A tank main job is to be the frontline and sustain as much as possible during a team fight, so the damage dealers can do their job. The mentality shouldn't be about dealing more damage. If you use Cursed Helmet, that means you are replacing it for another defensive item (Antique Cuirass* Oracle, Athena Shield, Immortality, Dominance Ice, Courage Mask, Guardian Helmet) But if your damage dealers are really inexperienced, then I guess Cursed Helmet is fine xD

Hi beto, thanks for this video. I think the tips you have given in the first 2mins of the video will be quite useful for tank mains. But I feel that there's much more to itemisation that you should have mention instead of showing a gamplay. As a 1.2k points MG tank myself, I do have some tips to add on to what you have pointed out. 1) Curse Helmet. I agree with your point. I almost never build this item unless I purely want the magic defense from this item. The AOE damage from curse helmet is quite insignificant and the stats is provide (25 magic defense) can't be compared to the best magic defense item in the game (Athena's Shield). As a general rule of thumb, don't build this unless your opponent is extremely heavy on magic and you needed more magic defense after athena's shield. (E.g. 3-4 heroes with magic dmg). 2) Athena's Shield Since I'm at the point of magic defense, I just wish to point out how strong Athena's shield is in this game. As some of you may already know, the game developer is quite bad in balancing the game mechanics. There are heroes that are exceptionally strong, and some are just pure bad. Same for items. There's only 3 magic defense items in this game. 1) Curse Helmet 2) Oracle and 3) Athena's shield. Athena's shield alone gives you 62 magic defense. To put things into perspective, Oracle gives 42 magic defense while curse helmet gives 25. This item just outright outclass the other 2 if it comes to raw magic defense. On top of that, it gives you an additional shield that blocks damage. To me, that's insane stats just for 1 item. 3) Blade Armour I don't 100% agree with your pov about this item. I feel that this is probably the most cost-efficient physical defense item to get if you need to buy magic defense item for the 2nd tank item. Blade Armour only cost 1660 gold to build and it gives you the most raw def stats (90 Phy defense) in this game. Compare it to dominance ice (70 phy def), antique cuirass (60 phy def), immortality (40 phy def), it has quite a huge stats advantage. The disadvantage is probably like you mentioned, it has quite a useless passive effect. I usually only build this item if I know I need defense item for the opponent's hyper, but also needs to buy Athena shield to tank up against their mage support or magic offlaners. To make up for the loss of physical defense as I will be buying Athena's shield as my 2nd item, I would usually build this item first. This item is kind of cheap and it will also mean you will get your athena's shield faster as a 2nd item. 4) Antique Cuirass This is my "go-to" first item for almost every game. There's a few reason for it. A) This item gives you very good raw stats that is important for early game. It gives a decent 60 physical defense that is extremely useful in this hyper meta. On top of that, it has 6 HP regen per second (Second only to guardian helmet) and an additional 900 HP. That's quite a good mix of stats and the raw HP it gives makes you tanky against the mage support as well. (In this meta, usually it's 1-3-1 with a MM/assassin hyper and a mage support) B) The component item, dreadnaught armor, is probably THE BEST 2nd-tier tank item in this game. Always build this item first before the HP belt because for the mere 730 gold, it gives u 40 physical defense. That's more than half a dominance ice! On top of this, the passive of reducing both magical and physical defense by 4% (x3) will also greatly help you in the early game where the mage supports like valir, pharsa, luoyi hurts. C) It has (in my humble opinion), the best tank item passive in this game. Like mentioned in point B, antique cuirass full upgrades provide you a 6% (x3) reduction in physical and magical damage received. This items works extremely well on heroes that relies on damaging % hp. (E.g. Karrie or claude/wanwan with DHS). I used to have lots of problems dealing with them since tank items doesn't really work on them as they deal % hp instead of raw physical damage. This was especially so when the hyper meta just came out and all the mm hypers were basically tearing tanks apart after they get double buff. I researched on all the ways to deal with Demon Hunter Sword/Karrie and this is by far the most efficient method that actually works. (Apart from this, consider dominance ice to reduce their attack speed, queens wing to reduce all damage taken (not effective since it has a 60-second cd), or the shield from Athena's shield (Not the best as well as it's magic defense item). I wish to write more but I think it will bore the hell out of you who are reading this. All in all, as a tank, it's all about items efficiency. A ml match usually takes about 11~13mins to complete. In that timeframe, you probably only get to buy 3 items to tank up against the opponent. (Mainly hyper in this meta) It's kind of tough for you if you don't choose your items properly and you will probably die a lot more than you should. Hope this comment helps you in your games. There aren't bad heroes. There are bad heroes created because higher ranks wouldn't pick them. In short, it's just a bandwagon thing. Hilda was despised before, but became meta when streamers used her? Luo yi wasn't famous when released, but became meta when used by streamers? Roger isn't even meta, but became famous when streamers funneled him? Vale isn't even meta but so many players use him now. Even nana, she was loathed before and at some point she entered the ban list for a short period of time. I'm only 800+ points so I can't really argue with a high rank like you, but for me, I pick whatever hero makes me carry the game. I don't even know why people hate Miya, her critical is good. Also clint. People go for karrie and granger because they have high damage in early game? Lol miya and clint's passive hurt 5x bigger than any of the meta adc right now

Khufra with Cursed Helmet seems viable too because of how his 2nd skill slows, traps blink skills, and deals decent amounts of magic damage to ensure that not only he can make sure the enemy eats every single damage from Cursed Helmet for 5s, but also potentially kill the target (Khufra can literally solo kill mages).

Let me add something here and for your research too beto. Cursed helmet can be used as an additional damage for some tank and fighter that deals a lot of dot. Instead build a damage item,cursed helmet can be an alternative. Since the patch buffed it a lot like giving more hp to make the holder sustain a little more damage and make the passive a little bit higher.

I think cursed helmets is important for a tank while ganking near turrets so that when you and your team turret dive cursed helmets helps your gank go smoothly as the turet will attack you and not your carry.

As user tank myself I think the most OP & most useful item for tank is Twilight Armor. It give you extra HP, mana, crit chance reduction and most importantly is the passive. You only receive damage max up to 700 when the passive active. It makes burst damage from marksman and assasin feels like tickle.

Never write the word "noob" on a picture of Tigreal, please! :( On a serious note, your advice in items for tanks is helpful and really works :) For my personal playstyle, I like to buy Athena's Shield 2nd or 3rd item whenever the enemy team has 2 or more magic damage dealers (a mage that is not playing support and a Gusion or Lancelot, for example) and also get Immortality faster. I play Tigreal or Atlas, and immortality is helpful early on when you can go in, hit an ultimate and still make use of the respawn if you die in the process (because there will be a lot of fighting in the aftermath of your ult, and you can just use skill no2 of Tig or Atlas to get out of there) By the way, I personally feel there is no need for much CD on Atlas or Tig, because their ultimate is so powerful, that if you learn how to use it effectively (pull 3-4 enemies at once) you dont need to have it avalabile more often than every 40 seconds. That's why I think you should focuse on building hp and resistance, especially for Atlas who is kinda squishy for a tank that has to go in and take a lot of damage in order to be able to place his skills.

As a (forced) tank main, I would recommend counter building as soon as possible. If they have a Claude, or Wanwan, go for dominance ice after boots If they have Esme, avoid Athena and (occasionally) immortality and go for oracle, it’s amazing especially with tanks that up an heal themselves like hylos, khufra, and mino If they have Bruno or YSS, go antique cuirass for damage reduction For grock, I often buy brute force breastplate for him as soon as possible, he benefits pretty well from what I’ve experienced Atlas is one of if not the best tank to set with, so try to get fleeting time if you can. And obviously get it for Johnson too. Cursed helmet is also pretty good on khufra cause he also has a LOT of hp Lolita, I actually think it’s better to not build dominance just cause her second skill will deal more damage if it takes more hits Mino, keep your rage up, keep it at almost max and try to keep track of your rage form ult’s cooldown since you won’t be able to see it. If you know it’s not off cooldown, you can go rage mode. You can ask about other tanks if you need to

@@titanium0002 I haven't played the game for too long. Only for a few months, and i have less then 2000 games in total, most of them with Tigreal or Atlas. Reached mythical rank last season for the first time. When I started playing Atlas I was still not paying too much attention to the build. I would just copy the build from a pro player and go with it. But then I noticed Atlas would be way too squishy for my playstyle. (Most of the builds that you get in the pro list have Endless Time as their second item, after the boots, for cd, but it doesn't work for me at all in solo rank, when my team doesnt always follow my engage so I just end up dying..) Betosky tips really did help (he made a video about how to build tanks some month ago), but then i figured that i had to adjust the order I buy the items in order to fit my own style of play. For example, as I said, I like to buy Immortality much earlier and also Athena's Shield before Antique Cuirass when facing strong magic damage dealers (Beto had it as the last item). As about Atlas, I build him same as Tigreal (boots - magical or physical def, depending on the opponents - and the main items are courage mask, immortality, antique cuirass, dominance ice/oracle, twilight armor/Athenas Shield... sometimes the regen helmet. The order will vary based on how the game is going. My affirmation that he is too squishy for a tank is not based on solid research or stats.. It's just the feel I get when I play him vs when I play Tigreal. I feel that they are both very similar heroes. As I like to say, Atlas is a more squishy Tigreal with a better ultimate and slightly better mobility. I miself I would prefer Tigreal over Atlas if his ultimate wasn't so easy to escape from by some of the heroes in the game.

Just watched this video and i will keep on saying this for tanks users. Your build will depend on who is the damage dealer of the opposite side. There are no specific build. Those are just recommendations and your opinions. You prefer your builds on what you WANT. The perfect way to build is read the items before buying them if it can sustain all the damage it may be physical or magical. Blade armor is good against heroes who depends on physical basic attacks. While Cursed helmet gives you high hp and magical defense, and you can clear waves easily in the game when your core damager is farming the jungle.

Yes but Jawhead shouldn't have attacked in the first place because Zhask is already dead. Like literally one skill from either Grock or Cyclops. Beto was right. Either the jawhead got too distracted to the potential kill or didn't know Zhask would zero out the little hp he has left.

Well this will not be to offend but to give my insight. I play tank a lot, and I must say those armor are good for some tank and in some situations. For instance Belerick skills along with those two items send out great amount of damage and help you to sustain. Yes some tank may not need those items but a good combination is where they comes in good effect.

At the end there you were able to tank most of the damage from their heavy hitters because of Athena's shield. By the looks of it, their heavy hitters were Guinevere and Zhask, who both deal huge amounts of magical damage. Athena's shield probably has the biggest magical defense of all items. Buying that item probably got you the fighting chance to turn the game.

As Tank Specialist, i totally agree that: 1. blade armor only suits for johnson if u play johnson as a pure tank role. I usually use Warrior boots, 4 Blade Armor and Immortality. 2. Agree about Cursed helmet suits for high hp heroes like Hylos and Belerick (i think). Those 2 not suits using blade armor but Dominance of ice. And also it fits for CC tanks like Khufra and hard melee fighter like Gatotkaca.

It's mindset like "I'm just a tank" that tanks get undermined and treated like dog more often than not. There are still many Mythic class players who lacks the patience for tank to set first, and expect tanks to follow ADC all the time. Cursed helmet is useful to allow a tank to clear wave, protect lanes and side push when needed.

I agree! And not just that, if tank like Khufra has Curse Helmet he can easily zone enemy ADC (e.g Marksman) and deals damage to them. That means the enemy ADC cannot simply ignore you. Additionally in ML, heroes who gets their item first has huge advantage with that Curse Helmet and Blade Armor is way more cheaper than other items. So that will be your big advantage if you have you 1st item and your enemy don't have.

When the enemy team is a balance between Magic and Physical damage the Tank has to do more thinking about how to build. But when you only need to build one type of defense then I suggest as follows: Physical: WB - Warrior Boots > DA - Dreadnaught Armor > Tier 3 Mask/DI - Dominance Ice/BFB - Brute Force Breastplate > QW - Queen's Wings/IM - Immorality > AQ - Antique Quirass The boots stack up to almost 50 def on their own, taking basics. DA on top of that will raise your raw DEF over 100 at this point if you use tank emblem. Total price is 1500 + 280 for your mask. And with just this you've got an amazing suite to take on Fighters and MM's outside of turrets. From here you adjust with the flow of the game. If you want to push advantage, Mask asap. If you need to protect a squishy; DI. BFB is great on very specific Tanks. It's crazy good if you have skill combos or need to position better in teamfights, but DI is usually a better choice because it's just a better SPP item overall. In fact, DI would bet out a mask on a good day, were it not for the need to funnel. QW is better than IM in most cases. Both are extremely useful if you're paying attention to their cooldowns and guiding your carry accordingly. Having both of them is better than just one. If you had gold you could have bought them... but you are a tank so you are broke. Then, at the end of all these considerations, you can upgrade your DA to AQ. Not a second before building your 4th item, though. But you CAN skip QW and IM in favor of this. Considerations: Twilight Armor - - Absolute HARD COUNTER to very specific heroes. Consider it. Thunder Belt - - If it didn't cost so much it could have been a staple for literally every tank BAR NONE. No kidding. The slow effect is literally insane. Blade Armor - - 90 Raw Def sounds cool until you notice that that is literally ALL that this thing has. It's not terrible... but you can do better. Guardian Helmet - - I can't think of any reason to put this on a Tank. It's not at all useless, but Tanks have no room to play with Items. Extra Considerations: Deadly Blade - - Cutting lifesteal and Shield is something that people overlook and it leads to entire teams getting wiped by heroes like Esme. Build this if your team is stupid. it's only 1200. You might think it isn't important but you are very wrong.

Actually belerick can also use cursee helm since its passive having an hp item it will increased its vitality(hp) by 15%. The more the hp he has the higher the dmg he deals so blade armor is not recommended

Ah yes Khufra its long since I last used Khufra. anyways the reason i don't use khufra is because it is a part of the ban list instead i use atlas i like atlas because of the second skill where it can stun you which is a good combo with the ult + skill 1 where it gives slow to the enemy Atlas is good with + dominance ice

As a Tigreal main I agree that using blade armor and cursed helmet are not recommended. I only use blade armor, situationally, as THE LAST ITEM when facing an enemy team full of physical attackers, given that I have antique cuirass, immortality, and domi ice. Antique cuirass is my preferred best phy def item, esp when combined with athena's shield and/or domi ice. Cursed helmet is only for tanks that deal magical damage on their skills in my opinion, esp Baxia and Hylos.

On a side note, there are also disadvantages that Cursed Helmet and Blade Armor have. They both can damage the heroes inside the tower, potentially acting as aggro for your allies diving the tower, but personally, the risk is heavier than the reward for it.

Thats actually a downside. Cursed helmet range is basic attack range and blade armour gives initiative to the enemy. You pretty much never wanna rely on the enemy to decide when the turret should be hitting you.

I have never really found a good use for blade armor but for cursed helm I almost always build it on atlas because of his 2nd and 1st skill combo deals way to much dmg, I'll build it often enough on kuf because it combos well with his 2nd and deals way to much dmg ti squishes, and it's a core item for baxia making him deal even more dmg with his ulti, cursed helm is most the time hero based and situational

Blade armor is effective against heroes who have insane physical damage but slow att speed like Leomord, Badang, etc. Dominance Ice is effective against heroes who have fast att speed like Moskov here, Claude, etc. I used build like Betosky a lot indeed because I used Khufra a lot and Khufra needs CD reduction of Dominance Ice and Oracle. But in some cases, I used Cursed Helmet and Blade Armor especially if the opponent using bulky heroes (2 Tanks, 2 Fighters, 1 Mage). Khufra need to contribute some damage alongside his CC to open a path to opponent's damage dealer which is mage (usually Cecillion or Chang'e which can do long range attack).

Dear Betosky , I just realize the most damaging equipment that a tank can have inside of defense place is cursed helmet . yeah it's very surprising . I have no idea why though . I tried the Thunder belt , blade armor , twilight armor and none of them beat the cursed helmet damage . Somehow it's just .... good for damaging . I don't really know why nobody use lightning truncheon as their main weapon when they are playing tank that uses magic damage . I mean it's absurdly powerful . It'll deal 1000 extra damage as long as you have a good amount of mana .

100% agree with you. Blade armor and cursed helmet are the two items that I almost never buy. The damage is too low and I just can't afford to buy an item that just gives you armor, no hp it's just too weak. Cursedd helmet is even weaker now and you really have to be hugging your opponent every second for it to make any difference and for that reason I only buy it on Gloo, cuz you know... you can actually atached yourself to an enemy
