I love Gamakatsu hooks and I went to those g finesse on my 110s last year but I didn’t get the same feeling/feedback on the jerkbait when I twitched it. Also I noticed that when you put them back in your box if they have any moisture in them at all the g finesse rusted badly and very quickly. I ended up just buying more of the stock katsuage hooks from Megabass and stuck with them.

@@account2292 and they’re probably dulled a bit from rolling around in your tackle box for 20 years, but you do you man. Maintaining your equipment be it your truck, your boat, your reels, or hooks is just part of the game. Stock hooks are fine….until they’re not, then they get switched out. It’s not a big deal to me.

@@fishingthe262 I have some over 40 years old, plastic hook guards stop the dulling effect. I used to not worry about it much but now high quality trebles are a buck each ! Open your boxes in the garage when you get home so your equipment dries properly to stop rust. Keep a small on board for touch ups ….that is really all you need. Funny nobody ever mentions bomber long “A”, or several of the other old brands that still catch lots of fish. I truly believe that the action imparted by the angler, the line size, sometimes the color, and most of all fishing where the fish are at, is much more important than brand names.

Megabass hooks do not hold fish well. Terrible. Told buddy this and he is one who is hard of hearing. He lost several fish and took my advice. I told him if you buy em, trash the stock hooks. What's sad is when I tell them benefitial things like this, they usually get defiant, which makes the relationship fall apart. Only when they've come to see truth will they have shame. Nobody wants to be like me. We shouldn't have to, but somebody's got to do it. G Finesse lose fish too. Too thin, small barb, and or slick. If point is important only, then most hooks are fitting. Believe you me that I know what I'm saying. The design, the profile, the material, the barb, and the point should all be considerations.

The key is the right size hook and making sure they are sticky sharp! You do not have to take out a loan to replace hooks. The Eagle Claw 374 ( the original replacement lure hook) in a # 6 Bronze - easy to sharpen and economical is a perfect sticky hook option. Another overlooked detail is most people use to thick of a diameter split rings with most moving baits, best to use “ Fine “ split rings to get better freedom of movement with your hooks.

Man you give great advice, with that said the mega bass hooks can’t handle our lake Fork Bass, they will straighten out on your 1st 8 plus pound bass. This is using 12 pound F and a med rod. Keep up the good work man 👍🏻

Hey Randy, since you share so many tips and great info...here's something I figured out. have you tried the duo realis NANO treble hooks? they are thin and light and have the g-finesse type coating. They don't have the barbs out, but what they do have, is the tips of the hook--the points, are angled outward just barely. They are better than the megabass hooks I think because the way they are tipped outward just slightly they hook up with swiping fish, fish that don't really "eat" the jerkbait they just barely nip or swipe...it gets em. Best jerkbait hooks on the planet...they are thin and light, thin wire... you can buy them in size 5 and 6 on tackle warehouse.

If you are still looking for topics: Have you ever fly fished for trout and experienced high altitude fishing in the mountains. Or tried fly fishing for bass. I’ve noticed recently that there are changes to jighead type wet flies in the fly fishing world as well as “fly” type tackle being used in conventional bass fishing.

Randy, I have never fished a mega bass jerk bait. I have more time with a deep diving clown rattling rogue. On that lure the hook hangers are tight and can tend to catch now and again. We always, right out of the package went up a size on the front and back and down a size in the middle. This eliminated the hooks catching and would help with the slow rise. Always used that little mustad triple grip. Seems like when their coming up to hit that bait the smallmouth always has that middle hook?

Gamakatsu Superline split ring size 3 for front eyelet Decoy X-strong ( i can’t think of the exact name) size 2 for the trebles, because feel 18lbs is much too light for Extensive use (HD). These are 45 lbs if i remember correctly.
