This is one of my favourite episodes, and that’s saying something given the quality of the entire series. But I just noticed a goof: with the name Olafsdottir, the ambassador should be a woman, so Leo’s line should be “she’s very excited to meet you”.
@Yankfan83121 күн бұрын
The Icelandic ambassador’s last name wouldn’t be Olafsdottir, it would be Olafsson since he’s a male. Icelandic last names and Patronymic, meaning when a child is born, the child’s last name is their fathers first name with “-son” at the end if the child is a boy or “-dottir” at the end if the child is a girl.
@64Martin2 ай бұрын
In case anyone's curious, "Oblast" is the Russian term for "district" or "region", so when Leo asks if it's in the "Oblast region" at 2:11, he might as well be asking if it's in the "County county". Also at 1:35, Leo gives the Icelandic ambassador's name as "Vigdis Olafsdottir", and then goes on to say "he's very excited to meet you". Vigdis is apparently a woman's name, and Olafsdottir translates as "Olaf's daughter" -- an Icelandic man would have been called "Olafsson". Normally I don't pick nits like this, but this one-two combo within a single minute kinda threw me, especially coming from a show that tends to call out its own characters on details just like this.

4 and a half minutes and two mistakes: a name ending in "dottir" can't be a he, since it means "daughter", so in case of Olafsdottir, it is the daughter of Olaf's. Vigdís Ólafsdóttir, whose name they borrowed for this episode, is an actress of Icelandic origin. It is written "Vigdís Ólafsdóttir", and you are correct, it is a woman's name. And famous the world over since she was one of the first female democratically elected heads of state. Tom Clancy also named one of his characters in "Red Storm Rising" Vigdís ... Aaron Sorkin, bless him, makes a number of these sorts of errors in the course of the series (my favourite cringe is when Bartlett tells a retired English teacher that Beowulf was written in Middle English), and it used to bother me, until I realized that (a) he was writing at breakneck speed almost the whole time; (b) it was written pre- (or at least proto-) internet, when you had to really hunt down facts; and (c) William Shakespeare made similar mistakes, back in his day (probably for similar reasons, i.e. he was churning out words fast, and all he had was dial-up).

Leo identifies the Icelandic ambassador as a man but the last name he gives (ending in dottir) is that of an Icelandic woman...

These clips, of an educated president, make me want to write in Martin Sheen in November. He could do better acting than both of the choices presented.

I heard this exchange when it first aired. I still clench my jaw when Leo says the name of the ambassador, and then refers to them as "he".... A name that ends with ..."dottir" is a woman's name and one that ends with "son" is a man's name. I love the series though and try to forgive it.

The Icelandic ambassador's name sounds female* but Leo says 'he'. * The suffix "-dóttir" is used to indicate that a person is a daughter, and is added to the father's name to create a girl's surname.

I am impressed that he was able to say Vigdís Ólafsdóttir, clearly enough so I could actually understand it! Icelandic names can be so difficult for Americans.

What amazes me about this show and politics in general is that nothing has changed when it comes to policy disagreements between democrats and republicans. Immigration, abortion, gun control, taxing the rich. Nothing has changed. You can watch this show and see the same issues that each side fights for today. It makes this show remain current twenty five years later.

The West Wing is what most people think happens in the Whote House. It's too bad that no matter what party is in power it isn't. This is especially sad when you have a President that spends all night txteting, doesn't get up til noon eats junk food all day and plays golf as often as he can
@PabSungenis2 ай бұрын
Vidis Olafsdottir cannot be a "he." In the Icelandic naming convention, if they were male their second name would be "Olafsson." "Olafsdottir" literally means "Olaf's daughter." But I'm just channeling my inner Bartlet.
@Padfoot1985Ай бұрын
Spoiler alert Bartlett comes back from the symphony that he very much did not want to be at. He talked about how he was bored, but then suddenly the 3rd movement brought it all together. In the end the President was moved by the Icelandic symphony. Because those guys can really play.

I've never been to Iceland but I have Icelandic roots and I've read a lot about Iceland and its culture. There would never be a man with the last name ending in dottir, as in Olafsdottir, the name given to the representative of Iceland in this clip. He would be Olafsson.

@@simbeau I've heard that, but I'd understood it was a misconception; I'll have to look it up again in a moment. Anyway, did they mention it in the scene? I don't remember because it didn't jar like 'in the oblast region' did. Not that I don't enjoy tautological toponyms👍😄 Avon, Humber and Ouse are all 'River river' moments in Britain and there's a hill hill hill hill somewhere about with 'pen' and 'tor' in the name, can't remember the full name just now, in... Devon? I'm guessing. Have to look that one up, too. [Edit] it's Torpenhow - locals say there isn't actually a place named Torpenhow Hill though. AND it's in Cumbria not Devon - other end of the blooming country. Dammmmn 😄😄😄 Time to hire some bulldozers, IYAM.
