For sharp fret ends, I prefer Phillip McKnight's trick of putting a strip of masking tape along the length of the neck and covering the fret ends, then sanding through the tape. The frets pop through and get sanded while keeping every bit of the wood covered.

I've got one. Not an acoustic player but wanted something cheap to sit around the house. Did exactly the sanding sponge trick, sanded the bridge saddle down about 1.5mm and adjusted the truss rod as the action was a little high. It plays perfectly and sounds as an acoustic should.

@@atteljas No argument here! I bought a Harley Benton XT-22 with the deluxe gig bag and a few accessories.... I can't remember what I paid but it was CHEAP. I am totally happy with the quality of everything I bought and it only took nine days for the shipping from Germany to the West coast and Oregon....Amazing. If I were a performing professional, (AND I AM NOT!), I would still consider Thomann first. My XT-22 is, in my opinion, as enjoyable to play as anything I may have bought elsewhere!

I own one. Currently I'm "customizing" it: filing down the side of the frets, new bone nut and saddle, Gotoh's tuners, lemon oil in the fretboard and a piece of cardboard in the lateral of the battery (It's loose and resonates with the guitar)

I don't like the title of your review, even you did so many good videos, I voted this one down. It's logical, that if you bought the cheapest Harley Benton, that it's the "worst" and the more expensive ones are better (otherwise, it makes no sense). But away from that, you'll get a very good guitar for this price (I've got one for my own). And why do you write "WORST" in capitols and stuff like "ever revied"? In my opinion, hate-videos uses the same structure: using negative superlatives in capitol letters, without a real reason. Sth. like "Affordable guitar for beginners with some flaws" would be much better. Greetings from Bielefeld Martin

Not so sure I would use a sanding sponge for taking care of fret sprout. With a bound fretboard, you have some measure of safety. On a lacquered/finished fretboard and/or unbound fretboard, you run the risk of putting scratches in the fretboard and neck finish. A rigid block (small eraser) with sandpaper is a better option. But, nothing beats a small 3 corner file or fret end file. A good fret end/dressing file only costs about $15 from StewMac. Right tool for the right job.

I do all my guitar maintenance and repair myself. I have built up tools over the years. You can get fret end dressing files from Stew-Mac but they are crazy expensive. Equivalent files can be had on Amazon for half their price and even less on Ebay. With that said, I use a triangular fretting file not just for the fret work like crowning but to dress fret ends too. A triangular fretting file is simply a fine triangle file with the corner on one or 2 edges ground smooth to produce a safe edge. They are cross-cut files, very fine and the sort of thing an engineer would use. Before getting some good files, I used needle files that I would get from hobby stores. You need to be careful when using them as they don't have a safe edge and they are in fact a bit too fine so the work is slow. With at said, the results are excellent and it's a learning experience. I see it like this. You should know how to fix, maintain and setup your instruments. There are loads of tools that help you do this. Sure, Stew-Mac has the best or at the least everything essentially needed but at a high cost. Similar stuff can be found if you shop around. Setups cost money, use that money to buy tools and learn, don't give it away to some guy to buy things you need at your expense then keep them himself. If you are dexterous enough to play guitar, you can use tools too, there's no excuse. Better to learn on a $69 guitar than something pricey too. It's all part of the journey. Learn to maintain, repair and build things. The mystique will be replaced with knowledge and you will soon be able to separate the wheat from the chaff, understand why some things cost a lot and are justified and why some things are just overpriced and a total RIP off. I hope this was useful feedback to you comment asking about fret end dressing. If you want more details or methods I've used, feel free to ask as there is a lot more I can add. I dont want to write war and peace if nobody is interested, that would just be dumb on my part. $69 bucks new, nuts. Just completely beyond my ability to understand. Good shout, good video.

My son bought the Harley Benton CG-45 NS, for a drag around guitar, he always has it with him, at first I thought it sounded tinny and cheap his answer was, at the old blues men didn't have much money, and that the "Delta Blues sound" came from them playing cheap, and wore out pawn shop guitars, and when I hear him play Delta Blues , he's right on the money.Plus when you're out playing campfire songs with a bunch of stoned and drunk folks, you really don't want to break out your Taylor, or Martin.

It's quite interesting to note that when a brand sets a very high standard for their price, going "down to reality" seems almost unforgiveable. Harley Benton has been receiving so much critical hoorays that this guitar is an even an embarrassment to the brand....it just goes to show that even budget brands could set a very high standard and compete with more popular brands.

Hey Max! I love your videos and have actually been inspired enough by them to place my first Harley Benton order. I've seen so many amazing reviews about their guitars, as well as, Thomman's customer service that I figured I couldn't lose! Well! Lose, is exactly what I did by placing that order. I ordered the Harley Benton SC-450PlusLH LD Vintage Series for my brother, as a birthday/graduation present. It showed up exactly a week from the day that I ordered it. I couldn't believe how quick it got to me from Germany. Upon inspecting the guitar, I noticed a hairline crack right where the nut meets bother the fretboard and the neck. It was so small that I couldn't tell if it was just a crack in the finish or if it was deeper than that but, the fit and finish, as well as the setup were immaculate so, I chose to ignore it and move on with my inspection. Upon plugging it in, the wiring is all wrong, and one of the pots doesn't function properly, clearly a QC issue. The neck pickup only works when the pickup selector switch is in the middle position, the volume control for the neck pickup doesn't go from silent to loud. It goes from silent to loud and then back to silent, like a swell. The bridge setting seems to be fine but, when the pickup selector is in the middle position, only the neck pickup produces sound, the bridge pickup only produces sound in the bridge setting and no sound is produced when the selector is in the neck setting. After contacting Thomman's customer support team, via email and explaining my issues with the instrument, they are refusing to address the electronics issue at all and instead, keep telling me that the damage to the neck is the shippers fault and that there is nothing they can do about it. I keep telling them that if it was just the crack in the neck, I'd keep it but, between that and the electronics, they need to replace the guitar, repair the guitar or refund me for the guitar. They are refusing to do any of the above and won't even address the electronics issue with me. Every attempt to explain that the electronics are my primary concern is met with another message, talking about the neck damage and completely avoiding addressing the electronics issue. I'm at my wit's end and don't know what to do, at this point. Any advice.would be greatly appreciated. I'm not willing to settle for them doing nothing and taking no responsibility for their shoddy work.

The tuners are not very precise but, once tuned, it stays in tune remarkably well. I can't believe you can get something like this for that price. Those sponges are pretty good. I use 1500 grit sand paper to start with, then got to 7000 grit, yeah it's over board but, my Jackson feels like heaven now, also, if you have a lacquer neck and you want to sand it, use 0000 wire wool to remove some of that lacquer, then wipe off, coconut oil is boss af for lubing the guitar neck, then once you've cleaned and lubed the neck, go over it a few times with 2000 grit sandpaper, plays like butter. Will cost you less than ten English pounds and saves you spending hundreds from a professional. Coconut oil is also a great replacement for lemon oil, really cleans up the fretboard, shines for ages, not very acidic like lemon oil, no wierd smell like some oils either. I clean my guitar 2x a year and doesn't always need it. Try the coconut oil, it's also cheaper than Dunlop lemon oil. Just saying. 👍

My HB CST 24T was perfect.. then I stored it in a place that is very very dry and I hadn't played it or touched it for a couple months. I pulled it out after a couple of months in that environment and was shocked to see that the neck pickup ring was broke and the bridge one was a bit warped and the fret ends were now sharp and the fretboard was extremely dry. So, I replaced the pickups and rings, filed the fret ends a bit, treated the fretboard w/ F-one oil, now it's back to normal. So, i'm wondering if this guitar here was just stored in a dry environment.

I already had a Harley Benton years before (an 580WR bolt-on neck SG) and I was quite satisfied with it at that time.

I use a multi sided nail polish pad for fret refreshing. No masking tape needed. Same theory great results. I enjoy the feed.

I have the $60 version of this guitar. It excludes the electronics though. Mine sounds equally amazing, and yes it did come with rough fret ends. Thanks for the tip on using a sanding sponge. Going to look for one today! Glad you've healed from your injury!

Thanks Max, another great HB then? How do they do it? I have three of them! When you sand the fret ends isn’t there a risk of sanding the binding or do you have to mask it off? And what grade of paper is on that sponge? If you have the time I’d love to hear from you!

Hi Malcolm, yes it will absolutely sand the binding, but after playing the guitar a little bit, the finish and shine on the binding edge will return.

Guitar MAX A belated thanks Max. I was a bit worried that the binding would suffer and look terrible afterwards. What grit was that on the sponge? Must be really fine I would think? Love your playing and wish I was there!

I have one of these in Black and it has a dip in the neck at the 11th fret. It was too much to justify shipping it back. I suppose I could replace the one fret.

Interesting since they used to have this 90 euro acoustic that had a plastic back as their entry level HB, that used to be their cheapest guitar. The front was veneer, back was a rounded out plastic piece, the neck I believed to be maple. Cory Mura might have reviewed this several years ago. Interesting now if they sell a 60 euro FULL wooden acoustic guitar as their entry.

if you're really cheap you can use emery boards like you use on your finger nails to smooth out the fret edges.

I don't want to take a high dollar guitar to a gig these days . I would be afraid to leave its sight for one thing .I own gibsons ,fenders ,Gretch and the benton guitars I own are great guitars .The workmanship on a LP model I have puts a gibson to shame and the picups are descent .I have one of their $200 electric thinline resonator guitars it's a great guitar .they do a beautiful job on the finishing. Now I'm thinking about one of their accoustics . They have a fancy cutaway model for $449 that looks like a guitar that a guy in Florida charges $10,000 for . Music Jobs don't pay that good unless Your playing for a some big time performer . So far now , I'll Use these and upgrade the pickups if needed or polish the frets a little .

I bought the Harley Benton delta blues mini jumbo last year. It was around 98 dollars plus 33 shipping. It a lament but I have to say I like it. The pickup isn't the best but using a sound hole pickup it sounds pretty good. Good intonation. It's kind of something I keep around to play on the couch. Dosen't have alot of bottom end but the brightness is nice. You can't really go wrong for the money and I do play it alot and I have a bunch of more expensive acoustics.

I bought a Harley Benton a few weeks ago (a CLD-60SCE NT Custom Line to be specific) and it's a great guitar. I haven't been able to put it down! The finish was flawless and it sounds fantastic. Sure the action is a bit high but nothing that can't be cured. I'm planning on adding a Tusq nut and saddle because the OE are basic plastic and I'm sure those additions will have it sounding even better.

Thanks Max, I have the same guitar. It is an exceptional guitar for not a lot of money. I was actually looking for a solution to the sharp fret ends when I saw your video. The sponge idea is brilliant. Think I will tape the neck and fret board first though. Keep making great content. Love your reviews of affordably priced guitars and gear!!

I had 1 of these in black back in 2016 untill about 5 months or so ago & it was a simular experience. Once I did some fret work, conditioned the fingerboard & put some fresh strings on it it was a good guitar. In fact sold it for a profit of $20 to someone local whom still uses it to play live gigs !! :) I now have 1 of there delta mini jumbo's which is very nice!!

When I decided to start building guitars I thought it would be good to start learning by modding an existing cheapo guitar. I bought an HB Tele from Thomann for $88. The pickups stunk but everything else was quite good. I bought three more Tele's of different types and two out of three were crap. (The black paisley Tele was quite good.)

Bought this guitar on a whim about a year ago along with my TE-52 (which I modded the Hell out of), and after a little nut and fret work, this guitar plays better than any in the 300-400 range I have played IMHO. Mine came with a bad preamp, so I reported it to Thomann, bought the same exact preamp off Ebay for $11 Shipped and stuck it in, and Thomann comped me the guitar for free minus shipping, total steal.

I bought a harley benton acoustic/electric for €140-. It looked gorgeous., but is truly the worst guitar I have ever bought and since then I'm afraid to ever try another. Your videos of the brand come close to convincing me to give them another chance, but..... I think not. Naturally if I had sent it back, Thomann would have reimbursed me. I do not blame them. Guess I expected too much. I enjoy your videos. John Paiva (an old guitar player)
