It's not just the caliber but also the speed of the bullet as determined by the load of powder behind the shot, and rifle rounds have a lot more. Being armored against AK-47s is pretty impressive. Stopping 50 cal rifle rounds is another level of problem but 50 cal rifles are much rarer (they are super expensive).

David Lopes The M249 is only a 5.56x45mm round -- same round as the M16. It's less power per bullet than the AK-47. It's basically an M-16 meant for prolonged fire. M249's are super rare outside of the military (they are legal in America, but you need a special license and they're super expensive).

vortex1018 M249 would be easier to get than an M14, an M240 is basically the M249 that shoots the 308 (7.62). The new LWMMG will go through it, as it fires the 338 NM and puts a lot of lead downrange. If you are in an area that has one of those though you aren't driving a car.
