I agree we should educate ourselves on how to read labels etc., but there are people out there who fall for this stuff like my disabled mother. Teach her to make her own protein bars. Experiment. . I guarantee she does not have jars of potassium sorbate and artificial emulsifiers, so she can only possibly make minimally processed versions as long as she does not cheat by buying any of these ingredients, such as ultra processed chocolate, pre-made by mass production. I have made my own chocolate minimally processed and it is absolutely delicious.

I’m from Russia. My sister had been living in the US for a few months by the Work and Travel program for students. She’s tall and naturally skinny with model’s parameters. She got home in such a terrible shape, like if she was bitten by bees or transformed into a hamster with its cheeks being full of food, and with gastrointestinal problems… I asked was she eating McDonald’s all the time? She said it was ordinary food from supermarkets… She soon regained her natural body shape here in Russia naturally, without diets, just eating the same food as usual… It was about 10 years ago and it said a lot to me about what Americans eat. Also, she lost her “American dream” back then.

Problem is, most people only look at the front of the box. They see the buzz words, the colors, the attractive designs, over everything else. That “satiating” burger is ridiculous. I stopped eating fast food years ago, but I still eat burgers. I eat them at an actual restaurant or I make my own. I always find that the burger is more than enough to make me full. In fact, sometimes I don’t finish the restaurant burger and take the rest home to have as part of my lunch the next day. Just two days ago, I had a burger from hungry jacks, because I was curious about what it would taste like to me after all this time. It was from their gourmet range, and the patty actually looked bigger than what I usually get. The patty and the bun had absolutely no flavour. Not only that, I ended up eating the chips as well, because the burger wasn’t enough to fill me up. Plus, the chicken salt in the chips was the only flavour in the meal. So no, fast food burgers are not satiating. Not by a long shot!

Speaking from a trainer’s perspective, that Gatorade bar in particular is usually used as a meal replacement. Usually if someone wants to still maintain a medium surplus for their macros then the usual 160 calories wouldn’t be enough to cut it. While the sugar content is a bit much, it could definitely be a lot worse if this bar is being consumed by someone who doesn’t have somewhat of an active lifestyle.

Interesting item: We have lately seen the introduction of automated bread making machines in some of our local north Idaho supermarkets. neat idea as far as it goes. Not cheap, though. But here's the thing. I purchased a loaf about 4 weeks ago. I used part of it, and the remaining third got shoved back into the bread/pasta shelf. I happened to remember it, and cringed at the thought of the mold festival I felt certain I'd find. Nope. That remaining third of a loaf was as pristine as when I first stored it away. So what in the name of John Moses Browning allows a loaf of bread to to remain intact and unspoiled for weeks? Not sure I want to know. Needless to say, we won't be buying any more of THAT! @@annetteleggett9854 if you go this route it's easy to incorporate making bread with a bread maker into your life. I would say you should use unbleached flour as bleached flour has more nutrients "bleached" out of it. Then you want to look at the quality of your butter because UPFs are a thing there too. I would say that you will have a better product making your own bread in a breadmaker. If you want to avoid UPFs don't use the bread mixes made for bread machines, if you do that you might as well buy a loaf of Mrs. Baird's bread. Add your own milk, water, yeast, flour, and butter. Know that it's not a complicated process and you get a wonderful quality product that will not last weeks. Good luck from an old Nana who loves to bake bread!

I know you said you don’t want to know, but I worked in a bakery at a grocery store and want to share. I assume it is the same process as a person working. Basically you add water and yeast to a big bag of “mix”. Most breads should only have 3-5 ingredients aside from mix ins. I read the label on the bread mix bag and it was HUGE. I don’t remember all the ingredients, but it had coloring added, vitamins and minerals added, and loads of preservatives. I left places like that for artisan bakeries because I love making something reasonably processed that molds in less than a week. It feels more “right”. Also, if you want your bread to last, you should only store it at room temp or freeze. The fridge makes it get really weird. If you toast frozen bread it’s pretty much exactly the same as day old bread.

Making bread by hand without anything more than a mixer to speed up the kneading is not at all difficult. If/when I buy ready made bread, my gut gurgles unhappily. When I make my own I have no digestive issues. Highly recommend. It's not a lot of active work, but does require a couple of hour for proofing and baking.

Heh. When not even fungi want the food, things aren't great. Traditionally made bread basically needs to be consumed the day it's made. Next day it already tastes off and the texture is bad. Add a couple more days and it's a moldy mess. You can usually freeze bread though and it stays great. Thaw in the oven or air fryer and it feels fresh again.

Another great video. I’m going to play it for my family at dinner tonight. In the past, we’ve all fallen for the so-called health foods that are loaded with carbs and sugar. Last night, my daughter was shopping for protein shakes and I explained to her how to read the labels. I think just so many people don’t know to do that or don’t understand how. I grew up in the 80s and 90s, being told fat was the ultimate enemy, only to find out (after I was fat) that it’s really carbs and sugar.

I have been surprised by how otherwise educated and intelligent people do not know how to read and interpret the nutritional lables. I had a nurse practitioner proudly tell me her soda was only 159 calories. I had to point out yes for 1 serving, but the bottle was not 1 serving but 2.5 servings, so 375 calories. She hadn't noticed serving size.

In hindsight, it's absolutely wild how dieticians and nutritionists and scientists and government officials looked at the food pyramid, saw " *6-11 servings of grains recommended per day* ", and thought "yep, that's good advice! 😊"

Gatorade bars are one of the things I eat when backpacking. 20g of whey protein, tons of carbs; so awesome for when you need energy in a calorie-dense package. The value of a food depends a lot on context.

As someone who has competed in strength sports for over a decade, and someone who then lost 100lbs after I was done competing seriously, the Gatorade protein bar for an athlete makes sense. The high carb counts, even if sugar, replenishes glycogen after a hard session. That in addition to protein promotes recovery post workout. For the average Joe, it's definitely not a health food, but "science backed" and "choice of the pros" both make sense. A lot of pro athletes eat a lot of sugar. Matt Fraser, 5x Fittest Man on Earth, said he never wants to eat another Snickers again after retiring from crossfit, because he was slamming them in addition to powdered Gatorade made into a sludge to have the sugar count high, to keep up with demands. I think a bigger problem (at least in America), is how food labels can be blatantly wrong via the 5 calorie per serving loophole. PAM olive oil cooking spray is marketed as 0 calories for a 7oz can, when there's really closer to 1500 calories in it. But they list 1 serving as a quarter second spray, and 665 servings in a can. That serving size is absurd and nobody adheres to it anyway, and people are spraying it liberally thinking it has no calories, when the first ingredient listed is olive oil, which is very calorie dense. Also, serving sizes in general on nutrition labels should be closer to actual servings people eat, nobody is eating 1/3 cup of ice cream 😂

I'm commenting again, blowing it up, this was such a good video. Thank you so much for making it. I've been struggling for a number of years with my weight. I was good once for a time. Just had a focus on whole food, more plant based meals. I maintained for a while. Then I got a new position at work, and started treating myself to burger king sometimes for work lunch. I saw the other guys do it, and like it became appealing. I was poor, and sometimes my phone would be shut off, burger kings wifi reached the parking lot, so that's how I had my lunch. 5 years later, despite being a sahm now, and cooking whole foods often.(I'm well versed in the kitchen now, started cooking at 12yrs old, now 37, ive a lot of pride in my culinary abilities).. despite this, I'm 80 pounds heavier still today. I have food addiction and being isolated in the burbs in a non walkable area is just the pits, and I snack, way too often. I've watched my perfectly good salad ingredients rot in the fridge as I put cheese on corn chips and grab my homemade hot sauce I basically could drink on its own I love it so much. ... Ah. This kind of video is such a good reminder to stay tough. Vote with our dollar, and one day we WILL have a better America for our children. To end, and only because I feel vocal about this- my favorite grocery store, because they have access to many local foods, is just over a half a mile away from me, directly, without use of roads, just measured straight. - I have to take a highway to get there, a walkable distance with only woods and a river to cross, and I have to take a fkin highway. Ok.

I liked this video! I almost didn't watch tho..something about the title/thumbnail made it seem like it was just going to reiterate things I already knew. I want people to see it because I really liked your newscast theme and it had some great info! Maybe trying a title about the "food industry hiding the truth about processed foods" or "the food industry doesn't want the government to tell you about processed foods" or "the government stays silent about dangers of processed foods" or "the food industry would hate for americans to know the truth about processed foods." Sorry for the unsolicited advice! I hope you and your partner and pets are doing well.

I saw those gatorade bars in my local grocery store very recently! I pointed them out to a friend while shopping saying "Gatorade makes protein bars now??" to which they looked at them and said something like "that's worrying." While popular "health foods" aren't getting scrutinized much by the general public, I'm glad to see some people still keeping a cautious eye out!

I agree with your points on the gatorade protein bar; however if we examine gatorates sports drinks, they are also full of sugar (other than the specific sugar free ones of course). I think their reasoning behind having lots of sugar in their products is that its being used by athletes who are in need of lots of calories that are quick to be turned over into energy, like simple sugars. I agree that there are healthier choices for your calories than sugar though.

While I'm far from a Gatorade fan, their bars actually have excellent macros when eaten in the context of endurance sports which is what they were meant for. If I'm racing I an 8+hr event I actively try to find products with similar sugar, fat and protein content to eat during. Its all about context of when to consume, but most people don't realize that and equate sports nutrition meant to be eaten during activitie as healthy in every other context. So their science backed claims are valid if eaten during high intensity activities, but a disclaimer would be helpful for people as they are definitely not a grab and go "health" food

I was having a conversation with a friend about this topic (they are in their 40s and I'm in my mid 20s). While they grew up without processed and ultra processed food, I did. They have a greater resistance to those foods and enjoy eating home cooked foods. I on the other hand consciously and unconsciously prefer ultra processed food over home cooked food. We came to the conclusion that it was because I disliked how even the same dish can taste slightly different each and every time. Oreos taste the same every single time.
