As many parents know, turning off a child's gaming console in the middle of gameplay is a surefire way to trigger a tantrum. WSJ Family & Tech columnist Julie Jargon explains why.

Baha Yeşilyurt No the parents need to stop being jerks to their kids for internet fame. Of course the child is going to react negatively, their parent who they look up to is going around screwing up their game that they are invested in and spending their time on. So, since I know all the games he's playing, I establish a clear goal: "When you finish this level, let's turn off" or "Ok, last try, then, let's turn off". Taking something away in the middle of an action will make that reaction. Playing with toys is like creating movie. If I take a toy away during a "scene" he will scream his lungs out.

The psychologist here has a huge blind spot. The reason why kids react this way is that in video games in particular they are invested in trying to win and their investment over the past X number of minutes are suddenly reset. In an online multiplayer game there is further a social aspect of embarrassment and letting down their teammates. These parents don't realize what they are doing to their kids is the equivalent of margin calling one of their stocks to sell at a loss or suddenly being thrown off the field in the middle of a softball league match. It's pretty traumatic. The psychologists should have tried playing before regurgitating their prior findings. Parents trying to effectively regulate play behavior need to convey an understanding of their child's psychological investment and beneficial rewards of video gaming, then work with their child to show them that even positive rewards need to be regulated to lead a balanced life style. This can be helped by conveying similar episodes in the parent's own life, such as investment losses or overcommitment to the expectation of colleagues. Ultimately parents need to understand that their child is being exposed to a simulation of real world problems that they themselves often have trouble handling. They need to understand it's difficult, and the solution will only come with practice. On the other hand, this is actually opportunity for the child to get an early start on developing psychological skills that will make them more empowered and disciplined as adults.

Change my mind but these are bad parents. And the point of them saying if you take away a child’s legos or books and they wouldn’t cry is inaccurate. I would cry from my mom just threatening to take my toys away from me when I was young. I can understand a kid becoming a bit too addicted and it’s time to take action by helping them. But when they’re just enjoying a game because it’s a fun hobby, it’s bad parenting to take their game away. They’re missing the point here. Imagine if you were on the computer working on something, it would get you an A+ but you didn’t save it and someone turns off your computer? Are you telling me they wouldn’t freak out? Also, I think it really is disgusting to turn off your kids game and record it for a public use video as if it’s funny. Like, you’re not a good person. The kid probably spent hours on that game and is upset because you took away all their progress or even kill streak. 3:50, could you make any more basic “enforcements” with asking parents to set limits and tell their kids when it’s bedtime, and they talk as if video games are evil. They’re making video games look like they are controlling the entire lives of people. Just chill man, it’s a little device that gives people a ton of fun. Why does the news hate video games, they need to be sprayed with some holy water and if their heads spin, we know.

@torenonion
@torenonion 3 жыл бұрын
There are not really many concerns, and blaming the adults in these situations are correct. They unplugged a console with a game you need to save. Think of it as if you were reading a book and the book mark was the save part. Someone takes your book mark out and shuts the book throws it away and you get mad right? This is what the adults are doing. You need to be a role model not someone your kids look at as a terrorist. The only concern i can think of is them not spending time with you. I suggest you play a nice game like Animal crossing or Minecraft with your kids. Minecraft costs $30 but i think its worth it. If you think there are other concerns I suggest you set a time limit of 3-4 hours a day.

0:19 Yeah the thing is books and legos can be paused in between and then resumed. Video games have advanced greatly and you usually complete one or two tasks in the span of one session with few opportunities to pause and/or save in between. Jesus Christ as a gamer it’s insane how people fail to understand why having your game shut off in the middle of a two hour sequence with no saves is much more frustrating than someone taking your book or a Lego.

The comments section here has some really solid points but it kinda feels all over the place and slightly confrontational... Basically, a large percentage of video games don't really tend to autosave unless the game reaches some logical point like the start or end of a mission as that is easier on the memory and RAM. As such, shutting down the device suddenly means a lot of pretty limited time tends to get wasted for no apparent rhyme or reason. As such, anger is the quickest response to come to the surface... Plain and simple...

I identified the boss! It’s void termina, the final boss of the story mode in Kirby Star Allies. It’s in it’s bird(?) form, I’m not sure if it’s the last physical form or not, but after the outside phases you go inside void termina to defeat it’s core (with again multiple phases) I don’t remember finding this phase too difficult but it certainly is a challenge, even more for a young child like the one playing in the video. Also, the parent turned off the tv with the remote I think, and the switch is also a portable console, which means the child did not loose all their progress. The game was either still going or paused (I have a switch so I know how this stuff works, my switch battery died while I was playing and after charging it for a while the game was still going, though it was animal crossing so idk how it behaves for Kirby games), but if they died they would probably have to start from the beginning of the boss or the phase. I hope they got their progress back, in this case it’s easily recoverable :] I hope this was somewhat useful idk

Videos like this really highlight the importance of understanding a technology before you report on it! Anyone who plays video games could tell you how frustrating it can be to make a lot of progress in a game you really love, just for the game to crash without saving and all your progress is gone. That's basically what's happening here; the parents are unintentionally destroying what could possibly have been HOURS of effort that a child put in to a game for a viral video. The psychologist in this video compares turning off a video game console in the middle of play to taking a book away or confiscating legos; that comparison shows how little those involved in this story understand how video games work! A closer comparison would be if a parent took and ripped up a child's book, or smashed their nearly finished lego project on the ground. THAT's why these kids get so upset. This was a few years ago, so I'm greatly looking forward to the newer generation of journalists who are much better acquainted with the technology they report on.

What happens when someone is invested in something and you cut it off midway.. unable to go back to that moment to correct it. Think about a father watching their favorite team play a game in basketball or football. You turn off the tv that’s showing the live broadcast. What will happen?
