This episode was aired on February 18, 1959. Sadly, Colonel Gerald G. Cooney passed away from a heart attack at just 46, on June 10, 1961 (DOB: August 10, 1914). So very, very sad that he survived the horrendous war but died so young of heart disease. I also found out today that he had a son named Gerald George Cooney, who also served in the Army like his father, and fought in the Vietnam War. He passed away at an even younger age than his father, at 36-37 (1950 -1987). I don't know what he passed away from because it's not listed on the site I found him on, but it breaks my heart to know this piece information. Thank you both for serving our country and both of you are heroes.❤

These ppl love to judge those men who also fought and died to protect THEIR freedom by 21st century standards which is pathetic on every level, can you imagine them stood by an anti aircraft gun during the battle of Britain telling those trying to shoot down bombers before they get the chance to wipe out a whole town of women and children that they should be ashamed of themselves and there's no excuse for shooting at ppl🤔 or those american soldiers in the pacific that often had to protect the Japanese civilians from their own soldiers they were wrong🤔 Or maybe stand in front of the third reich as they march into France in 1940 getting ready to systematically murd*r another part of 6.6 million innocent souls for being Jewish and shame them with words until they turn around and go home🤔 the delusion..... A guy in the British Royal Air Force, stood 5ft 7inches and weighed about 10 stone. Skinny runt who his squadron believed would never be able to react in an emergency, because of the way he talked and his build. Going on board a navy ship, he and three others were badly injured when the gangway collapsed and they fell 30 feet into the harbour. Despite suffering multiple life threatening injuries, he supported one of the other victims until help arrived. They didn't think he was injured because he was swimming around and helping the girl. When his boss walked into hospital to see him he said, 'well done you proved us wrong'

I saw Hacksaw Ridge last night and it is great movie. It doesn't portray his life or actions on Okinawa with 100% accuracy but than no movie ever does that. Andrew Garfield's role is convincing and powerful. The battle scenes are intense and graphic and the sound effects are epic. You can hear the sounds of bullets slamming into their targets, whatever that may be. It is a bit slow in the beginning as it develops background on Doss but once he enters the Army it grabs your attention and keeps it for the rest of the film. The theater was packed with only a few empty seats and the audience applauded when it ended. Go see this one.

@@colinbanning9416 I agree but i think people like Desmond are not that rare. There are many good people. Desmond is more of a special case because of the adversity he faced getting into the army and then the absolute acceptance of him by the men he served with. His is a particularly touching story that leaves me completely humbled. I wonder how badly the men who originally rejected him must have felt.

@@Will_CH1 12 hours on hacksaw ridge encarpment under brutal japanese sniper fire and artillery....without a weapon pulling 75 wounded comrades to safety without regard for his life for the sake of his comrades.....Id say that is very rare! 1 in 1000000.

A great man from a great generation. My father and six of my uncles served and fought fascism in WWII. They're all long gone now, and I miss them. Thanks for this post! Seeing those remarkable (i.e., bizarre) ads now days is a trip.

This man not only saved 100 guys but he changed how thousands of men saw life, god and a simple man after seeing Desmond do what he did and after everyone thought he was a loser

A handsome gift package to one of the most deserving people that ever lived. This man is beyond a legend! I hope he got his extra ten acres and enjoyed his car, tractor, tools and everything else, for if any man ever earned it he surely did.
