@@NaturallyHigh My mom always cared for my natural hair since I was born. When I was 13 I decided to start doing it on my own and help her because she and my dad were very busy with work. I started to read articles on Google and at 14 they allowed me to have a KZbin account. That's when I found all about the Natural Hair Movement and awesome KZbinrs like you, Naptural85, Green Beauty, Discovering Natural, etc. I had soo much fun learning about my type 4a/b hair and even teaching my mom a lot of things that we didn't know before. I became obsessed with doing DIYs, new techniques, hairstyles; and grew my hair to mid-back length. My parents have always been very supportive of my journey. But when I was 17 a hairstylist severly damaged my hair when she straighten it for a photo shoot. It broke and fell in clumps after I washed it. I cried a lot and had to transition for some time, cut the damage and start again with shoulder length hair and swore to never trust anyone, other than my mother, with my natural hair. I've manage to grow it again to mid-back length with protective styles like box braids and twists(with no extension), exercise, scalp massages and taking care of my health. I also learned even more about my hair and to pay more attention to the ingredients to avoid wasting money. KZbinrs like you, Curly Chemistry and Afope Atobeyi have taught me a lot about the science of natural hair, specially during quarantine. My hair is very healthy and full after learning the science and finding what works for it. I'm now doing a challenge were I'm wearing 30 twists(no extensions), for a year, to reach waist length and beyond. It's a breeze to manage my hair, specially during exams in college, and I've noticed a lot of length retention. Sorry if my comment was too long and thank you, again😊.

*_Not long at all, very informative. I liked that u included exercise as a part of your hair growth journey bc this doesn't get talked about often enough. I don't think people realize that as part of a moisturizing regimen, sweat from exercise "is" moisture and that exercise also circulates nutrients to the scalp via blood flow_*@@Sunshine_Hime

I’ve been using rhassoul clay for the last few months and it’s a game changer. Retaining length, softer hair, less tangles, no buildup or residue, retaining length, and using far less product than before. Love it so far, not sure if I’ll go back to shampoo!

I am officially six years into my growth journey. Currently maintaining my hair at hip length. I don’t use combs or brushes at all except on my straightened hair. I also take that opportunity to get a haircut. I trim the interior of my hair piece by piece as I flat iron it. Afterwards, I cut bangs, then my daughter cuts and evens my hair out straight across in the back. 💇🏽‍♀️ ❤️

@@originalMissV: I hope you’re having more success since leaving this comment and that you haven’t given up on your hair journey. I didn’t big chop, by the way. I had pretty severe heat damage (from going to the salon) but I cut it off very gradually. My hair was breaking off badly at the beginning of my journey. But when I stopped using detangling tools (combs, etc.) the noticeable breakage stopped. Everyone’s hair suffers some breakage no matter what you do or don’t do. The trick is minimizing it as much as possible. 🥰

3::31 I don't believe that bc type 4 hair is the strongest hair. The curls can only break if you rake through them with a fine tooth comb. The slinky shape doesn't qualify a hair type as being unbalanced, no more so than a slinky is unbalanced. In has the same balanced energy from top to bottom. That's why it can go down stairs by itself. Our hair is the same where undamaged hair is resilient balanced and strong. The curves store strength and kinetic energy too.
@user-um7tw6kx4r6
@user-um7tw6kx4r6 Жыл бұрын
Just because hair is 4c doesn't make it strong. What makes hair strong is the thickness of each strand. Coarse hair is stronger than fine hair, and that's all there is to it regardless of curl pattern.

@glam glam Same, here! This is what I'm doing and it's helping: treat your ends as though they are very high porosity. That means more hydrolyzed protein treatments, just on your ends. I "paint" my ends, 1x a month, with gelatin. Easy peasy! 2nd tip: seal your ends with heavy products. I use kokum or Shea and castor butter on my ends. 3rd tip: braid or twist, only to about an inch from your ends, then fingercoil. This helps prevent tangles and breakage during take down. 4th tip: tuck your ends in! I wear loose 2-strand twists and I tuck my ends into all kinds of buns. 5th tip: Use your SILK bonnets and scarves, beyond just sleeping in them. I wear my silks, a lot, to protect my hair from environmental damage, rubbing against fabrics and from my own hands. BUT I, also, make sure that my scalp and strands get plenty of air and sunlight. It's a balance 😉 6th tip: Download the Moroccan Method lunar calendar and trim your ends according to that schedule. I don't like trimming my length. I hate it, actually. But, to avoid drastic cuts, I trim purposefully and consistently. I get to keep my length while being proactive about getting rid of damaged ends. Bonus tip: use the cleanest ingredients that you can find! This encourages the overall health and strength of your hair. Which means that, as your hair grows, it will be stronger, more elastic and less likely to split and break. 💖

@dinamcintosh5782
@dinamcintosh5782 2 жыл бұрын
@@solarlola5953 cutting the hair in sync with the cycles of the moon, is very old school. I like the Moroccan lunar calendar because it sets purpose for every trim. For example, trimming for thickness, length, beauty - each purpose has a date. Like, if you want to beautify your hair (shine, curl, anti-frizz, etc.) the time to trim, for that purpose, is coming up on the 22nd of August. This method is super helpful for people like me who are scissor-shy. It helps to dust off a few centimeters of hair, when I know that there is a purpose. Dusting off the ends of my hair, consistently, means that when it's time for an actual trim, I don't have to cut as much, all at once. Painting my ends with gelatin is just using a dye brush to apply a gelatin treatment to my ends. I have low porosity hair, so, I only use hydrolyzed protein throughout my whole head, every 8-10 weeks. My ends need direct protein treatments more often than the rest of my hair. Let me find the link to the treatment that I use

@@kensmb8668 Try adding diluted ACV (Apple Cider Vinegar) on top of your conditioner. This has changed the detangling process for me. I love coconut vinegar and that's what I use instead but it's more expensive than ACV and not always easily available depending on where you live, you may have to order it online or go to an organic food store. I use a ratio of 1:3 (1 part vinegar to 3 parts water), spray my scalp and root first then the rest of my hair. With this method, I've noticed that I no longer need to use a deep conditioner or let it sit for 15 minutes minimum, a regular rinse out conditioner works fine. I only use a deep conditioner if I kept a protective style with added hair (crochets, braid or twists with extensions) for 2-3 months or longer. I apply the deep conditioner, let it sit under a warm cap when time is over, spray with the vinegar lotion, detangle and rinse everything out. When using the rinse out conditioner, I spray my scalp first, then apply conditioner to my hair starting from the roots then the ends, I cover the lengths last. I then spray the vinegar lotion from root to tip, smooth my hair down then start detangling. When I want to give extra tlc to my hair, I'll just do the greenhouse method overnight using my favorite oils.The reasoning behind using vinegar is that vinegar being acidic, it closes the cuticles further making the hair smoother thus easing the detangling. I started with using vinegar only to detangle then kept experimenting different ways including using the vinegar before the conditioner to each section then detangle but the feeling of having vinegar directly sit on my hair so long didn't feel right to me so I switched it around. Plus I believe that washing our hair doesn't need to be a whole day process when we use the right knowledge, tools, and techniques. Adding vinegar has significantly reduced my wash day from shampoo to styling and because you're adding the vinegar on top of your conditioner, you don't need to worry about its smell lingering. When you shampoo, you can increase friction between your hair strands, that's why it's important to use a good conditioner or leave-in. Any vinegar works but as natural we all prefer ACV with the mother because of its properties plus I like multipurpose products and vinegar is one of them. Vinegar also helps with dry itchy scalp. Try also adding more conditioner to your roots since that's where you have the most tangles. Yes most tips say to focus on the lengths and ends of your hair but we forget that due to gravity the root is where the strands are thicker, much denser and tighter and it's also the newest and healthiest part. Also lot of sweating on the scalp can cause roots to tangle. Always work in sections and make sure your parts are very neat at the roots when you section your hair. "Borrowed" hair creates tangles. Hair has a memory and that's the principal behind reusing the same parts. Seal your roots often. You can try oil rinsing on your roots only as it helps to seal the moisture in and lubricate the hair. When you dry your hair, focus on stretching your roots with bantu knots, banding or braids. Twisting doesn't stretch the roots enough but if you like twists, start them with a braid first. Once your hair is dry, you can remove the braid and start twisting from the root if you prefer that way. When you have roots that tangle or get easily matted, the key is to make sure your roots are well moisturized, detangled, stretched, and lubricated. Hope these few tips help! Thank you🙏🏾

I wonder if your propensity for tangles is an indicator that you need a trim. I am curious because my hair tangles easily too and this is what I have been told

Trimming can definitely help reduce tangles but my hair naturally tangles anyway. As hair ages, it weathers so some intensification of tangling is expected.

I'm not understanding your reasoning behind keeping your hair stretched. Is your "natural" hair state not meant to be "coily/curly" ... are you going against "natural"? It's good to put "disclaimers" on some of these "claims" ... instead of speaking like an "authority"
@CoilyCode
@CoilyCode Жыл бұрын
I believe she may not be presenting herself as an "authority," but rather, as the title suggests, she is sharing her personal secrets to retaining hair length. Wearing your hair stretched might help reduce breakage and knotting at the ends, since a straighter texture could prevent the hair from looping around itself and causing tangles. It doesn't seem like she is "against" anything, but simply offering some tips. If these suggestions don't apply to you, that's completely fine. There isn't a single right or wrong way to grow natural hair. Personally, I enjoy doing wash n gos in the first quarter of the year and protective styling for the rest. It's all about discovering what you like and what works best for you!

@@CoilyCode if one is on "the tube", a very "public" forum, and presents a "theory" without stating the "disclaimers" then the assumption is they're talking as an "authority" ... and the "public" is free to "question/comment". I'll assume you watched the video again ... and saw the "part" where she didn't speak as an "authority"? Please point me to that part. I'll also assume, you can answer the rest of my question on why the "hair is coily in the first place if it's meant to be straightened" ... since you chose to be "her" spokesperson?

Like it or not this is how 4c/4b hair is. When raised in a society that praises straight/wavy/curly hair, our natural kinky hair looks "unkempt" because we are not use to it. It's time to accept it. It's time to stop hiding it, avoiding it and manipulating it to be what it's not.
