Jackson Galaxy addressed this in a 'My Cat From Hell' episode. Some cats develop arthritis in their spine, even at an early age. Petting them below the head is painful. They don't understand you're hurting them unintentionally so strike out and bite defensely. They still want and need affection so want petting afterwards - just not below the head. The people stopped petting their cat below her head so she no longer struck out or bit them, and they all live happily ever after. ;-)

I love the fact that each cat has its own way, yes it most likely has the survival instinct to learn to trust the one that feeds it but each cat moves on it's own space time continuum and for me that's the beauty and privilege of a cat choosing to share itself with you. I love dogs too but dogs whilst still being intelligent, they have somewhere down the line domestication intuitively learnt to be part of a human pack, rather than it's canine ancestry and of course genetic manipulation. But cats still have their often arrogant and aloof personas as their closely kept secret, that never fails to pull us in!! Great info by the way x

My cat starts purring the second I start petting him. But at some point, he gets irritated by it and starts biting. It's very gentle, no blood is drawn, it's more like a demonstration of what he could do if he was really mad. Before I figured out what the biting meant, I observed the following pattern: First, he would give me a Look. Then, he would lick my hand, arm, finger, etc - whatever was closest. Then he would do this "mock" bite, just a gesture really. If I still continued to pet him, the bites would get progressively harder. Still no injury to my hand, but it started to hurt a bit. If I was stupid enough to keep petting him after that, he would grab my hand with his teeth and claws, the way a cat does when playing, but this wasn't play. The weird part was that he continued purring the entire time. Mixed messages? Now what I do is, I stop touching him with my hands as soon as I get The Look, but I continue cuddling with him, kissing the top of his head, etc. He continues purring his head off and rubbing noses with me. He doesn't want me to pet him, but he still wants affection.

There may be “petting induced aggression” but there ARE “love bites” too. They are softer, accompanied by purring, face rubbing, etc...I’ve seen both behaviors, they are definitely different. Sometimes my cat will nibble if I’m ignoring him. There are myriads of reasons why cats bite. You have to look at the entirety of the behavior.

I've had too many cats to count over the years and I've concluded that when my cats grab me with their teeth when I'm petting them they are merely exhibiting the very behavior they show to their other "cat" family members. When I get grabbed by my cats, I've learned not to pull away quickly or I'll be scratched/injured. Usually they just let go on their own; so hang in there and trust your feline friend. Works for me.

If you do, he smacks you on the ass with his paw (though his claws are normally not extended). It's just a way of getting your attention so you pet them. It's great that he likes you.

I have a cat, Spoofy, who will try to grab at your hand if he sees it, and if he manages to catch it (usually when I let him), he'll bite it, but I think that's just his way of being playful. He loves getting petted, even after that, and it's never a hard bite. I usually don't even feel it - like to the point if I weren't seeing him do it, I might not even know he was doing it. Cats usually aren't particularly subtle about their mood, and if what you're doing bothers them, they'll usually try to get away from you if nothing else. So if the bite is followed by the cat scurrying away, that's one thing, but little Spoofy bites and then looks up at you, awaiting more petting and attention. I think it's just an obsession with hands - if he sees you across the room petting another kitty, he'll come running up to snack on your hand. Common sense will usually win you the day with cats.

I’ve always thought it was my cat trying to mimick a kiss, because I kiss him so much and maybe he doesn’t know how to do it back so he attempts with a light bite instead. First you have to make a difference between the bites. I would classify some bites as "love bites", because they're more nibbles. The cat will rub its head against you and/or will display other affectionate behavior. Others are playful bites, generally followed by grooming. Others are annoyed bites. Petting in the wrong area? Some cats don't Iike the belly or the base of the tail. Some not ever, others not over a prolonged period of time. Others likes to be petted, until the had enough. In all three cases, some cats will bite, others may use their claws. Others will do both. Some will let out an annoyed meow to emphasize their discomfort. I think it's incorrect to generalize the bite, without looking at the context.

I've had a few cats bite when scratching their bellies or chest, but they're purring away too, and they virtually never bit hard enough to draw blood. And they don't want you stop scratching/rubbing. I think they just get a bit overstimulated and bite playfully. If they get really going i had one who would grab my hand with his front paws and start kicking with his hind legs - that's scratched my arm up quite well, but again - it's "play" they would do to each other. If they *really* wanted to do damage to you trust me, you'd know, you'd be bleeding pretty well with some deep painful claw holes/bites.

Reminds me of my cat I used to have she lived until 20 and almost to her dying day she loved to play bite the hand. The game mainly involved me petting her or "taking advantage of her" by petting her paws, belly, ect.; while she would try to bat at my hand rarely using claws or biting me gently or latching onto my hand and using her hind legs to kick my arm. My kitty gives me “warning bites” if he isn’t in the mood to be petted. The warning bites either miss my hand/arm, or are so gentle that they don’t hurt. I just assume he doesn’t want to be petted and I just give him space. He is a REALLY good communicator. My cats (1 male 1 female) will give a love bite where the only place their teeth on my skin (while petting them), and gently press while they're purring loudly. I do not consider a sudden aggression when petting them the same. They only do that with people they don't know after allowing them to give a few pet strokes down their back. Even though they won't draw blood with their teeth, their back legs kicking in surprise can scratch to draw blood. I provide the warning signs to strangers (people who insist to pet the cat) and they they weren't hurt only surprised how quickly it happens.

People, it's not that complicated, they are not like dogs, do not treat them like you would treat one, cats are more similar to humans. You have to know them, learn what they like and what they don't like so there are no problems or misunderstandings. for example: each cat is different. Some don't like to be lifted, others dont like to be touched by their tails, tummy, etc. Just know your cat. if you pet your cat and suddenly it bites you, maybe it's because he/she doesnt like you to touch that area, or maybe at that moment he doesnt want to be petted, or maybe it just wants to play, maybe it wants to be alone, etc. As I say before, they're similar to humans. Cats are fantastic, take the time to get to know them and you will see how wonderful and affectionate they can be. (Pardon my english, not a native speaker)

That's when you tilt it's head back and rub it's chin, or you just hold it's head back. It will love you rubbing it's chin. If you just hold it's head back, it won't even bother trying to scratch or bite you. It knows it has lost this fight, and at that point you give it time to go do whatever it wants to do. After doing that a few times, you wont have to worry about it getting pissed anymore, because it knows you could end it's life. Animals learn by repeated results, showing it that you are the dominant one is something all animals understand.

Who looks at a cute kitty and thinks those little bites are a problem!

I was curious because I have two cats with biting habits. One can be traced to a struggle to ween her off the bottle. She was a little old, and had developed a habit of chewing the nipple rather than latching on. I had just watched a video on a whim about bottle feeding kittens, as most kittens our cats had still had mommy. I tolerated the chewing behavior on my finger, but wouldn't let it continue if it became painful. They make little chew rings for kittens, and this was a great tool to give her something to gnaw to her hearts content. She prefers my pinkie at three years old, but she's so gentle our 6 year old and our 9 year old niece both let her gnaw a bit. Now the other.... Her biting is not malicious or defensive at all, save for a few times when she's irate you aren't petting her enough, but it's nips, not a flat out attack. Still, she grabbed around my ankle on more than one occasion for her nips and I had no idea her mouth open that wide. Her nips are swift and hard, and though she's better now than when we first brought her home, those nips still hurt. They just don't break skin. Our poor late neighbor who originally homed her often had bruises and broken skin from this beast.i thought it was just thin skin from aging making it look worse, until we adopted kitty and she started warming up to us. When we had to go get her, we brought a towel and extraction gloves my husband purchased when he worked for the fire department. Cat bit right through it and left me with a nasty puncture wound. But we got her calmed and moved and she became the sweetest cat aside from this nipping habit. She loves to sleep on our bed and drag all the cat toys out and scatter them with help from the kiddo. She doesn't bite him, but she tends to avoid him as his energetic nature startles her a lot. She also adores firm pets and scritches by her tail. She does NOT like two handed petting. Makes her nervous. Takes a lot of acting. I tend to overreact to a cat bite, making a cat-like yelp if they get rough. I accidentally step on my cats tails a lot T^T but the yelp and a bit of avoidance if the behavior continues as aggressively seems to work wonders. Though only if kitty is actually friendly. If they mean to intimidate you, the act can backfire. Without those efforts, though, kitties would be much less careful with their bites. Same technique can work for clawing, but accidents will still happen there. It's the difference between your hand having a scratch and your hand resembling raw hamburger that makes kitty sensitivity training worth it! And the chewing behavior can be endearing! It's amazing how sweet they can be when you know how painful thosebites can be! Kittens train themselves to be gentle to each other in a similar way, and it not far off from how human siblings should learn this behavior.

@@ellakajfasz2569 kids aren't quite as civilized as cats and take longer to train, but maybe yelling gentle teeth can help them learn to play nicer.... I could not tell you, as me and my brothers were biters, too XD; found out real quick I could defend myself...

My small kitten tries to grab my hand and bite my finger tips when I pet her. I let her do it to see what happens. From the experiment, I came to know that she thinks I am her mother and tries to feed on my fingers like she feeds on her mom chest. She tries to suck them and occasionaly bite. Because she was very small when I started taking caring of her. Moral: Every cat’s behavior is different to the other. The cause is different. This video serves shit.

Maz2bi Your kitten was quite possibly seperated too young from its mother/parents from the sounds of it. Ideally more than 8 weeks is best for a mentally stable cat; although many owners think only 4 is enough, but for some, scummy humans 4 weeks is too long iuf they have many kittens, and are likely (semi-)criminal animal breeders without a care for animal care & humane treatment, proper feeding and cleaning the kennels, hutches and katteries etc.

Petting to play biting is the most common form of petting biting. If you think your cat is biting to hard, make a sharp noise and make your hand go limp and draw it back. This will teach your cat that hand grab play needs to meet certain standards. It is also important to remember that your cat is always holding back, so you should too. Your cat can bite through the spine of a squirrel. Your cat can bite off a rear leg of a rat. Your cat can choke bite a rabbit. A cat can rip off a human fingertip if it wants to. Cat bites send fewer people to the emergency room than dog bites do, but cat bites get just as many patients admitted to hospital. Cats have short jaws with bite forces that exceed all but the largest dogs. Play nice and withdraw to play again if you have a biter.

I have lived with (not owned) cats for over 40 years, in that time I had one who when I was wearing a dressing gown he would come up and put a front paw around my bare leg and then give a gentle bite. I was very pleased with this as I loved him very much and to me it was his version of a "love bite" and I loved it! Cats are very loving in many ways and the fun was learning what their likes and dislikes (very few) were.

My mackerel tabby, The Claw, does this. I think there are times when cats just don't feel like being touched, and a mock bite is their way of conveying that to you. I also think that sometimes a cat's rubbing against you is a message that they want something from you and if it isn't physical touching and you do just that, they'll mock bite you out of frustration that you don't "get" what they want.

Jackson Galaxy says it is overstimulation when a cat is being petted a lot and nips or nibbles. He also helped a family with a cat that had arthritis and they realized that petting hurt and that was why the cat was biting when being petted.

One of my cats gives me biscuit massages and love bits in return of pets and scratches lol 😆 it's quite funny we take turns enjoying each other she makes biscuits on me pauses give me a nip I pet/ scratche her chin back belly ect and then I pause and she restart and so on like this till she's done and pleased and goes and takes a nap.. also she will nip at my calfs or toes to indicate that she is ready for a pampering exchanging session again 🤣😁😁 cats are interesting in their way of communication... ps when she nips its very lightly but of course their little fangs are sharp as needles and it can be quit a shock when she does this and I'm completely unaware she's by my legs but blood is never draws nor is the skin ever broken 😄

Best technique is to reach your hand out towards the cat and let it guide you. That way you know wether it wants to be petted and where exactly. Works all the time.

One of my cats is a dwarf. A munchkin cat. His legs are super short. Because of this his normal actions aren’t like a regular cat. He doesn’t use his arms to bat at things like normal cats do. He uses his head and mouth a lot more instead because of his physical differences. So he head buts and nips more. Not out of aggression, but as forms of love and play. It is totally different when he is mad. That is when he will use his claws and rip into someone or something, and then he will bite hard. After he grabbed it with his claws. But his nips during love and petting and play don’t involve his claws at all. And his ears are never flat back then either. People know their cats. My other cat rarely bites. She isn’t big on being petted. If you pet her and she isn’t up for it, she kind of pulls her head away, like “what do you think you are doing!” Than relaxes again. As if you are not still there. It gets the message across with no bite or scratches. If you do it again she shakes her head like a fly is bothering her, lol, and will usually get up, stretch, and walk away. If you truly annoy her, she will grab your hand, and proceed to do the rabbit kick thing with her back paws about five or six times before running off to hide under a bed. Since she is big, about 15 lbs, it is a site to see. She is quite funny. But not much on biting or scratching. She is a quiet kitty.

A love bite vs. being annoyed vs. playing is clearly distinguishable for me with my zeekie. He just doesn’t like being touched, I think he had a hard time before he came to me at 8 weeks old. One swipe from head to tail is fine, if you go for a second or hold on too long he’s biting. I’m the only one who can pet him no problem but I can tell he doesn’t like it so I stop. He much rather I play with him, I remember thinking “I can’t wait until he gets a little older and maybe he’ll calm down some”. Wishful thinking... it never happened. He does go through different times where he’s being real sweet, then others where he’s bouncing off the walls.

I've found that watching my cat's tails when I'm petting them is a surefire way not to get bitten. My 4 mnth old kitten,Dakota, is my best case scenario...he wants petted when *he* wants it,and not a minute more. Any time I see his relaxed tail start to twitch,i stop. It's saved me *a lot* of grief.

I used to freak out but then when I let my cat bite me it the cat actually just kind of got a hold of my finger but never squeeze type it when you realize it's putting it's actually really sweet because think about it the cat could literally just spied as hard as you can rip your finger off but the cat is chosen to control itself and just give you a little bite but not enough to cause any harm to you. It's truly amazing when you think about the difference between humans and cats and how we're able to have a relationship with the cat a nice friendship it's very special

Most situations it's because the cat is getting bored and wants to playfight. However there was one odd case where the cat just mouthed my hand unexpectedly and very softly. The only comparable behavior in another animal that seems similar to it are the exploratory bites of sharks >_>

My cat often bites to tell me he wants to play! I don’t mind because he bites gently- he’s never trying to hurt me. If he bites hard, I take my hand away and turn away from him, so he learns that playtime ends when he gets too aggressive. If your cat is still purring and staying close to you while biting, it’s likely trying to play! If it bites and then dodges you or hisses, back off. It just doesn’t want to be touched. And the belly thing- my cat in particular happens to like belly rubs, but a lot of cats don’t. Sometimes they expose their bellies to say “I trust you enough to expose my most vulnerable body part” and so when you touch it they feel like you’ve betrayed that trust. It’s just really important to watch your cat’s body language, because they are actually very communicative!

We have ten cats and sometimes they like to gently chew. BIG difference between biting and nibbling. We had rescued about 25 cats over the last 15 years and three times, a pregnant momma cat brought us 5 kittenes. Not a real problem child in the batch and they play with our three dogs as well including a street rescue Rottweiler.

My adult cat Bailey hates for his stomach and paws to be touched. The kitten we have is cool as hell he's almost never aggressive he loves to climb and hide in cabinets. But Bailey is crazy 😂😂😂i love him but he will bite and hold on like a pit bull. He doesn't bite me, my boyfriend, or my oldest son but he bites my other boys and the kitten along with strangers. My master is a seventeen YO Maine Coon and she demands her petting sessions many times a day. She also does the "love bite" thing but barely bites, it's cute the way she cues me to pet her and you would have to see it to understand. She is probably the sweetest little kitty, (not so little) that I have ever served, especially when she's sleeping!
