A character who is likeable, who relates to the viewer, who has flaws of his own, who experiences the ramifications of his choices, who changes in the end… Characterization, in my opinion, is what we’re missing.

Persistence is something i think a lot of people say they have, but they dont have it in practice. Or arent improving. Or arent throwing as much out there. Or not standing out. The major difference in those that succeed and those that dont is persistence. "Of course its hard. If it wasnt hard everyone would be doing it. The hard is what makes it great." -- Jimmy Dugan

Good writing is what's missing. Period. Interesting characters, interesting plots. Satisfying conclusions. You know the goosebumps you get from really good movies like in Gladiator when Maximus reveals his identity or when he dies and finally gets to be with his family. The ending of the Dark Knight" A silent Guardian, a watchful protector..." When the Iron Giant says, "Superman." before sacrificing himself. When the Rohirrim charge to Minas Tritith in return of the King, when William Wallace yells,"Freedom!" When the T-800 tells John, " I know now why you cry." That's what's missing! Make us feel those emotions through good writing by making us care for the characters and the story. Stop with the agendas and the messages and the politics. Just tell good stories! And we need more creatives who think like this, who want to tell genuinely good stories and not just do it for the money.

Good luck with your film, Jesse. Yes, I agree, Hollywood needs to look outside their borders and comfort zone for new writers, new stories. I'm working on something now.

A lot of Hollywood (not the individuals, but the institution) made sense to me when I was told Hollywood does not exist to make money... or to tell a great story. Hollywood exists to cultivate "status" and "fame."

What do you think is missing from today's Hollywood movies?

Uniqueness and originality. No one seems daring enough in the mainstream to make the next thing that changes the game. Even when the rare try happens, it's like we can't get a complete story.

Everything is a reboot or part of a bigger universe that I couldn't care less about. I don't want a reboot of Psycho. I just want to watch Psycho.

Nobody in Hollywood studios wants to take a risk on a new filmmaker. One must have dogged determination, creativity, unique characters & esp effective connections.👍

Not implying modern day politics into every single production... Netflix and Disney are particularly guilty of doing that. And hiring Writers, Directors and Actors, instead of narcissistic activists respectively

Independent film is the only hope for cinema. Corporate Hollywood has ruined mainstream cinema.

Take the Disney renaissance films, like Beauty and the Beast, the Little mermaid or Aladdin, or better yet, movies from the Walt Disney Era, like Snow White, Pinnochio or Cinderella. They weren't afraid to take risks and show serious things.

8:49 I BEEN SAYING THIS FOREVER! How is spending 250 million on dogshit like Red One not a risk? There was no way in hell they thought that would turn a profit....They could've dispersed that money into a bunch of smaller budget fresh ideas! I refuse to believe those Hollywood execs are that stupid to not think of this stuff....Screenwriters have to jump through a million hoops just for Red One to be the script that gets picked? Most definitely some relationship based movies getting greenlit

I would argue, at least for myself, that the reason I just rewatch things like Columbo or the Mary Tyler Moore Show, or an old Groucho film is not because of streaming. It's because the world is a complete disaster, and I just want to watch Cary Grant. Because I have seen these things before, I know exactly what to expect, what emotions it will involve from me, what mindset and thoughts it creates. New stuff, maybe they're great. Maybe they're not. But they're also unpredictable. I can check stuff on Does the Dog Die for triggers, etc., but I don't know if they will bring up stuff that will make my brain spin, or call on emotions that I am not prepared or willing to loan to the film or show at that time. As to whether or not this is the best era for films, I absolutely disagree. Everything seems like a remake, reboot, continuation, re-imagination, etc. And frankly, they're not as good. You're not going to beat the original Psycho. Sorry. You're not. If I wanted to watch Psycho, I'd watch the classic one. I don't need, or want, a remake. And right now it feels like most films either remakes/reboots/continuations/etc (officially or ripped off) or just superhero crap that I don't need or want. In short, yeah, it's a shame that a lot of us don't want to watch new stuff. But for some of us, that has more to do with our emotional and mental state at the time. And when we are willing to broach out, most of the time it's just junk food. They're not characters I care about, they're not situations that I care about, or expanded universes that I care about. They just don't mean anything to me.

These movies suck… they are all reboots, spinoffs, sequels. No originality AT ALL. It’s really sad. Kung Fu panda 4 and Minions 5….please stop.

There's the problem. A pretentious young person thinking that "they" will change the world. It's not going to happen. People are not interested in being "challenged" or lectured to. We are only interested in being entertained.

Um quite a generalisation there buddy. I think me and many others don't agree with your statement. Entertainment is great too but if it doesn't have good writing it will leave me unsatisfied
