So just be use it's old technology dose not mean it can't be used in new innovative ways. We see this with wheels every day this kite function vary differently as the sale gose as high as 2000 feet into the air were that one sail can pull that cargo ship. Air bus is in suport and is a major funder. It's seen working action right now and as had secsesfull proof of concepts however I don't think it's going to be effective as it's mich slower HOWEVER this same principle is being applied to wind generation hoisting the sail 2000-3000 ft meaning you don't need to wait for wind anymore to generate electricity.

The merchant marine abandoned wind power a long time ago as it is so unreliable. Looks and sounds good but ultimately just as reliable. We still use a phrase today 'in the doldrums' which refers to ships without motion as the wind was not strong enough for a long period.

It is never a good idea to abandon technological innovation if the prize is a reduction of thousand of tones of a particularly dirty fuel representing hundreds of thousands of Dollars cost to all of us. If it is worth it depends partly on how easily deployable etc it is. The Doldrums' is a geographical aria of Ocean and has been known for hundreds of years but so have the "Trade winds". Bare in mind these ships are crossing the oceans so a sail can be deployed practically all the way if you follow the trade winds.

Weight of the rope, ropes ? Friction on the ground fixation while pendulum ri le could cut the rope. Likely usual gulf stream ride, not wind stream. For small boats with little depth possible, but for line shipping not. Electricity : High Voltage to condensators, inverter self consumption into grid. While pulling in, lesser voltage needed, but more current, so the song stays the same.

What about the principle of a yoyo or jojo.yes the round toy with a rope used by children. That principle in the eolic energy could work with a kite. I'm talking about substitute the huge blades and use the principle of the Jojo. Let's say you have the tall post. Then you have something like a Jojo on top with something like a rope that makes it spin when pulled by the kite. Let's say the kite is pulled far from the post by the wind and reaches the top of the rope..it stops but what if the Jojo turns making the kite go from 12 to 6 then there is a situation of moving again. I think. I'm just saying.

You might be able to pivot the ship with a kite after like an hour but the amount of air molecules necessary to move that ship's huge amount of displaced water molecules out of the way is far too great. it is explained horribly here. The concept is this: 1. let kite be pulled upwards by wind and make energy by running the generator) 2. use control strings to fold the kite to a way smaller (less draggy) form 3. Pull it back down using energy (but using way less than generated before) 4. repeat

I do not believe this. An average VOC ship could carry 650 tons of goods and needed about 450 m2 of sail to move it at a slow pace. So you need at least 450.000 m2 of sail to move this 650.000 ton ship at a slow pace.
