You would have to add another ump. An ump has to be at home plate for plays at the plate. He also has to be there to call foul tips and whether or not a bunt is fair or foul. Hit batter, balks, other stuff as well. The umpiring is really bad this series for some reason. Umpiring is an art form and a skill. Remember, the AVERAGE eyesight of a MLB player is 20/13. Many have eyesight better than that. Most umps have 20/20. With the advent of super def TV many fans complain about the calls. In the past major leaguers understood that their vision was better than the umps and protected the plate. They wouldn't take a pitch an inch off the plate hoping for a call that went their way from someone that had vision not in their class. Big time sluggers have freakish eyesight and can see things that we cannot, like if a baseball traveling at 140 FPS spinning at 2400 RPM has a backspin or a side spin.
@MrFister-j6lАй бұрын
While depicted as flat on tv, the reality is the strike zone has a lot of depth to it. A ball that starts off the plate and breaks inwards towards the strike zone can miss the front part of the plate but clip the back, making it a strike. A pitch can also clip the front part of the zone, curve out of the strike zone before it hits the back half, but should still also be called a strike. realistically, an umpire behind the pitcher would be too far away from the plate to get any sense of depth. Additionally, everything just looks smaller which could just lead to more mistakes. Standing behind the plate just gives you a better view (when done well) Jomboy Media put out a video a year or 2 ago titled "Umpire calls a perfect game in the world series." One thing he pointed out was how the umpire (Pat Hoberg) moved with the catcher. If the catcher shifted to the inside part of the plate, he followed him inside and lined up his sight directly down the inside of the plate. If the catcher was shifted outside he'd slide out with him, squaring his view with the outside edge. Pat sets up directing behind the catcher's should, his body squared with home plate. He is dynamic and puts himself in the best possible position to make a call. One trend I see with a lot of bad umpires is they are stiff and take on too steep of an angle. I can't stand watching some of these umpires stand clear behind the batter, frozen in place. They set themselves up with just about the worst possible view of the plate and don't see an issue with it. Imagine trying to call balls and strikes from the opposite batters box. Obviously you wouldn't expect to do a good job because the inside and outside parts of the plate are near indistinguishable from that view. These umpires that set up way the hell inside are just doing a slightly less bad version of that. I'm not sure what umpire school looks like or what they teach you, but it baffles me that squaring yourself up with the plate isn't one of the most basic fundamentals they teach
@tima.478Ай бұрын
All the more reason they need to use the 'strike box graphic' you see on your tv...put that shyt up on the jumbo screen and let it determine the pitch, easy as pie! Ump can still make all other calls at the plate like check swings, fould balls etc. Or use what some minor league teams have already implemented. The batter has 2 times during a gam where he can protest a called strike, the pitcher has the same they just can't both be done on the same pitch. Watched the Gwinnett Stripers (Braves Triple A) where this is implemented and it was a joy to watch. It took all of 3 or 4 seconds to accomplish and it only happened 4 times during the entire game. The batter felt a strike call was questionable, he taps on his helmet, umpired raises both hands and the 'strike box graphic' is quickly flashed on the big screen and the correct call re-instated. Getting calls right is a good thing.

Do you recognize that the computer can't often manage the top and bottom of the zone in real time? Very frequently, close pitches that look just out of the zone are corrected to in the zone (or vice versa) in the post-game processing true-up that happens for every game. Further, Umpire Auditor works on a zero margin of error system. The MLB recognizes that the equipment doesn't/can't take certain factors into consideration (for example, the baseball is not just a point represented by its center) and allows a buffer zone of up to two inches that convert many pitches into correct calls after the game as well.

These bad calls ruins the integrity and fairness of the game. A single missed strike or ball can completely change a game. We can’t have the freakin World Series being impacted by an umps missed call. It’s time we remove this human error variable that a player can’t do anything about no matter how hard they train

Tip of the iceberg. Millions of observers (fans, journalists, peers, etc.) certainly have an opinion as well. Loads of questionable calls, even at the plate. Absolutely liked your visual examples. Thank you for sharing!
@michaelmilne9914Ай бұрын
Nonsense. A major league pitch moves a total of 16 to 20 inches. So a curveball may move from a straight fastball path 4 inches horizontal and 12 vertical. The pitch tracking is two dimensional. Meaning a curve ball pitch it records as two inches outside at the front of the plate may be two inches in the strike zone at the back of the plate. It may start high at the front of the plate and be in the zone by the back. It is an age old fan thing to boo umpires, but rarely will an umpire miss a call as missed obviously. Every batter wants one down the middle and if it isn't and is hard to hit it is the umpires fault not the batter. How does anyone know this, watch the pitchers not the batters, believe me every pitch the umpire actually misses will have a pitcher either smile and turn his back (good miss) or step toward the plate or stare at the plate (bad miss) Happens very few times. added edit: there are bad umpires (ie Angel whatever his name is) but these guys are pros that not only know how to call a game but can't be swayed by fan or player hype. I see nothing in this video to suggest the umpiring is anything but good.

I really don't understand why the radar (Robo-Ump) is not used to make the official call, the ump can still hang behind the plate in case of failure and for general game control. Imagine if we still got diverted from airports cuz we couldn't see the runway from 10 miles out & 3,000 ft & refused to use the technology; we overcame that by the mid 1950's.
@travis709127 күн бұрын
Agree there were bad calls made but with so much spin and break on pitches these days it's easy to see it wrong as a fan, cause it's where the ball is when it crosses the plate, not where it's caught. It only has to go over one of the four corners. We rarely get shown the overhead view of the pitch.
@RobertNevins-n5jАй бұрын
Home plate umpires have always had tendencies that are reflected in their strike zones. I can think of several who consistently called pitches that were an inch or two off the plate strikes. The key is that they were consistent in their calls. Batters adjust and the game is fair. Where things go off the rails is when an ump is totally inconsistent like some of the calls we have seen in this World Series. Players don’t complain when the calls are consistent. They tolerate an occasional missed call, but when an ump’s strike zone is all over the place tempers erupt. MLB could have done a better job of picking this crew. The robots are warming up in the umpire’s dressing room.

Framing pitches in order for them to be called strikes has got to be one of the most ridiculous calls in sports. Why can't wide receivers in football, who catch a pass with one foot inbounds and one foot on the sideline quickly step back onto the playing field in order to make it a valid catch? Because he was out of bounds. Pitches thrown outside of the strike zone should never be called a strike because of some sleight of hand "framing" bullsh!t performed by a catcher. Ridiculous.
@garrykimovichАй бұрын
Remember that the strike zone is different for every player based on height and stance, so I don't know if the box drawn on TV is always accurate. For example, Gleybar Torres at 3:36 is a definite strike and the box on TV is not correct.

The left and right sides of the displayed box are correct to very high precision, not so the top and bottom., which depends on the size and stance of the batter. In addition, every measurement contains uncertainty, which is not shown in the depiction of the ball on the strike zone. It is impossible to know for sure whether some pitches on the edges are balls or strikes, but they have to be called. Nevertheless, machines can call balls and strikes much more accurately than people can, and I suspect that most fans, players, coaches, and managers (everyone except the umpires) would prefer that they be used.
@garyleahy4537Ай бұрын
I've said this all along. The top eight (8) ranked umpires should be selected for the World Series. PERIOD!!! If they're rated and ranked, which they are, the reward should be the WORLD SERIES. These umps shouldn't have even been awarded post series games, let alone the biggest games of all. The behind the plate umpiring has been terrible in all three games so far. The strike zone is the area across home plate between the letters and the knees. Secondly, some of these catchers have made an art out of moving the glove so violently into the strike zone after it's been caught out of the zone, that this needs to be looked at and criticized as well. FIX THIS NOW!!!As an aside, this was NOT the "story of this game" but it does provide a serious question as to the proficiency of the ball and strike umpiring. There are those that would argue to the "personal" aspect of umpiring, but they need to be better or they'll be replaced with robotics. At least when it comes to ball and strike calls.
@mikeyoung9810Ай бұрын

Why is the MLB STILL not using automated strike zones? That would completely prevent bad calling like this and also any possible arguing from players or managers, as if the call is made via automated zone then it's confirmed by computer, which is far more accurate than human judgment.

I understand getting *borderline* calls wrong... the ones where you actually have to look closely at the graphic because it was close enough. But SO many calls last night were just terrible - a whole ball's width inside or outside of the zone and the call was wrong. I got to where I couldn't even react to seeing the actual pitch and the graphic, it was more like "let's see what he calls this one..." At least he was (approximately) even regarding both teams. It def cost the Dodgers a run on the Will Smith at-bat; the pitch to Torres was way out of the zone, etc. As far as the Lux play at the plate, I really couldn't tell because I couldn't actually see his hand on the plate, or the timing of when that happened vs when the tag was applied. I'm a Dodgers fan and wanted him to be safe, but I can see why they didn't overturn it - and if he'd been called safe I don't think they could've overturned it to an out call either. All of which points to the main point here - why were these umps chosen? Doesn't the NFL actually try to pick the top officials and even mix and match crews for the playoffs and SB? You always have the possibility of a bad call - it's just part of the game, and just about every high level sport is hard to officiate. But when you're literally waiting for the next bad call to happen all game, something's very wrong.
