Wasn’t his fault he wasn’t the right fit for the job, the fact that Fergie basically hired him don’t think he had much choice and was going to hardly turn it down. Different managers suit different clubs unfortunately for Moyes he went to a club that was so set in its ways it couldn’t adapt to anything else and thats still not changed all these years on. Not saying he couldn’t have done better but the clubs a toxic environment to work in it seems.

The problem with Moyes is that he had a clear case of classical conditioning. He was used to managing underdog teams and got used to being David in David vs Goliath matches (pardon the pun). It’s not easy to switch the mindset, change and think differently. He knew United obviously was a big club, but he relied on what he did in the past and what he knew for years. It’s not easy to change or embrace change.

He should not have been man United manager - it should have gone straight to mourinho. Even mourinho thought he would take over from ferguson. How moyes got that job showed how sometimes fergies influence was too much. I think he recommended him 😮 - I think United picked moyes not entirely for footballing decisions. Now United need to stick with their latest manager ten hag. He needs to stamp down his football theory like Klopp at liverpool.

Nah. When United won the champions league in 2008, it was clear in the semi final first leg away to Barca that they were sitting back. That gung-ho style was for the 90s and United struggled to replicate the '99 success in Europe until Carlos Queiroz joined them and improved their tactics.

fergie did it against bale once in his last spurs season, and against arsenal he puts extra midfielder there but yeah most players didnt get this treatment and it probably costs fergie more titles. he chose to play giggs over park in ucl final. he didnt have a plan against kaka or against luis figo and raul. moyes plays counter attack in conference league even to this day against random albanian or cyprus team. he has no shame

Ferguson would be quite offended by this, at least as Rio expressed it. He makes Ferguson sound old-fashioned and tactically inept. I'm sure Fergie thought a lot about the opposition and their star players and made adjustments to his match tactics accordingly. I think what Rio meant to say was just that Moyes did it in such a way that he made the team think that he (and by extension they) should be in some way frightened of certain players and I'm sure Fergie would have been careful to avoid that.

In Ferguson’s penultimate season, he played the most negative team going, playing for a 0-0 at the Etihad. Only to be beaten 1-0 and lost the league. Stuff like that gets glossed over

In the days before a match, Clough used to have the first team play against the reserves with the reserves set up to play in the formation and style of their next opponents. Ferguson himself has spoken of how he won the 1996 FA Cup Final by having a plan to deal with Steve McManaman (that plan being basically to have Roy Kean closely mark him and make sure he got the ball as little as possible). I actually think both Clough and Ferguson would be quite annoyed by the suggestion that they didn't think tactically about their opponents and their key players and issue instructions accordingly. What Clough and Ferguson would also say, and this might be what Rio was trying to express here, is that he wouldn't let his team go into any match scared of the opposition. They always made sure their teams believed they were better than whoever they were facing. Worth noting, of course, that Moyes's United were NOT a better team than the Liverpool and Chelsea of that season. That's not just because Moyes didn't manage them very well, it's also because the decline started some time earlier (it is without a doubt Ferguson's finest achievement that he won the league with that squad - assisted with him being incredibly lucky that van Persie had something that was unthinkable previously, an injury-free season).

Fergie himself has talked at length about how they won the 1996 FA Cup Final by assigning Roy Keane to do nothing else apart from stick to Steve McManaman like glue. That feels quite a lot like worrying about the opposition to me. Also worth noting that the United side Rio's talking about were not better than Liverpool and Chelsea at that time. Their league win the previous year is probably Ferguson's greatest achievement because it's the weakest side he ever won it with (plus the crazy luck he got in that van Persie stayed fit for the whole season for probably the only time in his career).

For example Fergie will tell Roy to stay on McManaman, but he wouldn't say when McManaman gets the ball in this position, cut this passing line. Or if McManaman makes that run, move to that position etc.

And if that’s was his point, it’s beyond weird that he would think that was an example of Fergie doing it the right way and Moyes getting things wrong. But I strongly suspect that prior to, for example, the UCL finals against Barcelona Fergie gave some pretty damned specific instructions about dealing with Messi and co. Or maybe he didn’t and that’s why the got thumped… I have to say this clip gave me some insight into what happened to United after Fergie left but it’s not the insight Rio thought he was giving. It confirmed to me that anyone taking that job at that time was doomed to fail - either they’d have tried to be Fergie mark 2, and likely end up a pale imitation, or else he’d have done things differently and met resistance from the senior players because it wasn’t what they were used to.
