I feel like even though I mentioned it in the video, it’s important to say there are other differences between these devices and this is an EXTREMELY, oversimplified view of their similarities/differences. If you want in-depth hardware reviews, check out @nascompares as he breaks down everything and provides all the details necessary to understand each device. They’re also not “bad” devices, but we should see a refreshed lineup within the next year or so and it might make sense to wait - especially if you’re paying full price now.

@@Ultrajamz I have no idea to be honest, but I am thinking that by ~October or so, there should be some sort of announcement. The issue is, what will it be? 4 bay? 6 bay? The 16/18/22 lineup should probably be refreshed first, but the 4-bay units used to be released every 2 years (916/918/920/...923?) so we will see.

A major miss is that it is known that future Synology NAS devices will prefer to a fault ... their own hard drives, to the point where pop ups for 'incompatible hardware' are happening for recent buyers of Synology machines. Proprietary is coming, so if you can buy an older unit ... you may be better off, if you have issues with that kind of a reality.

My perspective on this is that Synology simply doesn't care as much about the home user as they used to. You can see this in the software they choose to focus on as well. Enterprise is where they make the money. Can't fault them for trying to make more. It sucks and I hope I'm wrong but I haven't seen anything to suggest I am since atleast October, 2020. Personally, I'll give it a couple years for some other company's software to catch up then relegate my 920+ to an offsite backup.

I was a NetGear ReadyNAS user for many years. I moved to Synology when NetGear stopped making them. I still has an old ReadyNAS at home, but at work we have Synology NASs throughout for backup, storage and for our virtualization storage. My biggest gripe is the STUPID restriction on hard drives. The "Synology" HDDS that they will try to sell you are more expensive than off-the-shelf HDDs and are actually nothing more than rebranded Toshiba Enterprise drives with custom Synology firmware. What really gets my goat is if you buy Synology-branded HDDs for your Synology NAS and want to upgrade and repurpose the Synology HDDs for another device, then you will sit with a bricked HDD. Synology-branded HDDs only work on Synology devices. I told them to shove their Synology HDDs and went out and purchased Toshiba Enterprise drives that are cheaper and I can use them in other non-Synology NASs or devices.

I'm done with Synology. The main reason for me was that they still have 1GBE as standard. That annoyed me. Especially since the devices are not cheap. Last year I decided to try Terramaster. And I'm thrilled. I have the T6-423 and have installed Truenas Scale. Plus 32GB RAM and 2 SSD. Very fast, stable and very quiet because almost everything is made of solid metal. And in the standard 2.5GBE. Synology's DSM is certainly easier to use, but the hardware is crap. I am very happy that Ugreen has now been added. Good for us private users. In six months I will take another look at Ugreen's software. The hardware is top.

I use the DS1621+, I loaded it with a 10gb card, 32gb ram, and 2TB SSD cache. It's been rock solid since day one. I use a combo of WD and Seagate NAS drives, and over the years had no issues. I don't like the direction Synology is going with prefered drives and the warnings for not using the prefered drives. It's easy to use and intuitive, unlike pretty much everything else. I have a Synology myself. It's solid and reliable. That's all you should care about. Try anything else, and you will end up spending much of your time and money on what could be a one-time setup-and-forget job. You are not just paying for hardware, it's also the software.

While I appreciate my Synology 720+, the reality is that it's noisy, cost a lot to get running and a lot of hardware overhead for basically a slow file server. My next NAS is likely to be all NVME and based on boards you can buy for $100-$200. I can run Proxmox on legacy hardware and get all the services DSM is offering other than the file server, and the file server I just want it be fast and silent. Synology can't really offer that at this point. Their business model is being undercut by more nimble competitors at least in the home lab space.

Synology sells as we know due to the software stack, plus the reliability aspect. Playing devil's advocate - maybe they're using procs because they know how to cool them properly and therefore ensure the product survives longer term (my opinion). Throwing SFP+ ports (as 10GbE RJ45 is not widely supported) causes more heat etc. As I said, devil's advocate (I've got a 2.5GbE USB in my 920+ which annoys me I have to go community to get a driver).

I'm still on a DS418 play and this will be my last Synology NAS. I hope guys like UGreen make it to compete and only the software experience is securing Synology sales at this point. The moment someone else has a stable, user friendly OS, Synology is in trouble. They would need to release better hardware at a lower cost to remain competitive, which I think will be a tough ask.

I own an OLD DS213J ... I wanted to replace this aged NAS. Looking at the current model for the 2-4 bays the J / Value / Plus series. And those models still use a outdated CPU /parts for that price range when other NAS makers have included a more powerful CPU, 2.5Gbps port(s). This makes me want to jump ships to other Brands. What makes me hold on to Synology is due to their simple-to-use interface. Their simple SHR Raid for simple Home users. I'm interested in the Ugrreen NAS as well, But I did not join their Kickstarter. I do not know how good are their UGOS. Hence I'm still holding back for an Upgrade.

I've found DSM (and it's really ancient Docker / Docker Compose version) very limiting for what I want to do application wise, but I've decided the better way to go is probably a mini-PC like the Minisforum MS-01 running Proxmox and using that to run a VM with Docker and your applications on it, and using the NAS for JUST storage. DSM is fine in that regard. I think my next NAS will still probably be something with TrueNAS Scale and ZFS, but whether that's DIY or something like a 45Drives HL15 if I can make room for a rack remains to be seen.

Stability Easy backups Docker Reverse proxy Synology drive with sync on demande (if you don't use it try) Synology photo is very good in my opinion I monitor my power consumption and it's around 40w with 4Hdd The CPU is around 12% during normal use (i'm a small user) but it run around 20 containers And use 4go of ram. I for my self will not take an other brand unless I have very good reason. Also the security is I think something they take seriously. Excellent presentation. Thank you. I am still rocking a couple of 11 year old 2413+ units with 4gb of memory and Atom D2700's. I just dont understand the 1gb network interfaces on new units. I honestly think that they all should come with 10gb and nothing less. What is the point of having a 2000hp twin turbo all the bald eagles for power yet only 1gb or even 2.5gb network interfaces. My 11 year old units with hard drives from the same era, will still completely saturate both 1gb network interfaces. If my 11 year unit can saturate the 1gb and the brand new units only have 1gb networking - why the hell should I upgrade? If I need a performance upgrade, I need 10gb and I need enough horsepower on the NAS to fully saturate that connection. The trouble is that many/most new units, even with 10gb, don't have the power to saturate the connection in the real world when formatted and in production. Not only do I have to check for native 10gb but I have to research it to make certain that it can actually use it. Ugh.

Not to change the subject but in the US the two cameras are out of stock everywhere. There was a third camera mentioned that is nowhere to be found. No one is talking about this issue. Are they fixing a flaw, new version coming out or supply issues? At this point supply issues would feel like a useless talking point. Any thoughts?

I see the value in DSM, especially the reliability of managing data. I care less about the CPU and more about being on supported hardware, so I can get the better features. As pure NAS I appreciate their engineering. I think the capability of the homeowner hardware is potentially lacking when the use case leans towards turning your NAS into a platform for virtualization. But you can still execute on a small scale, at least.

I have a DS920+ and I won't upgrade any time soon. Synology plays with their customers because they know they are the king of NAS but their hegemony is starting to end. Let's see if Synology open their eyes once and for all and start to really give their customers a good balance between hardware and price without: - forcing users to buy their HDD's; - stop trying to make users buy their truly expensive memory modules; - stop with the "supposed" memory limit (that we already know that can go further); - increase the number of free camera licenses; - Improve their ALL apps to Android (idk about IOS) and GoogleTV, mainly their DS Audio which is really terrible! because we already have to spend a LOT in a NAS + HDD's. Ugreen is a Chinese company and we all know what is going to happen. They will strike with all the power they have, and I'm convinced that they will focus heavily on dethroning the DSM. DSM is really good but if they think that it alone will "save" them, they are completely wrong!

I have my security cameras running on my NAS and didn't want them to not record when the 923+ went to 100% transcoding a movie and pausing every other non transcode action. I will again stay with my 920+ if the 925+ or 926+ NAS comes out with no graphics or an inferior AMD cpu with graphics compared to what I now have.

The software on Synology Nas is the critical reason I use their products. This is where other companies can't compete with Synology. Even Ugreen's products is a no go for me seeing the operating system looking abysmal. Qnaps has been a contender as an alternative, but it feels like the OS is always an afterthought to their hardware. Now that Synology is forking their product line for the consumer market with their entry devices like Beestation, it seems they're abandoning Intel all together and regulating the enterprise level nas/servers with intel hardware. I won't be surprised if they're working on an OS that can take advantage of Snapdragon's Elite chips for the prosumers since ai is the trend right now. I would love them to at least make a lowend NAS with an ARC based igpu for those who want transcoding with the latest codecs or at least offer a device that can add hardware transcoding like their Play series. Even the company Eufy who is known for consumer-based security cameras are planning to get into the NAS market to compete with Beestation and their latest base station is essentially a dumbed down Nas specifically design as a hub to have full control of their cameras.

If they would do a mere refresh for the 15xx, 16xx and 18xx models, that would mean a competitive device in this line won't be released until 2027. I don't think they can afford that. Synology is a joke. I have a 920+ with Synology drives and cache, and when I had an issue with the cache causing corruption they wouldn’t accept responsibility even when I could prove it was their hardware, especially since it was ALL Synology hardware. Also, in looking at upgrading to a more powerful 12-bay, I was able to build my own 36-bay NAS, add 16TB NVMe cache, 256GB RAM, and fill it with 100TB of drives for the same money as an empty Synology chassis.

@@RonnyNussbaum I’m currently running 2 Unraid servers with 4 caches each and 120TB per server with 256GB RAM and a small Arc A310 GPU in each for transcoding. One is my primary and the other one I bought as a backup after learning the pricing for backing up to the cloud. I also run all my media services on both for HA. I’m not really happy with the performance and stability of Unraid. I will keep Unraid as a backup because even if you lose both parity drives and then you lose another drive, you will only lose that one drive, opposed to the entire array. So I’m going to convert one of them to TrueNAS for file storage, and add another array to run iSCSI for my gaming PCs and VMs running on another 2 Proxmox servers which also run my media services and homelab projects. As part of that change and because of how TrueNAS works, I’ll be doubling the RAM to 500GB to start because I run TrueNAS as a VM in one of my Proxmox servers with 500GB RAM and it ate almost the whole thing. ZFS devours memory for caching. I adore that feature.

@@RonnyNussbaum For my NAS' I ended up getting 2 Supermicro superstorage servers with 36 bays. I bought one at first and then realized there was a 3 month ROI if I bought another one instead of backing up to the cloud, so I did that. Each server currently has a little over 100TB running Unraid, 256GB RAM, and 4 x 4TB NVMe cache drives, s small Arc A320, and 2 x 10GB NICs. I'm not really happy with the performance for Unraid, but I do like their apps, as well as the fact that even if you lose the 2 parity drives, and then you lose another, you only lose the data on that disk, rather than the entire array. So I am converting my backup server to TrueNAS, adding another 256GB RAM, adding another array for iSCSI o my Proxmox cluster can use fast iSCSI on TrueNAS as Unraid doesn't have this. TrueNAS will end up being my primary NAS backing up my media to Unraid and both backing up my configs and important files to my Synology.

With Synology you pay for the whole ease-of-use managed software with 'good-enough' hardware to use it. If you don't know linux, don't want to configure everything yourself, are not an IT nerd, don't want to keep an eye on updates/patches, don't want to configure your own security but you do want to run a big fileserver, a mediaserver, connect it to the internet with vpn, run home assistant on it, make auto-backups of all your devices, synchronize your cloud-accounts, run your own website, easy replace faulty disk, easy migrate to bigger disks or new model every 5 years and feel relatively safe by the security / managed software/updates provided by the solution (software+hardware) then I feel Synology is for me still the best choice! For 95% I have no clue how it is running/working, don't see consoles/commandlines. I am just using the thing like I use a television or a washing-machine.

I'll list a link below that sums up how I feel about devices and which I think you should use, but the first question you have to answer is if you will even USE Plex transcoding. I think it's a fairly misunderstood topic because if you are direct playing media, you'll never transcode so getting a Zimaboard would be a waste and I wouldn't rush to that conclusion if you aren't even sure. Here's my two cents: get a NAS you want and forget transcoding. If you find out you need it, get a Mini PC because it'll do the same thing as the Zimaboard while being cheaper and faster. @@jacobheadley6506 The more you use Plex (in terms of client devices), the higher the chance of transcoding, but it's a tough requirement for Synology devices right now. It's almost like you have to pick between worse hardware and better software or better hardware and worse software. In terms of the Mini PC - all it is is a device like a Zimaboard, but cheaper, and faster/better. I go over an example setup in this video, but I probably wouldn't follow it if you ONLY want transcoding: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nXmlhKV7g9-Yp80 With that said, if your goal is transcoding only, the Zimaboard is fine.
