrase in the Doc. in that way, have a kind of fun, thanks BBC. But apart accuracy of the show, Portuguese were in debt to Malay, Javanese and other pilots to locate banda and the other Moluccas Islands in 1512 (Contrary to Ternante, Ambom, or Solor and Timor etc. the Portuguese presence in Banda as a permanent base didn´t last) . And the first European confrontation for the Spice Islands (but in case centered in Hamahera - Ternate and Tidore) was between Portugal and Spain (as curiosity), for some years (also around the problem of the anti-meridian of the World division), until an agreement in 1529s.

we already knew it. We know that portugese occupied maluku island, java, timor, flores, sumatra, Sulawesi and borneo. But Portugese were not the first europian that occupied Maluku. It was spanish, then portugese came along.
@Luzograal
@Luzograal 8 жыл бұрын
Wiwin Wintayati It was the Portuguese, landed in 1512, occupied Ternate more effectivly after 1520, despite already conditional setlements since 1512.. The Castilians ("Spanish") landed in 1521, and fought for them against the Portuguese until 1529 (Treaty of Zaragoza - Pacific Meridian etc), allied or trying allience with Tidore, But the Spanish only settled (Ternate) in 1600 for some time, after the arrivel of the Dutch, with the goalto reconquered it (The Dutch had conquered in 1600 from the Portuguese). Then was a "union" of crowns. Portugal was under the Spaish Kings (1580-1640). Despite the little mistake, you are for right in good part in the history. Its a natural confusion.
@wiwinwintayati5483
@wiwinwintayati5483 8 жыл бұрын
+Luzograal i dunno about that, but according to our history. we are taught that spanish were the first europians that landded to my country. Then portugese came along sailing trough maluku island looking for nutmeg after portugese conquered Malacca Strait.
@Luzograal
@Luzograal 8 жыл бұрын
Wiwin Wintayati Well, I no doubt, but something is wrong on that Chronology as you can see easely. Maybe because the voyage of Magellan is best known, of course, not far way in time, ironicaly it was a Spanish expedition full of Portuguese comanding it, until the Phillipines and Borneo, were many died, continuing to Moluccas.

That’s what he said to every island. Everyone was brought to religion of Roman Catholic. Mixed races of indigenous people and Spanish. Native Filipino culture is lost in the mixture. Some fight, some needs to fight harder. Most lose because of treaties and loads of money to buy these lands’ people for being able to produce products for the west with low cost. Now that’s unfair.

mollucans were christianized to serve the dutch. just check dutch's rule in ceylon or portuguese, they needed loyal natives who safeguarded their interests in colonial posts. islam and christianity came from middle east. makassar sultanate had a big globe when the duch tried to conquer them, so, local sultanates were progressing although slow compared to europeans. basically, those who had not embraced islam then, were left out from the world history, and still living like backwards tribes.

@oahuhawaii2141
@oahuhawaii2141 8 жыл бұрын
Of course not. They'd go bankrupt, and still won't be able to repay what they did to the Banda Islands, and other areas in Indonesia. When nutmeg and clove seeds were smuggled out of those exclusive areas and viable plants grown elsewhere outside of Dutch control, the Dutch lost their monopoly on those spices, and its economy deflated.
