Encounters of the Spooky Kind 鬼打鬼 is a 1980 Hong Kong martial arts comedy horror film directed by and starring Sammo Hung. Released as Spooky Encounters in the United States and also known as Close Encounters of the Spooky Kind. Encounters of the Spooky Kind was the progenitor of the jiangshi film genre (hopping Chinese vampires) and one of Hong Kong's first action horror comedies.
It would go on to birth the popular film series, Mr. Vampire, as well as inspire countless other film franchises, pop culture, and even anime. The film's influences can especially be seen in the manga works and character designs of Akira Toriyama (ie; Chiaotzu, Pilaf, Tao Pai Pai, etc).
I highly recommend checking out the first 3 Mr. Vampire films as well!! My favorite of those would probably be Mr. Vampire 2 - it's the only one set in modern day 1980's Hong Kong. Super sick.

Evil Dead came out the following year in 1981 (forgot to add the date over the clip of Ash). Not sure if Sam Raimi saw Spooky Encounters, but you can bet your ass that John Carpenter did 😎

I wanted to put in more scenes, but didn't want to spoil some of the best stuff. Lyoto was pretty freaked out by this movie when he was little too 😜

I remember getting a bootleg VHS of this at the Chicago comic con in the early 90s. Very good movie and made me an instant sammo hung fan

That's so awesome! Random VHS finds back in the day were the best!! I didn't discovered this film until it was released on DVD, and I spotted it at an FYE in their Martial Arts section (which maybe doesn't even exist?) sometime around 2008. I'd been a long time kung fu film fan, and was familiar with Mr. Vampire, and loved Sammo & Jackie movies, but somehow had never heard of Spooky Encounters. I was not mentally prepared for the insane badassary displayed in this masterpiece.

@@TOKYOTOYBANZAI yeah fye is still around. I was buying bootleg VHS in the late 80s early 90s and there were tons of sammo and Jackie movies like wheels on meals and lucky stars that became my favorites. Love comedic kung fu movies like drunken master and the like

@@bootleggodzilla1 That's awesome! I discovered Jackie Chan movies while on vacation in Myrtle Beach with my family back around 1990-1992. I turned on the tv at the hotel which had HBO and other cable channels that I had never seen. Police Story 2 was on, and I only got to see the playground fight scene. It was replaying in my head the entire trip, but I had no idea what the movie was called or who Jackie Chan was. Then a few years later Rumble in the Bronx made it's US debut, and I was never the same 😅 I love Jackie and Sammo's films from the 80's, but I do love some of the Shaw Bros stuff as well, especially Lau Kar Leung films - and of course, most of the films that Yuen Wo Ping directed (including Drunken Master).
