- More customer F*CK UP!
Well, where do I start? I've said this plenty of times; I encourage owners to fix their cars as long as they are confident that they are doing it correctly. If you are not sure on what you're doing, you should be doing research, or be supervised by a professional.
On this video, we fitted a customer provided steering rack on an Iveco Daily Maxi- fairly straightforward this job as there is nothing in the way of taking the rack out. We then moved on to a Mercedes Benz C180 to fit a wheel bearing and the most shocking, scary job of them all, fitting a coil spring. This job went relatively well but there is always a little something that gets in the way. THE MOST HORRENDOUS job of them all, 2010 Audi Q3 in for a Parking Brake Diagnostic. Customer stated that his electronic parking brake stopped working due to failed control module (Correctly Diagnosed by the AA). We then later found that there is something very very very dangerous on the repair that was done by the customer. THIS ONE REALLY SURPRISED/SCARED US! Finally, we fixed a crank/cam correlation code on a 2011 Audi A3 2.0 TDI.
Thank you for watching!

I fix my own car because I refuse to play $90 an hour to someone slightly more skilled than a basic trainee on $20 an hour and then have the cheek to double the price on parts they buy compared to what I can buy them for at retail price, and they buy them cheaper at trade prices.

I lost count of the number of times garages did either a shoddy job and didn't tighten bolts properly so things fell off on the way home, or tried to rip me off on some parts that didn't need replacing (Refused to show me the old part too- never tell them it's super urgent if you can avoid it, they see the desperation and know your are more likely to Just pay the extra cost and leave). If you find a good garage then use them when you can, with any big job, but it is worth getting handy as best as you can, but still.. peeps have got to know their limits, a lot of jobs need special tools and experience to do properly. Some Technical knowledge and ability is necessary even with fluid changes and wheel changes.

I would not class myself as a car mechanic, I had very little money when I bought my first car/van it was a mk 3 escort, this was in 1990, showing my age. But I always I did any repairs on all my cars from ford to mercs to bmw. My last was a ml320. Because of my ill health I no longer drive. The hardest job I ever did was a c220 estate starter, it was a struggle so was done with the use of about 4feet of extensions on my socket which was a bugger because it was snowing. But never the less I did every job myself. Great stuff guys

Another informative video. When you installed the wheel bearing on the Mercedes, you skipped the run-out adjustment with a dial indicator. If you do another bearing, can you show this key step please, as it's a critical piece - folks may just assume you pop the split lock nut on, tighten and it's done. Thanks.

I'm not a mechanic, but I've done a few trackrod ends and found a set of cheap digital calipers to measure the threads to the locknut saves you a few min of squinting at screw threads if anything. Also useful for other automotive measuring tasks. Good choice of music with the spring compressor 🤣

I pay you for your knowledge" I have been working on cars and bikes for a long time as home fixer. learned a lot over the years but I am well aware of where my limit is and that's where my local bloke comes in. Mostly because some jobs just shit me and paying them to swear at it is worth every cent. And gives me a laugh. Trust is a mechanics biggest asset and I have seen quite a few total thieves.

That copper grease was a bit excessive. Is the stuff condctive? The front springs on the W204 Merc are a pig of a job to change. I had to get my mechanic to do the spring swap on my 2009 C200 once I'd got the struts off. As Ivan of Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics would say, the parking brake repair on the Audi was a No Parts Required (NPR) repair.

Coppergrease used to be used by mechanics many years ago on the old single "Lucar" type connections of pre 70s cars. Many times these connectors were two dissimilar metals, so without something they would corrode very quickly. Using dielectric grease is more of a modern idea.
