I have a 2019 Lexus ES with the Premium package. I wanted the F-Sport with a panoramic roof, but unfortunately it is only available on the Ultra Luxury trim which I did not want. My sister has a 2013 Avalon Limited, last generation, which to me, falls between the Camry and the ES when it comes up luxury. Given they have so much in common, you can’t go wrong with either vehicle. There is a clear difference in quality of materials and technology between these vehicles which justifies the 5K difference in price. In my opinion, both cars are worthy contenders, and the better car is the one that best meets the needs and requirements of the customer.

I like the ES, I owned a 2015, and I like the front of the Lexus better. However I drove the Avalon this time and I liked it. It's not quite as refined as the Lexus, which really is to be expected, but it certainly is not that much below the Lexus in ride quality and interior refinement. The "real" difference happens when you go and try to make a deal. The $5K stated in this review quickly becomes closer to $10K when you are sitting in the chair talking money. I like the fact that the rear seats are heated, and fold down. Unavailable in the ES at any trim. To me it just was not worth the difference as the drivetrain is basically the same. I ended up buying the Avalon Limited loaded out the door for $37K, and am very happy with my decision.

Both the ES and Avalon are the respective best versions of themself this generation. But I’ve been in both cars and make no mistake, the ES is a far nicer car inside and out. The design is more elegant, the ride more supple, and as nice as the Avalon’s interior is, the ES is still nicer with nicer materials. The ES is in fact so good, it nearly renders the larger LS pointless if it wasn’t for its RWD/AWD architecture and executive rear seat. For $5,000 more, the ES is the way to go.

I think that grills are an important part of corporate identity. From the beginning the most obvious thing that distinguishes a Rolls-Royce, Mercedes, Buick, Packard were their grills. By and large the silhouette or profiles of cars change every decade to some extent. Regarding Lexus’ grill, I think of it as a shark nose where they’ve figured out how to integrate the grill into the shape itself instead of the grill underlining a horizonral crossmember functioning as the leading edge. I’m not fond of the Toyota’s two diagonal lines leading to the Toyota emblem in the center. To me it looks like the envelope flap on a lady’s purse with monogram in the center as a magnetic snap like Coach and Louis Vuitton make rendering all Toyota sedans chick mobiles. That’s what they look like to me. Rolling pocketbooks sailing around town.

The Lexus uses different sheet-metal and has more sound deadening materials that's why is quieter than the Avalon. The ES (all Lexus) also uses Lexus exclusive paint that is more expensive than what they use in a Toyota. The ES also has a brace behind the backseat that makes the car stiffer (not the suspension) than the Avalon but also loses the folding rear seats (most luxury cars don't have folding rear seats).

Had a Avalon Limited thinking save money. Loved the car but sadly at not even 2 years old / 20k miles the interior roof was falling apart (3 overnight stays at the dealer to finally fix), the motorized sunshade broke and then the sunroof refused to close. Traded it for a Lexus ES and no problems at all.

Toyota can get away with low price gaps on their luxury cars because of resale value. Try doing that with Ford/Lincoln...

Okay, the Avalon is a full-size car. Is the ES considered a full-size car now too? Does this mean the ES is larger than the Camry? Or is the ES size still compared to the mid-size Camry? So confused.
@tonysterbenc Жыл бұрын
The ES and Avalon are basically the same size, and the Camry is a half size down. The ES has different interior trim that's thicker in some places, which noses its interior cubic footage just below the EPA's "large car" threshold, and the Avalon's is just over it. But as a practical matter, they're the same size interior.

That and the availability of heated rear seats only on Avalon were weird disparities between the two. I'm pretty sure the teams that developed the two were quite independent from each other. I'd guess Avalon got those features to separate it from Camry, and ES left them off to hold the price down to the same neighborhood as the previous ES.

@@thecriticalthinkeroutsidet4947 Toyota's Avalon is the only competitive sedan in that segment, I completely agree. Perhaps Toyota should communicate with their core Avalon buyers to encourage them to make a new purchase, then extend to the new demographic they're targeting in order to slow flagging sales. Otherwise they may have to rush a refresh of the front end in order to keep traditional Avalon buyers out of other large cars and crossover vehicles. Honda had a similar problem a few years ago with the Civic, which resulted in a short generation because the company couldn't afford to continue a slipping sales trend.

Personally, I'd go for the Lexus. However, Toyota dropped the ball on this. Only FWD is a huge flaw, power to match an Avalon is another flaw, and the no available touch screen is another flaw. Personally, for the F sport, a tuned V6 pushing close to 380-400 hp with RWD standard and AWD as an option would make more sense, since it is an F Sport. Also, make it a touch screen. Easier to use.
@terbennett5 жыл бұрын
An F Sport and an F are not the same. F Sport is a cosmetic trim package mostly, like the TRD Avalon. In my opinion, the Lexus customer support alone makes it worth the money.

Is it true the Lexus is designed to be quieter? I believe Lexus adds materials that provides noise reduction inside the cabin. Very curious here as I'm looking at both cars now.
@michaelgrant52585 жыл бұрын
Well they use the same acoustic windshield & front side windows( Avalon equipped on all trims, ES is Premium & above). They bolt have laser welded frames & fluid engine mounts. Only real difference without tearing the car apart would be the noise reducing wheels & non fold-able rear seat on the ES to reduce road noise. I'd like to test the two to see how far they truly are apart.

@@michaelgrant5258 thank you!
@tonysterbenc Жыл бұрын
@@michaelgrant5258 This answer unfortunately was not entirely accurate. The floorpan of the ES is more extensively insulated, covering 93% of the underbody. The ES has extra structural bracing in front across the shock towers as well as the brace behind the rear seat, reducing chassis flex and vibration. In addition, the Luxury and Ultra Luxury include Yamaha Performance Dampers at the front and back of the chassis to absorb subtle low-frequency resonances for a calmer ride, as well as the aforementioned wheels with noise reduction chambers built into them.

Items included in Touring are à la carte on Lexus ES350 F-Sport including premium sound, headlights, HUD, and adaptive suspension. Most reviewers fail to point this out when comparing the two. 6X fewer Lexus dealers and cars to choose from and less negotiating power. No thanks, I could buy new Avalon or other vehicle in 5 years and get the latest and greatest for 20% less price.
