I've just watched Hacksaw Ridge and came here to see the man himself. The word hero gets thrown around a little too easily nowadays, this man is the textbook definition of a hero. Nice to see he went on to enjoy a happy life.

I'm proud to say Desmond Doss is from my home town, Lynchburg Virginia. We have many things here in place for a memorial to Desmond Doss. His old home has also been turned into a home for homeless veterans. God greatly used Desmond. We are so proud of him! He was true blue thru it all.

This episode was aired on February 18, 1959. Sadly, Colonel Gerald G. Cooney passed away from a heart attack at just 46, on June 10, 1961 (DOB: August 10, 1914). So very, very sad that he survived the horrendous war but died so young of heart disease. I also found out today that he had a son named Gerald George Cooney, who also served in the Army like his father, and fought in the Vietnam War. He passed away at an even younger age than his father, at 36-37 (1950 -1987). I don't know what he passed away from because it's not listed on the site I found him on, but it breaks my heart to know this piece information. Thank you both for serving our country and both of you are heroes.❤

I know, I'd bet every one of them have never known conviction selflessness self sacrifice courage etc all the basic things built into the character of a man like this and many others of a generation that still had morals and decency who where asked to go fight and die thousands of miles from home to protect ppl they didn't know against real life genocidal monsters and stop it reaching america. These ppl love to judge those men who also fought and died to protect THEIR freedom by 21st century standards which is pathetic on every level, can you imagine them stood by an anti aircraft gun during the battle of Britain telling those trying to shoot down bombers before they get the chance to wipe out a whole town of women and children that they should be ashamed of themselves and there's no excuse for shooting at ppl🤔 or those american soldiers in the pacific that often had to protect the Japanese civilians from their own soldiers they were wrong🤔 Or maybe stand in front of the third reich as they march into France in 1940 getting ready to systematically murd*r another part of 6.6 million innocent souls for being Jewish and shame them with words until they turn around and go home🤔 the delusion..... If these brave men could hear the arrogance and complacency coming from these fools who only know greed and excess🙏🙏🙏

A guy in the British Royal Air Force, stood 5ft 7inches and weighed about 10 stone. Skinny runt who his squadron believed would never be able to react in an emergency, because of the way he talked and his build. Going on board a navy ship, he and three others were badly injured when the gangway collapsed and they fell 30 feet into the harbour. Despite suffering multiple life threatening injuries, he supported one of the other victims until help arrived. They didn't think he was injured because he was swimming around and helping the girl. When his boss walked into hospital to see him he said, 'well done you proved us wrong'

I could write all night and still not be able to convey my thoughts about this man. When you think you have read and watched all there is about the heroes that have walked among us then you stumble across the story of Desmond T Doss. A war hero unlike no other I have read or heard about that becomes a giant among them all. I am in awe of this man and what he did for the men he describes as his buddy's, a lot of them who barely gave him the time of day in the beginning but were proud and grateful to have known him by the end. An amazing story that is long over due from being told. I'm very happy to see a movie has been made about him, more of us need to know about this man. The world would be a much nicer place if more men like Desmond T Doss were in it.

I saw Hacksaw Ridge last night and it is great movie. It doesn't portray his life or actions on Okinawa with 100% accuracy but than no movie ever does that. Andrew Garfield's role is convincing and powerful. The battle scenes are intense and graphic and the sound effects are epic. You can hear the sounds of bullets slamming into their targets, whatever that may be. It is a bit slow in the beginning as it develops background on Doss but once he enters the Army it grabs your attention and keeps it for the rest of the film. The theater was packed with only a few empty seats and the audience applauded when it ended. Go see this one.

Watching this brought tears to my eyes, which for me is a very rare event. Desmond Doss is a hero who represented bravery and humility on a level beyond human understanding; only God could so empower a man like this. I so look forward to meeting Desmond in Heaven!

Oh I comprehended what you said just right. Chill out. I was being more sarcastic than dead serious. Still though, that filthy freak doesn't even deserve to be in the same sentence with a hero like Doss. And to get back on point, we do need a show like that back, with real heroes.

I'm an old, ordained, Baptist Minister. My mother and two younger sisters are sincere 7th Day Adventist and I would like to defend 7th Day Adventists. They do nothing, and believe nothing that would be in opposition to the Bible. Adventists are often maligned by ignorant people. I'll happily stick with the Baptists but would never insult or disparage their beliefs. The DAY will come for all of us to see Truth. This man is the epitome of what Jesus wanted for all of us.

It just goes to show that it isn't always the tall well built in your face gung ho type that are the bravest. He showed the whole of the American Army that you don't judge a book by it's cover.

I wonder why I never heard of this Man before, a true Hero in every aspect of the word. Putting his own life on the line so that others could survive, yet with no intention of taking life from anyone along the way, regardless of how dangerous circumstances were at the time. The joy of owning and giving of his beliefs without ever compromising them, ...rewarded here by the giving of Joy.

@@colinbanning9416 I agree but i think people like Desmond are not that rare. There are many good people. Desmond is more of a special case because of the adversity he faced getting into the army and then the absolute acceptance of him by the men he served with. His is a particularly touching story that leaves me completely humbled. I wonder how badly the men who originally rejected him must have felt.
