I use this lens on my D3s. I used this setup at the 2019 D23 event and it was so fun to take pictures with. It was heavy slinging this around for hours and around crowds but there is something about using this combination in this environment with the colors and distance I was shooting in within the huge halls. All in all it was a blast. Photographing with the D3s and this lens was fun to me and that's better than using mirrorless. The feeling of the mechanics of the mirror flipping and hearing it go, it talks to you and feels alive. With this lens it was art in motion and that's part of the experience while photographing, making it very fun.

The D3s and 28-300 were my first kit in 2010. I still have the lens but now have the D4s and D5. Gorgeous cameras. I also have a Z6II but I prefer to avoid it.

I have been shooting Nikon since the D200 and finally 'upgraded' to a D750 a couple of years ago and love it. However I needed a body for work and was given $300 to find one. I chose the D700 instantly and found a beat up example with 150k clicks on the shutter and it still performs outstandingly. Love it.

I have a D700, and the lens I leave on it most of the time is the older 28-105 f3.5-4.5 AF-D zoom. This lens is sharp, has little to no distortion, and has a useful macro feature. It renders colors beautifully. Best of all, you can buy a clean copy for $100 US. You don't get the long end like you do the 28-300, and you don't get VR, but it's a great option as well if you don't need those things.
@tomjodis86704 жыл бұрын
You asked what lenses I use on my D700 - here is my list: AF Nikkor 18-35mm 1:3.5-4.5D AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1:3.5-4.5G AF Nikkor 70-300mm 1:4.5-5.6D Since I do mostly landscape work now - I know these might not be the best lenses - but this is what I acquired as my kids played sports and I was using them to capture those moments. So the budget was the key component as to what I could purchase. Now that the kids are grown - I have grandkids to capture - but landscapes are still my focus so I would appreciate some feedback/advice as to what I might make as the next best lens to acquire for landscapes.

Hey Will. Another awesome video. I purchased the D700 after watching one of your earlier videos this year in like new condition. It is a beast. I’m really into this sort of look back at great older cameras and lenses, and hope you’ll think about doing more of these. We can pick these up used pretty cheap, they’re a lot of fun, and sometimes - like the D700 shooting portraits (same is probably true about Canon’s 12.8 MP original 5D) - there’s a use case where they’re still super relevant and fun to use today. I appreciate your insight into where some of these older bodies and lenses we might have lying around, or might be able to pick up pretty easy, can still stand out. Thanks for doing this one.

The micron size per pixel is the secret on nearly all cameras. The micron size here is 8 versus 4 on Z6/D750 etc. The 8 is a fat micron size which gathers a ton more natural tone/color etc. So it mimics film well due to how it gathers light in that micron size. Along with the algorithms help it's ability of overall capture. This my all time favorite digital Nikon.

I'm getting ready to buy the D700 just because it's such a great classic DSLR. I already have the 70-300mm 4.5-5.6 G lens so hope it performs as well as the 28-300mm.
@josephkraig3368Ай бұрын
I hate to tell you that the 70-300 will not perform nearly as well as the 28-300. The D700 was the first Nikon I ever used, a wonderful camera, basically nearly the same as a D3. I don't have a 700 but I have had several Nikons I pretty much liked all of them except for the D300. I thought the D800 with the higher megapixel count was better than the 700 ecept for low light, I think the D850 is the first camera I have had that matches the low light on the D700. i have used the 28-300 on my Z9 and it is very usable. It isn't as sharp as several other lenses but it is sharp enoungh in the center. When you are out in the field trying to get some good landscapes, that wide aoom range really is handy. It definitely has soem focus fall off on the edges but we shoot for the center and the edges are often meaningless. I usually keep the 28-300 on the Z7 and the 24-120 f:4 on the Z9. the Nikon 85:1.8 is perfect now for the D850 where it lives most of the time. I have a lot of money in lenses. Just had to have the trinity and now seldom use any of them. I like the Tamron 15-35 better than the Nikon 14-24 and whle i have kept the 70-200 because it's F2.8 but I never use it. That range is completely covered by the 28-300. I so enjoyed the D700 I have been thinking of putting one back in my case, avery fine camera indeed.

Great video Will. love seeing the clap bro, beginning and end! I remember when the D700 first came out. It quickly became a favorite camera for many Nikon pro photographers. It still has that same magic years later. You're absolutely right about the 28-300 lens. All of here in this community really appreciate your honest, unbiased content that you put out Will. Thanks for posting this vid, I've just bought a D700 with AI-s Lenses, 20, 28, 50P, 105 & 135, but i'm thinking of getting a zoom hence the search on you-tube. It sounds like a ideal landscape lens, where I only need to carry the (brick) D700, Gitzo and a single lens as a lightweight set up. Your thoughts ? Cheers Fon (Wales)

I use a 35mm 1.8 DX lens on my D700. I might get a true 35mm full frame lens, but I am not in a hurry because this DX lens does what I want it to do. There is only slight vignetting wide open that disappears with a small crop. For the price you cannot beat it. My two D700's are my main cameras and I love the 12MP sensor because it's ideal for shooting portraits without having to do too much skin smoothing and retouching. Really a sweet spot between color and sharpness. Never had a complaint from a client.

Can't afford another lens right now but when my d700 comes in a couple of weeks I might try my old 80-200 afs 2.8 d on it. I'll be interested to compare the images between the d700 and my d750...

You will be surprised! You will love your D700 much more than your D750 and you will not able to spot the reason. One of the reasons will be this number ..D700 (8.5 microns) Vs Nikon D750 (5.9 microns). The explanation (from the fb group Nikon D700/The Legend) "If you understand what exactly happens in a camera sensor, then you will fully realize the reason why many photographers like me went back from our shinning newer cameras to the Legendary Nikon D700. So...... We need to go deep in the technology of the sensors in order to understand how great the sensor of the D700 is. There are some factors that separate the D700 sensor of any other Nikon camera sensor, including the D850 and mirrorless Z6 and Z7 ones. About D700 colors: What makes the D700 so special about its color rendition (including excellent skin tones) is its unique CFA together with a unique algorithm which applied to its sensor.(different than the D3 and D3s ones) After the D700, Nikon altered CFA filters in order to boost high ISO performance and fit a bigger number of mpx in the same size sensor. But this required making the filter less discriminating. The color discrimination of the specific CFA allows the separation as a unique shade of any single basic color. Modern cameras lighter CFAs simply cluster similar shades of a single color. So, we are coming now to the most important off all the factors which called "Tonal gain" Tonal gain is what makes the D700 shots so special in dimensionality and depth. THE LOW PHOTOSITE DENSITY OF THE D700 SENSOR PRODUCES HIGH NATIVE GAIN WHICH PROVIDES EVERY SINGLE IMAGE WITH EXTRA DEPTH AND MICRO-CONTRAST, (3D Pop) The explanation: This is the D700's sensor pixel area (Photosite):71.70µm2 and this is-a an example-the the D850 sensor pixel area:18.88µm2 That means that the D700 sensor has 279% larger pixel area. So, let's see why this makes the difference in dimensionality and depth we see on many D700 shots. Light is a signal. This represents the tonality (colors, contrasts, details) of the subject. Its strength is defined by shutter speed and aperture. Pixel area (Photosite) is an antenna that receives the signal so it affects how much light per pixel can be gathered. The larger it is, the more light can be collected by a single pixel. BUT, The size of the photosite defines its native signal gain as well. For a camera to record the maximum amount of micro-contrast and depth off a good lens, it requires low photosite density for higher native gain. Tonal gain is NOT a dynamic range. The higher the native gain, the bigger is the gap between the peak of the gain and the noise floor over the same signal.- Photosites exist at various densities within the size of the camera sensor. Higher megapixel sensors have a higher density and lower native gain. The ISO defines the applied gain on the photosite so that it can receive a weaker signal. Increasing the gain raises the noise floor. The Analog to Digital Converter (A/D converter) converts the gained signal into digital information. The quality of the conversion is influenced by Bit Depth. The Signal to Noise Ratio firmware (SNR) separates the signal (the detail) from the noise (the noise) right before making the RAW file. If the converted gain is low, it will have a harder time figuring out the difference, therefore removing more signal. So the quality of the TONAL GAIN matters greatly final image-making. The current ideal photosite density is 12mp for the size of a full-frame sensor (Nikon D700 - 8.5 µm is ideal) This is a short list with some full-frame cameras and their pixel pitch. Full Frame Sensors Cameras Nikon D750 (5.9 microns) - 2014 14 bit Canon 6D (6.5 microns) - 2012 - 14 bit Canon 1Dx (6.9 microns) - 2011 14 bit Canon 5Dii (6.4 microns) - 2008 14 bit Nikon D3/D3s/D700 (8.5 microns) - 2008 - 14bit Canon 5D (8.1 microns) - 2005 - 12 bit This link compares the pixel pitch of various cameras

I picked up one at a camera store in San Francisco last October. It is my go to lens for a Nikon d800. I stick with the 28 to 300mm zoom and run it like a stolen car. First rule is to keep it on you as much as possible for a day. I paid 550 dollars for an excellent condition lens.

Recently I bought a D3 which I was hoping it would be a decent camera. Oh how wrong was I.. It is incredible, from build quality to image quality. It is absolutely superb and I could not be happier. I believe the sensor more or less is the same as the D700 so I can imagine the quality of it. I really enjoy the 50mm 1.4 as a walk around lens. I realise that the D3 isn't exactly a good walk around camera :D

For work, I bought a D3 and a D700 in 2008-2009 and the only odd thing is that the D700 has a 95% viewfinder while the D3 VF is 100%. Which is not a problem. My walk-around was and is the Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8. But I’m still breaking myself in to the Z7.

Ken Konard that’s my only gripe with the d700, I’m so used to full coverage with the Z6. How are you liking the Z7?
@lescobrandon30475 жыл бұрын
The Monochrome Memoirs - The Z7 has been used for just about every kind of shooting I do. This past summer I used the FTZ and various telephoto lenses to shoot the Jones Beach NY air show and the results were mind blowing. When it gets warmer, I’ll be trying that getup for birding. If I ever went nuts and went back to weddings, I’d dust off the D3 and D700 because of the colors.

28-300 is one of the most underrated Nikkor lens ever... actually Nikon Marketing somehow has positioned it very low right from the beginning ! Tried it again on my Z6 recently (since there is no Z equivalent) and i did end up with enjoyable images ! And no one told me "hey you've been probably using a low quality lens on those ones !!" :)

I now use a Sony A9 & A7Riv for my serious/professional work. I sold all my Nikon bodies including D300 & D810, along with all my pro glass. But I could not sell my D700, too attached to it's feel in the hand, robustness and quality. I still use it with the 50mm f/1.8G and 24-120mm f/4G for pleasure shoots and monochromatic work in 2024.

Regarding the D700's "NC81338L" sensor (from Matsushita, if my sources are correct), the Nikon D3 (which came out a year before the D700) has the same sensor, but Nikon's color science renders a tiny bit different on the D700. Of the two, the D700 jpegs are the nicest, but the D3 is no slouch either 😊

Hi Will, great video! I have never bought a super zoom lens. But after watching your video, it could be a good option if you want to travel light. Most of the time, I have with me two cameras: one Z7 and one Z6. And on each camera, I mount a prime: one wide angle lens (24 or 35 mm) and one portrait lens (50 or 85 mm). When I take a trip somewhere, I generally use the Nikkor Z 24-70 mm f/2.8 S: it’s versatile and at the same time I can benefit from the f/2.8 aperture. By the way, the Nikkor Z 24-70 mm f/2.8 S is such an amazing lens. So sharp, so quick to focus and very lightweight! These Z lenses are so good!!!
