I have used Thinkpad laptops since they where made by IBM, I’ve had various models from the e and t series. They’re exceptional, sturdy little workhorses. They’re great for a work laptop that you need to carry around and use a lot but they’re powerful enough that you can run a few games in them also. Because they’re often used by businesses there’s a generally good second hand market for them which makes them great for people trying to get as much computing power for their money in laptop form.

You mentioned it's a company laptop, your battery life suffers because most probably your laptop is joined in Intune which eats up a lot of your resources and drains your battery...I'm an IT guy at a company and we use these E14s together with the T14s and they are great laptops until we join them in Intune...

great video. As a tip I would recommend showing benchmark results compared to laptops in the same price range, you can't run benchmarks on your device but there are a lot of results available online which are definitely more trustworthy than a single measure. Keep up!

Screen does not look glossy, it looks matte. Are you sure it is glossy? It does not act as a mirror, even the strong light source is diffused and one cannot see the shape of the light source.
@team0403
@team0403 3 жыл бұрын
Poor wording, my bad! The screen itself is technically matte, but it can be very reflective depending on the circumstances. Outside, you're gonna have a hard time seeing what's on the screen because it's is not bright at all which makes it hard to see anything but the reflections.

I did not, unfortunately. But, given that even the claimed battery life is 13 hours on the AMD model as opposed to 9 on here, I believe it will be better.
@alejandrohc2757

I have that model with an AMD processor (E14 2 gen ryzen 5 4500U 256 SSD and 16GB of RAM) and at least in processing power it is excellent, although the graphics are a bit behind (R Vega 6), but still it is a lot better than any version with Intel and more if you can get versions with Ryzen 7 for example. The battery lasts a long time even using gnu/linux like me and I need an integrated microSD reader or an additional USB 3 port (type A or C), although for the price it is fine and it is nothing that a dock station or a hub solve, although a USB-c to HDMI 2 adapter is needed to use 4k monitors at 60fps with more audio channels, since the integrated one is 1.4 version. Another point to look at is the case material, since it varies a lot both in models and in availability by region, for example my laptop is made entirely of PC/ABS and there are combinations of that material with aluminum (aluminum is used in more powerful processors to improve heat dissipation).

I really wish if only engineers will review Thinkpad laptops. All reviews just talks about usb ports, keyboard clicks, sound and camera which is not what Thinkapd was made for. ONLY Engineers please.
@team0403
@team0403 3 жыл бұрын
I'm sure there are a couple of reviews of this laptop made by engineers. But saying that only engineers should review it would only make sense if only engineers bought them. But since we both know this isn't the case and there are a lot of businesses, schools, and students who buy these exact laptops (otherwise they wouldn't literally target them to that narrow slice of people), it only makes sense for other people to talk about it because different people have different priorities. I've mentioned mine in the video, which happen to be what I believe students and find more important. More takes on different aspects of a product makes for a better and more well-informed purchase decision which is the core reasons why there are reviews in the first place.

Great video , you deserve more views and subs. Imo battery life is not a big concern . For this laptop it's the keyboard which is the biggest plus point for me. I personally have the Ryzen 4650u and it's absolutely amazing . Battery last for 9-11 hours on normal use , and 4-5 hours on video editing on Premier Pro. Superb Gaming performance for my standards and battery life without a big budget!

Has anyone found a way to completely disable fan when running windows? On Linux I just made 'echo level 4 > /proc/acpi/ibm/fan' executed on each startup (with cron's @reboot config line) and I enjoy the silent operation. When I compile and CPU becomes hot, it is slown down by some 30%, but I prefer that to the noisy fan

No other laptop could give you a whole day battery, with some intensive work, other then new m1 chips in macbook. So all the bs behind this battery issues is basically nonce. Give it a try with x1 carbon and just 2 instances of Visual Studio, Db visualizer, vs code and browser with 15 tabs... It will melt the battery in 3-4 hours ez... The only laptop to this day that can give you whole day experience is unfortunately just m1 powered laptops, and that comes from a lenovo guy

Hey! Will receive the same laptop in a short(the one with the mx450). Thank you for this informative video. I am now a bit sceptical regarding battery life under windows as I am moving a lot. Do you know if basic Linus distributions such as Ubuntu would work well in that laptop? I read that some had compatibility issues after installing Linux on some new think pads.

Hi! I have never really used a different OS than Windows on my daily driver, so I can't tell you for sure. But there are people who say that on Ubuntu, their battery life actually gets slightly worse than on Windows. But apparently you can somehow tweak Ubuntu to make better use of your hardware and increase battery life. Standard linux however is supposedly better for battery life if you don't want to try tweaking your OS. But if you know how to do that, you can probably give Ubuntu a shot.

It works fine, as I said in another comment I have the model with AMD and I use fedora. Everything will be fine if you use a recent kernel, the most common issues have to do with the Realtek WiFi card (there are models that come with Intel WiFi 6) or with the FN key lock that has been resolved or require small tweaks.

If you look at the new M1 MacBooks or other ARM-based laptops, you can see that all-day battery life is not impossible. That was my point that especially Intel but also AMD need to step up their game if they want to keep competing on laptops in the long run.
@aggreyodhiambo153
@aggreyodhiambo153 3 жыл бұрын
@@team0403 They will compete in the long run for sure. Macs are for a niche market. Buying them is only justifiable if you have the money. Otherwise these windows laptops don't sacrifice performance as you'd like to say. Also, consider target audience for each product...you can't expect the level of luxury on a nissan altima to compete a 5 series. That's what you're saying here. Thanks

Can you stress the CPU ( how much Max TDP it uses) as more tdp than the processor limits may results in throttling.. you can use CPUZ to stress test. ( there is an issue in various lenovo laptops relating TDP /source : lenovo forum)

not to mention the cheap laptops they put on the market that are IMO absolutely fraudulent e-waste right from the get-go... I have seen so many "unaware" computer noobs who are being sold these cheap laptops and in good faith thinking since it is new it must do all the basic office stuff at least... one zoom call, one browser window and sharing a screen is already putting the cpu workload at max...

@team0403 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the M1 MacBooks are crazy powerful, especially for the price. But there are some use cases where going with windows is understandable or even makes more sense: - you want a gaming laptop - you're on a small budget and can't squeeze in $1000 for a MacBook - you simply don't feel like making the switch - you need programs that aren't supported on MacOS - or maybe you just don't want to risk falling into the Apple eco system. Those are the biggest reasons to still go for Windows that I can think of. That aside, as a lifetime windows user, I'm guessing my next laptop will *definitely* be a MacBook.

@@theanarchist4449 you can run Windows over Bootcamp. I don't know if you sacrifice a lot of performance while doing so, but the options has been there for years. And reports show that Linux support may be there as soon as June. I haven't used MacOS much in my life but it's definitely simpler than windows and well suited for the people who aren't as tech savy as you or me probably. I think it's just a matter of habit and you can definitely get used to it, though. Have you used MacOS for a longer period of time?
