I have that set. The front axle connector is a way to connect 2 steering modules together (it has the same kind of connector in the back). The power brick has a similar axle connector on the front, this is the steering output.

The larger piece isn't a motor. The motor is contained in the receiver/battery box. They are directly connected in the finished model though.
