This 1974 propaganda film produced by Frederick F. Chen and directed by James Y. Liu seeks to showcase the development progress that the Republic of China has made since the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949. It shows several sights across the country, including the famous Palace Museum in Taipei. This is followed by an overview of progress in apartment, dam, highway, and ship construction as well as the production of export goods such as electronics, clothes, and agricultural products. It continuously emphasizes the high standard of living in the ROC through the availability of entertainment venues. It also focuses on the ROC’s role as a bastion of freedom in Asia by showing elections. This is despite the fact that in 1974 the ROC was under martial law and was being ruled by Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek of the Kuomintang. Taiwan’s 38-year-long period of consecutive martial law between 20 May 1949 and 14 July 1987 was qualified as "the longest imposition of martial law by a regime anywhere in the world" at that time. It has since been surpassed by Syria.

5:33 This music track, “Centrepoint” by Alan Hawkshaw, was also used in 1973’s “Progress Island USA”-Puerto Rico’s tourism short-which I first found through MST3K. I love that different commerce groups in different countries thought this track sold their identity well in the early 70s.

Despite how convenient how free the current Taiwan is. I'll still miss the prosperity and the simpleness of the old days which I didn't even live through.
