This was the summer of tomatoes and peppers of all kinds here in my garden. I planted 5 kinds of tomatoes because I usually don't have the greatest luck with them. They all grew and produced like crazy! I planted sweetheart cherry- 4 plants in beds just off our back porch and one in a big pot. They are still producing! I have made 3 batches of salsa, froze a couple of gallons, dried some, not to mention all the ones we gave away! We also like just sitting on the back porch and pulling a few off the plant for a quick snack! They will be a goto next year! I also planted chiles de arbol, they all went crazy! One plant was a mystery though, it was definitely a jalapeno😂. I planted tomatillos for the first time. They also fruited like crazy. I just love filling my freezer up to use over the winter!

I hear you. Its always an experiment. My garden grows slowly since they built a 3 story condo on south side of my property. My spring tomatoes, peppers squash and cukes are still coming in. BUT, I'll plant lettuces, spinach, broccoli Raab, arugula, cilantro and carrots for fall. I got a little portable greenhouse to pop over those this winter. I'm hopeful because I had fresh lettuces through December last year just using 5 gallon home depot buckets to cover them when it froze. They didn't grow a lot in these conditions, but they survived and stayed fresh. I loved my fresh baby lettuce BLT's in December (with the formerly green tomatoes, picked the night of first frost and ripened between newspapers in boxes in basement. Tomatoes turned red, and were only as good as store bought, but the lettuce was sooo fresh. My so called "Early" cabbages planted this spring still haven't balled up. I may get nothing but loose cabbage leaves. I can maybe make a stuffed cabbage stew with them anyway. I use what I got!

This is my first year planting a garden (patio containers) and I set my expectations low. I've always thought I had a "black" thumb and just killed plants to my expectation was if I could keep plants alive and harvest anything, that was a win. So I was really pleasantly surprised at all the plants I've grown and have thrived and the food I've been able to harvest. It's been fun and I'm definitely going to continue gardening next year. I echo what the person said about a green full garden feeding us even if it doesn't fruit like we hope it will. I counted the colors of blossoms in my garden and I have more different colors than I ever have before. Other years I've had fruit but the beds didn't look full or lush. I probably have too much nitrogen that would explain all the leaves overflowing out of the beds. I am about to get a lot of cowpeas, and my okra grown from seed have finally started blossoming. I probably planted them too late. Considering the dry summer we had here in Texas, I'm thankful that things did as well as they did and it all looks beautiful right now. It soothes my soul to go out there every morning. And Luke you are right, if we don't set our expectations sky high we won't be so disappointed. Look for what went well, or better than before -- probably many things did.

Fall is hard for me. The things I grow rarely make it to fruiting, but that's okay. 90% of my fall garden is just for the beauty of it. Weeds and all. It lifts my soul. And if you happen to find a 20lb orange watermelon you don't remember planting while you're out there, that's just an extra blessing.( Yes I have enough weeds to hide a 20lb watermelon.)

Is that how garlic typically works? Plant in the fall for spring/early harvest? I live in MI and we are going to be very close to our 1st frost as well. I've been failing at garlic and horseradish - I do container gardening, but I've always planted it at the beginning of June with the rest of my crops.
@hankandgreta Жыл бұрын
@@tbassngal yes, typically planting just after the first frost but while the soil is still workable. This gives the roots a chance to begin to develop, then it sprouts up in the spring. I harvest in August. My climate is very different from Michigan, but the general idea is the same. MI Gardener has several great videos on planting garlic specifically for your area.

I planted the spacemaster 80 this year and didn’t have much success at first. This summer’s weather was really weird and they just weren’t flourishing. They really thrived in the containers and I am still getting fruit. Big fan of the Spacemaster 80!

Gardening in the South Island of New Zealand even only 9 miles difference, but a totally different soil and winter temperatures, means my spring season starts on time, for the rest of our area can start nearly a month earlier, someone on a local garden page who shifted from the Northern part of the North Island saw cucumber plants, planted them and complained when they were frosted in the last week. Where she lives they can plant the last weekend of October and my area is the 3rd week of November due to our different times for last frost.

August here in Ontario was cool and wet instead of hot and dry. The garden knew it too and all crops were sub-par. September and this far in October thr weather has been fantastic. But the crops did not recover very well. They knew fall was coming even though the temps were like summer. All plants now look sickly and the tomatoes are all rotten on the vines. What a disappointment. But I found a pair of used skylight panels on the side of the road and now I have two nice cold frames full of baby winter salad greens. You just gotta have some hope to keep gardening interesting and fun...

I prefer pole beans. Yes, they’re slower to mature but my May sown pole beans are still producing a mess of beans every other day. In the past when I planted bush beans it required double the real estate to get the same yield each week and then the plants were done after 2-3 weeks. As a lazy gardener, I like not having to plant a new crop in that space multiple times a year.

I see what you're saying but in my situation I really need for this to work, as I am getting to the point I can't afford to buy food to last the whole month. To mitigate this problem I am growing some things indoors so that everything doesn't depend on the weather. This worked great this summer when it was too hot and humid to grow lettuce outside. I had several plants growing in hydroponics and a few in soil indoors under a grow light which kept me pretty well set for lettuce in my salads during those months. I'm surprised that people were telling you bugs and disease would be worse in the Fall than in the hotter months. I have experienced less of those problems as the humidity, heat, and rain have gone down and the air is dryer. With climate change it sure looks to me like Fall Gardening is going to be the best time of year for growing outdoors. It's cool but not too cool. The only drawback I have seen so far is that although my Better Boy tomato plant has been setting more fruit they're growing slower and ripening takes much longer (possibly because the sun isn't as strong and some days are partly overcast. I have this green golf ball size tomato that has been on the vine for over a month. I see a hint of blush on it now but barely perceptible.

I'm in zone 9b in California, so my summer garden is still going strong, other than the beans and cucumbers, which were a total bust due to the ground squirrels. It's still fall/winter garden planting time, though, so I've put in 5 different varieties of shelling peas and a few varieties of snap and snow peas, fall potatoes, a few varieties each of beets and carrots (trying black carrots this year!). I'm also slowly getting all my onions and brassicas transplanted, and I have all my fall and winter greens getting ready to get scattered amongst them once they're in, including a few new to me things--strawberry spinach, a couple varieties of asian mustard and other asian greens I can't recall the names of offhand, and I don't have my seed case nearby to check. Also have my seed garlic ready to soak and plant as soon as the brassicas are all in. My red noodle beans and one variety of lima (don't remember which) are the only ones that survived the ground squirrels, and those are still giving me a great harvest, as are my cherry and paste tomatoes, and my beefsteaks and slicers should keep giving me a few tomatoes here and there until Thanksgiving or so. Once they come out I'll probably fill in with more carrots and beets and greens. I could eat garden fresh carrots and beets every day for the rest of my life and never get tired of them.

My peas are just starting with loads of flowers and even a couple of pods. My beans are being eaten but am hoping to get something out of my beats and broccoli.

I had incredible successes and spectacular failures. Seems to have been no Middle ground this year lol

Hi Luke! New to your channel, love it! We had so much rainfall this year in MI that my garden had a very short harvest. I do all container gardening but I have loads of stuff... haven't really done any fall gardening because i felt intimidated by it (and I live in MI!) but this video makes me want to try next year. Question - did you do any pruning on your zucchini? Mine take over and I was told pruning was necessary to let air flow through them, and to let the pollinators in. However, strangely I learned I have to wear safety glasses while doing this because while pruning, one of my leaves came back and scratched me pretty bad in the cornea (that happened in June) and I am still healing from it! Is it better to prune or not to prune?

I tried to have a fall garden. But so far, it's a weak showing. Last year, I had a great success with a second round of cucumbers. This year, they got totally diseased. But in fairness, we had almost a week of 90s. Then we had about 4 or 5 days of heavy rain. So I blame the weather But my biggest problem is zucchini. It used to be a big yield crop years ago. Three years sgo,

Sorry. I hit send too fast So I moved to my current location three years ago. The first year, I grew zucchini in a raised bed. It grew well and with a great yield in spite of an aphid problem. The next two years, I tried growing them vertically. I staked them and had practically no fruits. Do vining plants like zucchini, cucumbers, pumpkins and squashes, grow better when they're left to more naturally across the soil?

What variety of okra are you growing? The grasshoppers and ants love mine. We can’t grow summer beans. Too hot. Mine are blooming now. 8a

I planted walking onions for the first time, and they are up, zone 5b'ish 6 Ohio here. I was wondering if l could snip them off so late in the season to use, and if so, how far down can I snip them.? And could i mulch them a little, latter on from the snow.

The squash bugs were so out of control 🤦♀️. They destroyed my pumpkins and cucumbers. Darn pests!

My spacemaster 80 climbed the trellis just like the rest and developed at the same time. Wondering if they were actually labeled wrong. I don't think I got them from you.

They will definitely trellis and grow. They just are smaller and more compact plants. :)
