Small towns: Big Problems. Is rural Montana in jeopardy?
We went to the small town of Lewistown, Montana to check out how life is in the most 'perfect' Montana town. We found out it's not so perfect.

I'm sure that's how the original inhabitants felt ( Native Americans). Unfortunately it wasn't a non-profit organization that moved them out but government and Army. I say this because it leaves me on the fence about their situation. One I feel they should be left alone because it's part of the diversity of American life and then on the other hand I see it as a delayed Karma from the past. It's a tough call. It also reminds me of the gentrification that is currently happening in the big cities.

Nick, great one. similar moves are occurring in central rural Utah. Some months ago, trying to slip an initiative in under the table, but required to have a local meeting, we surprised the out-of-state funded movement by showing up with over a hundred attendees loudly voicing opposition. Globalism is on the march everywhere, well-funded and trying to change the universe. Every time we learn of what our neighbors are facing, and realize its the same story that we have in our town, it strengthens We the People's resolve.

They are stealing and decimating everywhere. I saw that Casper, Wyoming now has a homeless (transient) and, "human waste, " problem. Destroying cities and towns, buying up land. Montana and Wyoming will soon be filled with illegals as well. A totalitarian kleptocracy. The end of America.

Gotta watch out for these cash grabs like Vanguard too. Nice to see you all showing up and fighting. Wish there was more of that in California. My community's ranch, cattle and horse life is being washed away by rich people up North. Endless wineries, overpaying for homes, turning beer joints and mom and pop restaurants into fine dining and wine tasting venues. Everything is being catered to tourists and it's pushing out the good ol' town.

They are trying to destroy Montana just like they have Colorado. Don't give up your land!
@Joe_J-MT_Boy
@Joe_J-MT_Boy Жыл бұрын
They don't 'give up their land'. They sell it for more money than they could ever take from it raising grain or cattle or sheep. When you can do that and never work another day in your life, what do you do? Hang around and tough it out so Lewistown can survive as it was? There's no logic there. In the high country, the millionaires and billionaires buy these legacy ranches and post it to local hunters. Their rich buddies fly in and enjoy some of the best hunting on the planet, cropping off trophy bull elk... and maybe THEN the landowner opens his place up to the regular citizens. If he doesn't, when the elk start tearing apart his hay stacks, FWP won't police a Special Season on that ranch to get the elk numbers down to a more manageable population level. How did they get control of that legacy ranch? Answer: the legacy rancher sold it to them. When it happens and it's far away from where you live = no big deal. If it's close and the ranch that sold is one you're familiar with, well... that's different. Right? Hypocritical... good word.

Hey Nick, great video, as always. I'm originally from Southern California and moved to Middle Tennessee farmland a couple of decades ago. I live in between two beef farms, I grow vegetables, and I can tell you farmers are natural conservationists. they don't need anybody coming in, showing them how to do that. They may be super right wings, but they do understand global warming and conservation. After all, that's the future of their business. But I can also assure folks that farmers are the hardest working people I've ever met in my life. They are out there tending to the lifestock no matter how cold it is, It could be negative twenty, and they are out there early in the morning, taking care of business. It's an open market, and I hope the cowboys understand that no matter how much money they are offered, they do not have to sell. I get offered big dollars all the time for my bit of heaven. I'm not selling. Rock on Yall

Everyone on the planet has the same wants and needs, and to one extent or another, the same problems. The way that we resolve these challenges vary greatly from person to person, community to community, race to race and religion to religion. You can't choose what race you are. For many, it's inconceivable to pick your religion. Plenty of people around the planet don't have the option to choose the community that they live in. We know what to plant and we know the native species. We don't need any help from the government. A guy wanted to buy our land and set it aside for conservation. We sent him packing. By the way, it was the government that built all the hydroelectric plants on the Snake River which made all of the Salmon go extinct on our river.

I grew up in a small(ish) town in Louisiana. As much as I still think about it to this day (considering my parents are still there) it is easy to get wrapped up in romanticizing some of these small towns across the country if you aren't from there. The reality is if you didnt have the right last name, the right clothes, the right style, or the right beliefs, you never really felt at home or comfortable. I've since moved to a somewhat larger city in another state and it comes with its fair share of problems most definitely, but at least I can live my life the way I intend without fear of repercussion for "not fitting in."

There's a 'glamping' outfit called Paws Up Resort on Hwy 200 between Ovando and Missoula. Their staff can no longer afford to live within a reasonable driving distance, so the resort owners' solution was to buy 2 motels in Seeley Lake and rent them to their employees. Rich folks don't like to wait on themselves. So what does that do to the town of Seeley Lake? Those employees don't spend money in that town like the tourists do, so the town takes a hit economically. What's happening in Montana is not just one thing. Our troubles are primarily due to too many people in the beautiful places. They are loving Montana to death.

As a lifelong Californian, I'd NEVER want to move to another place with the intent to change it to my way of what I think life should be! I'd move there for solitude and solitude alone. I'm sad to hear that so many are moving into places like Montana and attempting to "update" things before they learn the lay of the land and the ways of the people. Bison should not become a tourist attraction at the cost of a family farm...just because someone wants to give them free reign to graze. It's kind of like bringing back the Buffalo Bill Circus of yesteryear with the animals being used instead of the Cowboys and Indians, IMHO. Just another foreign land grab of the rich who are investing in America for fun and profit. Shame on all of them.

*Non Profit Charity* Don't confuse "non profit" with "non revenue". Of course they can lease out their land and earn an income. They just have to spend an equal amount so that there is no net profit. What could they spend the money on ? Maybe very fat salaries for the CEO and trustees and employees. Fat enough that even asking for an interview gets and overpaid PR lady to get you thrown out of the building.

Another great video, Nick. I love seeing how others live. I grew up on Cedar St. in San Bernardino (born in Oxnard) and my parents bought property and built a house near Wrightwood, CA in the early 70’s, where we spent some great years until I shipped off to the military. Since then, my wife and I have lived in seven different states and settled north of Bentonville, AR, two miles from the Missouri border. This is a great place to be (minus three months of humidity, yuk) but we are seeing it grow too fast for our liking. Fortunately, the folks I’ve met that are moving here from California and other states are just looking for a better life in a free state.

I lived in a slightly bigger town in Montana and, well people look out for y’a, but they’re also all up in your business, and the gossip is outta control. And seems like ppl want to let you know that they know wtf you’re doing. Like every day someone would say, « hey I saw you walking your dog by the river », or, « I saw you going to the grocery store » or whatever. I could never live in one of these places again. And in winter, unless you play in a darts league, or shoot pool, or go to bible class, there’s nothing to do. There ain’t any skiing or anything in eastern Montana…just cold and wind

Nick, I emphasize your situation...especially being a former Montana resident myself. Lewistown being no exception - they are very close-knit, don't like outsiders, and much more. I lived in Kalispell myself, and even I felt like I was being watched. My late wife was from Polson, and she felt the same way, too. Pretty scenery of the town, so yes, the social scene there in Lewistown (at times) can reach a definite negative zero. Happy travels!

I'll gladly take the "drama" of small town Montana vs the drama of any of the bigger cities such as Chicago, Baltimore, Philadelphia, San Francisco, St. Louis, Portland, Seattle, Oakland, etc. Very few riots (or "peaceful protests" as cnn would call them), lower overall violent crime, no open-air drug dens or homeless encampments along the sidewalks, and you can park your car without fearing that someone is simply going to smash your windows to get whatever you happen to have in your car with no repercussions for the criminals. Try having such peace of mind parking your car or simply walking down the street in a place like San Francisco.

Hi Nick! Always enjoy your videos. It looks a lot like my Upstate NY rural red - voting town; minus the woods and lakes. Just as here, the woke lefties ruin it. I grew up on a farm, and most of my friends and kin are farmers. Always admired Montana, and some of my kin have lived in Texas for half a century. I'm too old to move now, and over 220 years of my kin are buried here or live here. My Dad was a Barber, and I worked in a morgue for a good many years, so the proximity of these businesses and the post office is mighty convenient! The Calvert Hotel looks good to me! Except the lefties that kicked you out, the town folk are talking the same straight facts we talk about. It's sad. We don't have much homelessness here, as the winters are harsh and we either take care of our own or they occasionally crawl off after a good booze or drug bender and freeze to death or get run over somehow. One guy died of gangrene because he didn't take his boots off all winter; they just kept taking his legs a piece at a time until he was gone. I did see one homeless guy last summer in a van behind the Dollar Store. It was the damndest thing I've ever seen! He had a household air conditioner stickin' out of the driver side window! Somebody at the Dollar Store must've helped him out, but he was gone in less than a week. Our laundro - mat isn't bad, but you can't dry hides there. Keep up the good work, may your flask be always full, your ammo stocked, and may Jesus walk beside you in God's country as well as the urban pits of depravity that you must traverse!

We both laughed, but his suggestion and the fact that I've always been more interested in Montana and Wyoming than the big cities gave me the strange idea of emigrating one day and spending my retirement in the US. Loved driving through Lewistown. All you gotta do is sit down in a McDonald's and relax and listen to hear what goes on with local politics. Seems the consensus there is no to the American Prairie Reserve and no to anymore Californians. It seems that, besides the normal disagreement locals feel with the American Prairie Reserve, they also believe that the American Prairie Reserve has behaved heavy handedly. I would tend to believe that a group trying to buy out easements and property totaling three million acres IS behaving unrealistically and that, regardless of whether it is their intenet or not, displace lots of families that have been there for several generations. It certainly does not help the reserve's case that they are funded by Wall Street and Germaan billionaires. There are nerdy academics who, some years back, said the northern section of the great plains had no natural resources, specifically citing North Dakota, and that the whole of the plains should be turned into a buffalo belt. Shows what they knew when oil boomed in North Dakota in 2008, especially in the western part of the state in the Bakken field. If the ranchers were really abusing the landscape as bad as the Prairie Reserve claims, why does their mission to buy the land that the ranchers own because it is unspoiled? Can't have it both ways. I loved Lewistown, and wish I had the skillset for ranching out there. Haven't been back since 2019, but hope to one day. Drive a little North towards the breaks, especially near Judith Landing, and the Save The Cowboy signs really started to pop up.
