Hollywood writers deserve $7.50 an hour for the shit they've been making

The true minimum wage is always $0. The state just uses violence to prevent anyone consensually agreeing to exchange their work for anything in between 0-7.50. Writers ought to be below the coercive threshold at $0. Not above it at $7.50. In fact with all the slop they've created and the harm they've done to our culture they should be paid negative wages

The shitty star wars shows would do better with more CGI, no one wants to see 70s stormtroopers in a 2023 production. If George got anything right with the prequels it was that the world felt alive and the battles felt epic, and large in scale.

The tale of the sentient piece of shit that wreaked havoc upon the world began on a nondescript Tuesday, under the dim, flickering light of a bathroom in a dingy apartment. The air was heavy with the stench of decay and neglect, a scent that seemed to seep into the very walls of the cramped space. Amidst this squalor, something extraordinary was brewing in the porcelain bowl of the toilet. Jeff, a laid-back slacker with unkempt hair and a perpetual five o'clock shadow, had just finished his business. Unbeknownst to him, what he left behind in the toilet was not just an ordinary piece of excrement. This was something else entirely. As Jeff flushed and turned to leave, the water swirled, and something within it stirred to life. The shit, a grotesque and amorphous blob, pulsated with a malevolent energy. It was as if all the negativity, the anger, the pain of the world had coalesced into this singular, foul entity. As the water tried to drag it down, it clung to the ceramic, refusing to be dismissed so easily. Jeff paused at the door, a strange feeling nagging at him. He turned, his eyes widening in horror as he witnessed the impossible. The shit had risen from the toilet, defying gravity and reason, growing in size as it absorbed the filth and grime around it. "Fuck me," Jeff muttered, his voice barely a whisper. The creature seemed to respond to his voice, a ripple passing through its mass as it turned towards him. The apartment shook as the creature grew, its form expanding and changing, becoming more defined. It was a monster now, a behemoth made of waste, with eyes that glowed like hot coals and a maw filled with jagged, dripping teeth. Jeff stumbled backwards, tripping over a pile of dirty laundry. The creature advanced, its movements causing the floorboards to creak and groan. It spoke, its voice a guttural, bubbling sound that filled the room. "I am the end," it declared, its words echoing off the walls. "I am the decay that consumes, the filth that corrupts. I am born of humanity's neglect, and I shall be its doom." Jeff scrambled to his feet, his mind racing. How could he stop this thing? It seemed invincible, a force of nature that defied all logic. He had to warn someone, anyone. But who would believe him? As the creature broke through the walls of the apartment, its form blotting out the sun, Jeff ran. He ran through the streets, shouting warnings to anyone who would listen. But people just stared, their expressions a mix of confusion and disbelief. The creature left a trail of destruction in its wake, buildings crumbling, cars overturned. It was an apocalypse born of the most mundane and disgusting of origins. Jeff knew he couldn't fight this thing alone. He needed help. But where could he find it? Who could possibly stand against such a monstrous embodiment of filth and decay? As the creature rampaged through the city, Jeff's desperation grew. He had to find a way, any way, to stop it. But how do you fight a piece of shit that's determined to destroy the world? The answer, when it came, was as bizarre as the situation itself. Jeff stumbled upon a group of outcasts, misfits like himself, each with their own strange talents and quirks. Together, they formed a plan, a last-ditch effort to save humanity from its own waste. The battle that ensued was epic in scale, a clash of wills and strengths that would be talked about for generations to come. Jeff and his unlikely allies fought with everything they had, their determination unwavering even in the face of overwhelming odds. In the end, it was not brute force that defeated the creature, but a deeper understanding of its nature. They realized that it was not just a physical entity, but a manifestation of humanity's worst aspects. By confronting and acknowledging their own flaws, their own contributions to the world's decay, they weakened the creature, stripping it of its power. As the creature shrank, its form dissolving into nothingness, Jeff looked around at the devastation it had caused. The world would never be the same, but perhaps, in facing this literal and metaphorical shitstorm, humanity could learn and grow. The tale of the piece of shit that nearly destroyed the world would be told and retold, a reminder of the consequences of neglect and the power of unity. And Jeff, once just a slacker with no direction, had become a hero, albeit in the most unusual of ways.

You can totally use AI to write code, it just doesn't spit out entire working programs. But you can definitely use it for different elements. The problem is that you have to be really specific about what it's supposed to do and you have to know the syntax well enough to correct typos or wrong references. Once you know some sort of code well enough to write it fluently on your own, year, it becomes useless. But for R and python you can totally use it to explain packages and different functions to you and tell you how to structure them schematically. Better than asking fat arrogant nerds on stack overflow.

@@JohnSmith-nk9xq Yeah, it's a really good tool for learning, because it can provide you with explanations for coding patterns. At the end of the day, that's great because on the one hand it means AI cannot yet replace certain designers or data scientists, but on the other it makes learning for those interested a lot easier. Kinda the best of both worlds if you think about it. No Skynet, but easy access to education.

LLM's (AI) have been around since the 60's and have made up about 30% of all web traffic comments since 2015. There is a level above the consumer that does work and it's been clandestinely applied since at least 2010. Reddit itself was one of the first live training grounds for applied models, the entire point of reddit was an MIT project to get niche tuned models for specific subjects, they disguised this intent with Markov Chains and Schwarz was murdered when he threatened to come clean (I co-developed with him). What you are seeing now is a parallel development (OpenAI etc) after they couldn't keep the newer eigen methods from being obvious to apply with hardware that is essentially perfect for it (CUDA), before this it was limited to Fugaku level compute or above (why do you think they were so obsessed with parallel computing for super computers when its applications "seemed" so limited). Basically the cat is out of the bag, they've had flame throwers for decades, we accidentally discovered fire and now are rebuilding/retracing steps that were already taken in the 90s.

@@privateassman8839 believe me or don't, but I was there. CTR through Crowdstrike/ActBlue and other NGOs bought the exclusive rights to use reddit for LLM/Markov's from Conde Nast and installed Ellen Pao as the head "scientist". (hmm, an advanced applied mathematics professor is your new CEO, so weird, man). You'll never find the info anywhere, ever, as it's been completely memory holed using a lot of the same tools, but you can catch whiffs of it. Start with Swartz personal correspondence before his death, then look at the PRISM leaks. January 2013 and June 2013 respectively. Ever wonder what story Michael Hastings was sitting on? 2,000’s How The Grinch Stole Christmas is indisputably the best film ever made. Fellowship Of The Ring is a close second, but they just don’t make movies like those anymore. Filmmakers have completely lost the ability to create atmosphere. I want fake pine trees and caves made of plastic and resin, and snowy mountain cliffs re-created on a sound stage with awesome fake snow. Instead we get actors heads attached to fully CGI’d bodies in spandex, acting against a completely CG background in a soulless plot made by the dumbest morons to ever exist.

I've used GPT4 to help me with FFMPEG commands for work. It does a good job at producing workable code. Maybe he's just bad at writing prompts. MLMs produce the next most likely combination of characters in a conversation based on the previous data it has seen in training. As design and training sets improve its ability to predict useful output will improve. Sam's opinion will be somewhat more positive with time.

Writers would have a point if modern writing were actually good, AI can't duplicate deep intriguing actually meaningful and thoughtful writing. Modern movies (even the oscarbait ones) are horribly written

Modern writing is good. MAINSTREAM writing is bad. They've lost all touch with any semblance of a decent plot, and are too obsessed with money to challenge the status quo. They'd rather crank out IronMan 13 with time traveling lesbian lungfish than risk their flatskulled audience whining that there weren't enough boner jokes or star wars references.

Sam, the fact that chatgpt wrote code for some random video editing software that didn't compile doesn't mean that it can't write other code that works. I use it all the time with python and it works very well. Not trying to bandwagon AI here but you are inaccurate in saying that all it does is output gibberish.

Can AI come up with original premises though? Can it write science fiction, drama, or romance well? Many movies start with a key concept and build out from there. I don't disagree that AI can help you expand on the concept, but can AI come up with the concept itself?

It can definitely come up with original premises. Making a large volume of mostly random shit is kind of the only thing it's good at. That's why its only legitimate use is producing infinite garbage content. That said, it could probably get good at writing some of the shittier fiction like romance and science fiction because the model for books like that is so formulaic it could be taught to a computer, and the bar is so low that the garbage ai content would be on par with the rest of it, meaning no one would notice.
@drownthepoor

@@bahshas Hollywood has made plenty of great films. Some not even original at all. Sure there's plenty of garbage, but films based on books like Fight Club or A Scanner Darkly. Fear And Loathing in Las Vegas. Plenty of smaller films too. They don't get made today because if they don't make the money in the box office there's less chance for them to recoup from VHS/DVD sales. That's why so many movies got made. They could fail in theaters, but home video sales would earn large profits in the long run.
