Glad to get back into watching. Only a couple of weeks until we fly out west to Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, etc. and back to Georgia. Your flying is inspirational and educational. Thanks.

Todd, this 'thinking out loud' format works really well! I've always admired your risk analysis, especially since you're usually flying alone, in unforgiving terrain with hugely challenging walk-outs, thinking to myself that I would probably (stupidly) be tempted to push the envelope in some of those situations!

Oh Professor...Todd knows how to push the envelope. I once saw him eat 4 whole fried chickens, bones and all, plus an order of dry white toast. It was a real nail biter!!

@@JSBIRD69 JS, I'm glad I only got your comment as I was sitting down to eat, otherwise you'ld have had me dribbling at the very thought of it; and please don't bite your nails, calcium supplements are pretty cheap these days!

Informative, educational, not preachy, but above all very entertaining. I'd love to be flying in the terrain you have access to. Thanks for another rippa video it was a cracker! Cheers from Down Under.

I do like the back yard you fly in. Can't wait to get mine in the air and start exploring as well. Cheers from Winnipeg.

Awesome, Todd! However, my belly muscles are a little sore now from tensing up during those approaches and touchdown😂. Keep posting, brother and be safe.

Great video and cool to hear your thoughts on these tough areas to land. Yeah, this wind really needs to go. Fires today were getting a little too close as well.

Your thinking out loud format is fantastic. What every pilot wants to know. Is this what I should be concerned about at this moment in time. Great stuff. Wondering if you ever compare hp of your plane with 186 hp club rafters at like 8500 going into a strip like that.
@GravityKnightFlying
@GravityKnightFlying 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Tom! I would love to compare with a Carbon Cub (or similar) at high altitude. I kind of know one guy in the area that has one. But have not run across many here that venture off airport much. And I haven't flown with him yet. But I would really like to know how they compare for a lot of reasons. In theory, somewhere above lets say 6000ft I should have more power for the weight. But a lot of those cub variants have more wing area for the weight, so the results would be interesting. I think the altitude at which I could out climb one would show up quite a bit lower, than the altitude at which I could get off the ground shorter. Just some guesses.. would be fun to compare for sure!

Good skills and a a very good and methodical way to assess the risk and attack the problem of determining whether a spot is landable or not. I loved your approach (pun intended) to tackling the problem.

Tod, a great video would be to see what gear you have with you in your plane, safety, food, tools etc. You do a lot of solo back county flying and i'm sure you have some cool stuff in the plane should you have a problem.

This is really risky flying....one cough of the engine in some of that terrain and its potentially game over... Great to watch from the lounge chair though.

How proficient are you with the "falling leaf?" This maneuver steepens your approach & significantly slows your ground speed (kinda like a helicopter). Depending on the spool up time of your engine you can flatten your approach at the bottom, without gaining a lot of speed. The purpose, of course, is to soften the touchdown (and not turn your gear into a bowtie or crater the landing). If you've never done it the best way to get really good is start in thin air (like 10,000') and make 9,000' your "hard deck." Goal #1: consistently nail 9,000' with the lowest possible airspeed for your airframe; Goal #2: achieve the same result near sea level (best confidence boost); Goal #3: get proficient in 1,000' increments, until you're able to nail every thousand feet up to 9,000;.' Yes, it'll take time, but with the experience & knowledge you already posses in your airframe, you'll achieve the skill seemingly in no time. 👍 (By the way, I also recommend changing your door to a bubble; the "falling leaf" is crazy steep!) 😲
