Everytime i see a well maintained old vehicle like yours on the road, I smile with appreciation, because what i see is love and trust between its owner and the car. That relationship is precious. I agree with what you mentioned about safety standards, which is the main reason why i dont want to daily commute in an old car. However i will prefer a used car with proven reliability than a brand new one that may have the lastest bella and whistles but lack reliability.

CR-V gang ✊. Despite the frankly awful MPG I’ve no plans to change my ‘06 Mk2. It’s comfortable, heated seats for the months of cold damp weather we have, and plenty of Japanese oddity, like the air conditioned cubby box in the dash and a boot floor that’s also a picnic table. Still running in with 110k miles on it.

My daily is a ‘97 VW Passat TDI 5 speed. Got it with about 33k miles, now just passed 70k miles. Love the car! Tan leather interior with forest green exterior, Yakima roof rack, sunroof, great sound system. 6 cd changer in the trunk, cassette. I use an FM transmitter mainly. AC and heat work. Unfortunately a deer recently hit me, but for being in an accident I got very lucky. Need a new mirror, drivers door and rear quarter panel work. But still drives n everything. Most I’ve got is 53.1 mpg, usually average 43-45 mpg in the warmer months.

I am driving a 2012 Silverado and hope to keep it going for a few more years! I live in the rust belt and I make sure that I get the truck oil undercoated every year. You have to appreciate having a manual transmission in your Rav 4 as I wished that manuals would make a large comeback in an entry level car. Although my truck is an automatic,it is rewarding and fun to be able to drive a standard!

I’m really loving your videos Owen. I drive a 1996 Jeep Cherokee XJ. I’ve had 11 cars and I’m only 21. I was caught in that vicious cycle of losing gratification and happiness, and therefore gratefulness before I got this 96’. This time I went in with a different mentality that this would be a daily driver, and that’s all. It’s not modded like every other car I’ve had, has low mileage and ease of repair on these old Jeeps is really spectacular. Like your Toyota, my Jeep is “bulletproof” but people often confuse that with “maintenance free”. It’s an old car, but it will drive without oil if you ever needed to do that lol. It gets me out to off-road campsites very far from civilization and I trust it to do so. And unlike every other car I’ve had, I haven’t regretted it immediately. It’s just an old car. That’s it. And that’s why I love it so much this time. I’ve been making videos of my own on it, and it’s sparked a new passion in the form of editing and color grading that I didn’t have before. Thanks for reading. Keep up the good work, it’s my kinda style.

I recently bought my first car, a 2000 RAV4 (4 door/2WD/5MT). I bought it from a used Prius dealer after the original owner traded it in with 340k miles in need of a lot of mechanical work, all of which the dealer completed before selling it to me. These are my thoughts on the overall platform so far: Pros: -The clutch and shifter both work perfectly fine despite the abuse they endured when I first started learning how to drive stick. -It's narrow and has a short wheelbase so it's very easy to park. Because of these plus the high sitting position, I find my spatial perception overall is a lot better driving my RAV4 compared to a Prius. -The seats hold up incredibly well. There's no visible wear on mine whatsoever. -Handles more like a car than an SUV due to the 4 wheel independent suspension. -Excellent visibility, though I do wish the side mirrors were a bit wider. -The AC is extremely strong and has a crotch vent. -The trunk is at exact knee height and doesn't have a lip, so you can comfortably sit with your legs hanging out of the back. -Commonly-replaced parts are cheap and easy to find. -It's very easy to work on, so it's cheap to fix. There's plenty of space in the engine bay and the oil filter is in a convenient spot - unlike our second gen CR-V where you had to reach through the passenger wheel well. -The cost to insure it is very cheap. Cons: -The 3s-fe is incredibly slow, having 20hp less than the competing 2000 CR-V. You have to rev it pretty high just to get going. Next oil change I'm going to throw in some Seafoam/BG EPR to get out any carbon deposits in it and hopefully make mine a little peppier. -Even in the 4-door version, the back seats are pretty narrow. Taller people have trouble getting in and out. -The glovebox and cupholders are small. You'll find yourself needing to pick up an aftermarket cupholder expander. -It's noisy. The transmission is loud, blower motor is loud, engine/exhaust are loud, and a lot of noise penetrates the cabin because it's a tin can. -It's had several issues with water leaking into the cabin, which I've heard is a weakness on first gens. Leaks from the windshield and passenger side weather stripping have been fixed but I think the worn-out door seals are leaking in a few places. -Interior parts can be hard to find. If something can't be found in Ebay or at a parts store you're stuck looking for a parts car. -The headlights are pretty dim, at least with the halogen bulbs currently installed. My hi-beams are about the same brightness as standard modern LED headlights. -Base stereo has no aux/CD player, just FM radio. Replacements HAVE to be single DIN.

I’ve got a Subaru Outback 3.0R with 355961km on it. I’ve owned it 7 1/2 years and bought it at 144,000 for $8000 AUD all in. I’ve spent about $3000 on maintenance and servicing over the years. Had some scares were I thought the head gasket was gone but no still going. The goal is to drive it until the wheels fall of it. I briefly sold Subaru’s brand new in 2009 which was the same model outback then and it’s truly a superb car. Sure the dash gets sticky and starts falling apart but whatever. There’s this thing in economics called “opportunity cost” which means if I buy this what else do I miss out on. If I had a typical car payment over the last 7 1/2 years I would have spent $63,000.

Love these videos mate, I recently did the same and bought a 3 door 2nd gen after a lifetime of owning 'cool|sporty|expensive' 'new' cars. I find a lot of joy in maintaining it by doing my own servicing - I'd love to see some videos from you doing some oil changes, power steering flushes, brake bleeds etc. One thing I personally love about the older cars (that I'm sure you will too) is the lack of convenience such as not having android auto simply because putting the effort in yourself to burn and change a CD or find the right radio station contributes to small wins that release dopamine, opposed to the latest and greatest tech although its super handy and convenient they're just easy access dopamine machines unlike these older machines that make you work for it. It helps keep us humble and grateful for the things we have.

My daily driver is a ‘97 Mazda Protege. Very basic poverty spec model but that’s less to go wrong. Cheap to run, which is great, no race car but not what I need for local running around. Not the best on a long drive for comfort and speed, though. Spent its life in a heated condo parking garage in Calgary until I was given it for free two years ago so I had it put on the train and sent here to the East Coast. Can still see the factory stickers on the underside it’s so rust free. Just had a bit on the bottom of the front fenders by the rockers where leaves and dirt had built up. Cut that out and fixed it, though. Will keep it going for as long as I can. 👍🏻

I keep a 2007 Accord as my "older" daily driver. It may not be as old or simple as a 1990's accord but it's still easy to repair. I was able to swap a blown v6 for a junkyard motor in less than 3 days, and it started the first turn key.

Also was thinking about old Rav4 safety before buying my own, but after 4 years on a motorcycle can say that safety - not an issue if you learn how to ride/drive defensively. And look at that windows! Actually you have a great advantage in visibility comparing to modern cars!

Excellent video thumbnail by the way, a nice shot showing your love for this car while still displaying the Rav 4 clearly so people like me may think “It’s that guy who made the other Rav 4 video” (That’s whats thought process was)

Looks so much better than the current RAV4 or any modern Hyundai / Kia Crossover, which are overstyled status symbols. I'm in the UK and own a Qashqai (Rogue Sport) and am seriously looking at getting an old Volvo 740 /60 saloon. The 80's American styling has always appealed and I've seen some nice, clean examples for under £4,000.

I have an ‘07 Outback, 5 speed 2.5. Love the car, but it needs some work. When it was -24°F I had to help my grandma, the hydraulic seal failed and started leaking. I need a new steering rack. Was using it just on our farm to get from one side of the property to the other, but my battery died, was the one that came with it when I bought the car in 2022. Need a friend’s friend to help me replace the rack. Loved the car a ton when it was my daily besides adding oil every couple weeks.

My current daily driver is a 2008 Ford Taurus that I purchased back in 2016 when it was eight years old and only had 4000 miles on the odometer. Today it is just coming up on 100,000 miles and still going strong! I fully expect it to last to the end of my career and take all the miles and abuse of a “work car”……….👍 Prior to that, my daily driver was a 1997 Chevy Cavalier that I purchased in 2014 for a “song” from my aunt who had purchased it new and was moving into an assisted living facility. At the time I bought it, it had 31,000 miles on the odometer and I sold it last year to some guy driving by on the street when it had a little over 180,000 miles on the clock! Last winter I purchased my son a 2013 Toyota Corolla to use as his “college car” when he headed off to Texas State University in the fall. The car had a shade over 16,000 miles on the odometer, but needed some TLC to get it looking good and running well. He just got home for winter break and it is running like a top and has been averaging between 30-32 mpg since he’s had it on the road! I took it out for a little drive the other day and was amazed at what a solid, simple little ride it is………👍 The next vehicle I purchase will likely be for myself as a “retirement gift” - I’m torn on buying something new, or looking for another older, low-mileage vehicle like the ones mentioned above that I can have fun with while at the same time having reliable and economical transportation……….🤔

I purchased a 1997 Ford Ranger brand new and drove it up to about 165k before giving it to my niece to use as her high school vehicle. She is now graduated from college and out in the work force, but the Ranger was sold to one of her neighbors and is still on the road 27 years later! Loved my first Ranger so much I bought another new one in 2009 before that classic old body style went out of production! Still have it in my collection today - spotless condition and about 37,000 miles on the odometer………👍

It puts a smile on my face to see this, and although I'm gearing to sell my 2000 Honda CRV, it treated me well and I agree with the sentiment. Similar story with my old Carolla (2004 ascent with a whoolleee lotta clear coat coming off) - dead simple, dead boring, always reliable. And cheap, which to a 17 year old just starting to drive isn't at all unwelcome. I just think that if you own an old car and treat it well, it will chug along cheerfully with not a care in the world.

I hear so many people justifying their purchase of a car that costs as much as their annual salary by saying they need a "safe" and "reliable" new car for them to drive their family around in. Meanwhile they never take into account the fact that they drive recklessly, essentially eliminating ANY added safety benefit, as they speed everywhere and text/watch TikTok while driving. Nor do they take into account the constant reliability issues and recalls that plague so many new cars that are so laced with electrical components and poorly designed engines/transmissions, that are just as likely (or more) to leave them stranded on the highway as a 96 civic. In reality it seems like ego and keeping up with the joneses, paired with poor financial decision making, that leads them to these purchases.
