The funny thing is, SaGa III arguably wasn't "really" a SaGa game either. It was developed by a totally different team from the first two, with very different gameplay. It didn't even involve the series creator, who was off making the first Romancing SaGa for SNES.

I should point out that Ted Woolsey's first localization was not FF Legends/SaGa 3. Instead, that honor belongs to Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, released about a year prior. Despite being made specifically for the west, Mystic Quest was developed in Japan by one of Square's smaller teams, thus requiring a translation.

Regarding Dylan's comment about wanting to be told if games on different systems are significantly different to each other, Sparkster and Animaniacs are completely different on the SNES and Mega Drive despite having the same box art so that may be relevant when they come out (oddly, the Game Boy version is basically a cut-down version of the Mega Drive version so that one can be skipped).

@@MrNightshade2010 With the 2 I mentioned I think the issue stemmed from Nintendo having some sort of deal with Konami where ports of SNES games couldn't appear on other consoles, which would explain the different TMNT, Castlevania and Contra games released for the SNES and Mega Drive (I can't remember exactly if that was the case being as it's been ages since I heard it, but it wouldn't explain why Game Boy Animaniacs is how it is).

Here's a true fact about Wing Commander, most specifically the movie. The screenings during the first weekend showed the first teaser trailer for Star Wars Episode I. When SW fans found out they went to the theatres in droves and paid full ticket price for Wing Commander just to see the trailer. After the trailer ended they promptly left the theatre. Because of that the movie grossed at #1 that weekend even though the majority didn't stay to watch it.

Editor Dylan, would you ever consider perhaps doing deep dives into some of the games being released? Maybe not a let's play but like a video explaining more about a game such as development, release, gameplay, reviews, or if there are different versions of games a look into what's different (if anything). It could be nice supplementary material between the weekly episodes. You could maybe even do the same for consoles. Since we're in 1993 you could keep it at 1993 and back for the time being. Or jump way ahead to 97-99 and when we get to those years later come back to 90-93.

Secret Missions on SNES was my first exposure to Wing Commander, I've loved the franchise ever since. There _are_ different outcomes, however. While (spoiler alert) the Goddard colony is going to get slaughtered by the secret weapon no matter what, completing your missions successfully determines whether or not you play two missions in which the you protect the Tiger's Claw as she retreats, or two missions in which you pursue and destroy the enemy dreadnought that has the weapon. Retreating results in the Kilrathi decimating the Terran Confederation, where they enslave humans to death, while destroying the weapon obviously lets the humans live to fight another day with the Kilrathi emperor executing his admiral for this failure.

I was hoping it was his return to acting in scifi, and he'd soon be in a 'Star Wars: Heir to the Empire' movie. Instead, 20 years later we got about 1 minute of him in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and then find out he tried to kill his nephew, then ran away to live as a hermit. Then dies because he heroically force hologramed himself across the galaxy. {sigh} Although there is a new 'Star Wars: Heir to the Empire' movie CGI adaption without Mark Hamill, by DarthAngelus. And a earlier Motion comic version of the story. But sadly, after the Disney-Verse sequel movies, I tossed my Star Wars stuff.

The Jurassic Park game on SNES actually included a LOT of stuff from the book that wasn't in the movie (including the rocket launcher) so I suspect it was mostly developed without access to anything from the movie other than some production stills used for the scanned images of character faces. Hehehe well, at least Final Fantasy Adventure is the only one that actually has an excuse for the name. The original Japanese name is Final Fantasy Gaiden: Seiken Densetsu, so it wasn't a name change this time. And it does at least feature the similar elements from FF, like the spell names, reused sprites from FF3 NES, and an actual chocobo later in the game. But that's about it, lol. Sword of Mana is an interesting reimagining of it on GBA . I wouldn't say it replaces the original, since it plays very differently, and the story differs a lot, even though the main beats are the same. A more modern 1:1 remake of it called Adventures of Mana is available on smartphones and PS Vita.

I don't like sports OR sports video games, but you've got a good point. The NFL, NBA & so on should be allowed to license themselves to MULTIPLE gaming corporations, otherwise sports games will stagnate. (Like they have, I'm sure) Still, there is SOME competition. The Mario Sports series, including Mario Golf, Tennis & so on. There's also "Golf Story" & the sequel "Sports Story" as well as a fistful of others, so innovation definitely exists, but... it really is a darned shame that EA is commercializing, monopolizing & ultimately killing sports games so much. I mean, PONG was basically meant to be a sports game, technically! It was basically electronic Tennis for crying out loud! (Well, ping pong, but you get the idea.) Sports games & fans thereof DESERVE better!

Well, I am sad to say that Jared make a rare big error. In FFL3, you do NOT recruit monsters. You instead have the option to use special items dropped by monsters you battle to transform your characters INTO said monsters. You can also evolve your monster-transformations into stronger versions of that monster type by repeatedly consuming the same item type. You can revert back to human at any time, though.

This just unlocked a memory, I remember buying used copies of the Final Fantasy Legend games way back in the day and I saw there were two versions available (Sunsoft & Squenix apparently) and I kept looking at different stores until I found the Squenix versions. My only reasoning was that I didn't like the label on the Sunsoft ones 😄

So, fun little fact about Final Fantasy Legend 3 (and the series in general). Final Fantasy Legend 3 in particular is *different* from the first two games because it has a typical RPG progression system such as what you'd find in the Final Fantasy series... including Mystic Quest. In fact, Final Fantasy Legend 3 shares staff with Mystic Quest! The DS remake changes the system up to make it play closer to other SaGa games. As for the SaGa games in general, the series actually stems from series designer Akitoshi Kawazu who had a hand in designing the original Final Fantasy... and Final Fantasy 2. You can look at Final Fantasy 2 and think of it as SaGa 0. Also, he didn't work on Final Fantasy Legend 3 which is why that game is so different from the rest of the series (until the remake). Out of the three Gameboy SaGa games, the third one is my favorite. I used to emulate it on my computer until the 1998 rerelease and I'd use cheats to fly around on the Talon and just mess around. I did eventually beat the game... like four years ago. It's not a hard game but I guess I kept getting distracted and never completed it until recently. I also love SaGa 2 but it also took me until like 4 years ago to finish and that one *is* a hard game until you use a monster meat guide to get the most powerful monster in the game and then you can trivialize every encounter.

It's a well known now that those were actually the Saga games on GB, they also got remade on DS. The first game on the mana series got the same treatment on GB too, and that also got remade on Ps Vita and android and an unique GBA remake which sadly has been forgotten.

Man the Wing Commander movie was bizarre. I watched it specifically because I recognized the title from that one SNES game I rented and enjoyed back when I was even younger. Still, I owe a lot to that franchise and the genre it kicked off. I played the heck out of the X-Wing/Tie Fighter and the FreeSpace games, growing up. Wing Commander ran so games like them could fly.

The Wing Commander movie had notoriety for being the movie that would air, "The Phantom Menace" trailer. Some friends of mine went to see the movie, just so they could see a commercial for another movie that they actually wanted to see. I think South Park went and spoofed this event with their "Russel Crowe Show" episode.

Hey guys, love the series! You totally got the ninja's name from Shinobi wrong though. It's Joe Musashi, not Joe Hayabusa. Easy mistake to confuse it with Ryu Hayabusa from Ninja Garden series.
