I just sent a man off my property who wanted me to remove a hive he thought I would do it for free, when I told him that I wanted 1000 bucks to take his hive out I thought he was gonna stroke out. I stopped doing free removals when they tried to give the bees to another beekeeper. I pulled up and he was loading my equipment. Yeah that didn't go over well. But I got the bees and my boxes. I had to get ill.

Good tips on bidding jobs. I know ya'll get that heat + humidity all the time, being where you are. Here, it's usually quit raining for the summer by late April, then the humidity has time to go down before the 90+ heat gets here. Not this year. We just got another 7 inches last night. I feel for anyone working out in this, it's rough I know. Anyhow, say "Hey" to your Dad for us, and the missus too. Good to see Pete again as well. Have a great time at the conference!

But I did give them information to who could help them... .. hardly any one around here don't do cut outs... The one that I had to walk away from was behind the chimney and going into the wall and I made holes on the inside the wall and no bee's and the lady told me that they were there for 14 year ...

Great video, liked getting to see Pete again and loved getting to see your Dad again! You are right about construction knowledge for sure! 20 years ago I would have tried a bee removal if I knew what I have learned from you in the last year and a half or so. Some places can be dangerous, it depends on how they were built. About 9 years ago I helped my brother in law, meaning I did all the work, to cut a hole thru the 1st story level of his and my sister's house to install a 220 air/heat unit. The house was built in a very remote area and the previous owner had built it himself. I'm glad I had an oscillating tool and chose to use that for the cuts inside and out! When I opened up that wall there was a power feed ran where I didn't expect one, I must have missed it by millimeters at the most. Any other tool and more depth would have got me! The builder had just ran it against the interior drywall. It bent out a little where I had cut and was flush against the drywall thru the rest of the opening, how I missed the topside of the cut must have been a miracle!

Is that in case you forget your smoker and you have to sing a lullaby to the bees? I have never understood why some people would think keeping the bees would pay for the hours of work and all the deconstructing and reconstruction needed!! And if you are paying for it, you are apt to get a better job. There is respect on the contractor and the contratee that isn’t there for a free job. The one doing the job can be taken advantage of and the property owner can be left with a big hole without the pressures of a contract. Both sides benefit.

Randy, thank you for all of the advice on what to watch out for when doing jobs from a financial standpoint and hazards. I would love to see a full video on lessons learned and the stories surrounding them. I had a small business construction company hire me on a handshake for a job at an retirement complex with a HOA. He said he would pay after he got paid. I never saw a penny despite following up in person twice. I have learned to only deal with the homeowner. I might do with a Purchase Order or a contract since that would give me justification for a lien, but, that creates more issues.

Randy, you speak with so much knowledge and experience about biding jobs and construction. You have an advantage over most folks, because of your background with insurance claims. I have no desire to do a cutout although I love watching you do them. Tell your dad I said hello! I definitely understand how health problems can interfere with a man working bees. I’m looking at giving it up myself because I can’t take care of them like they need to be taken care of.

I installed vinyl siding on 3-4 jobs. I really didn’t like the product. I also did a few cut outs. After I found out people in my area didn’t want to pay I quit doing them. They didn’t even want to pay carpenter wages. I said. Carpenters don’t usually have to get stung and wear a hot bee suit to do their work. They just thought I would get bees for my effort.

Find a neighborhood of new home construction.... Study the framing, understanding the space bees need and that "corners and Joints" being where a hive entrance is likely to be. I once estimated a 4 foot soffit job which ended up being 10 feet of comb, plenty of solidified honey, and much more work that I estimated, lesson learned. I cant sell water during a drought.... honey sells itself. Small colonies in dirty situations, lots of hive beetles... after the removal, the brood comb holds that which causes the decline of the colony... toss all of the comb, and make them start fresh and clean. hard lesson learned, lost 3 this season.

Brick veneer home on concrete slab, Bees in the wall cavity.. I told the home owner it was going to entail removing a section of plasterboard to get to the hive and it would cost 1200AUD. They nearly had a fit and said the pest guy quoted 200AUD to exterminate the hive. Guess how that ended for them... 3 years later, same house, another hive and I quoted 2.5K and the guy couldn't get his wallet out fast enough.. Guessing the repair bill from the first hive was enough to make him realise a thing or two😂Always stand your ground on job pricing.

Funny enough me my brother and a friend pulled the engine and transmission out of my old Camaro in forty minutes one time. Of course we were very experienced.

What was the black slime ? Was that disease that wiped out the hive?

Small Hive Beetles invade and lay their eggs. The SHB larva eat the honey, make it rot and it drips out. Real stinky and messy. Then the cockroaches come along.....

@@briansmith6824 was also thinking disease because the whole population was gone but I know how destructive wax moths and hive beetles can be

Funny how customers vanish time to get paid.. I hit them for 165.00 right off the bat basic service call.. they decide to move forward I take the 165.00 off the job.. I know guys run a lot adds charge 250.00 to bid it and it's always 4.995.00 ... They make living off service calls.. bid 6 a day at 250.00 each pretty good money.. I'd bid the first one 400.00 second one 1.200

Great video Randy, my question is this, what is a fair amount to pay a helper for a 4 or 5 hour job?
@628DirtRooster
@628DirtRooster Жыл бұрын
That's something for you to negotiate. It depends on what they bring to the table as far as skill set, abilities and tools. Your helper may be worth more than you. Completely depends.
