So much for the mega expensive Recon 40. The Sporty 40 and a wire bypass with the PowerPole connectors saves a TON of money. Great video.

The coil is still “in the system” electrically. Correct? It’s now just in parallel. Does this have an effect on the antenna’s impedance? Compared with not having the coil connected at all.
@georgeetherege8347
@georgeetherege8347 Ай бұрын
That’s correct, strictly speaking. As the length of the wire used to “short” the coil approaches 10% of the wavelength, the difference in RF voltage from one end to the other (due to the current distribution over the entire antenna) can no longer be ignored. Around 10 % of wavelength and certainly if the wire length is close to 5% or smaller, we treat the wire as just that-a wire-like in a DC circuit. Also ignoring loss due to wire resistance, we say the voltage is the same over its entire length. The coil is shorted out. At 10 meters wavelength, 10% is one meter-5% is 50 cm, or about 20 inches. The piece of wire shorting this coil makes it invisible electrically and effectively not there.

Hey Michael, another great antenna mod/improvement. If I had a Wolf River Coil, I would definitely do this. I may end up with one yet. I need to get a good multiband portable antenna for POTA. I haven't dialed it in yet if I should get the Buddistick Pro, or the Wolf River Coil or a mast and an EFHW. From all the reviews that I have seen I don't think either one of the options would be a wrong choice. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. 73
@truckinguy92
@truckinguy92 Жыл бұрын
It depends on what you really want to accomplish. The BuddiStick Pro is good and it works but it’s finicky to tune with an elevated radial. I’ve not used the WRC but I haven’t heard a bad thing about them. With both of these choices retuning is required to change bands. I feel the BuddiStick is the more compact choice. The 49:1 EFHW works great as well and if it’s cut for 40m it also gives you 20,15, & 10m without needing to retune. Opinions on it are mixed depending on who you talk to. Vertical antennas like others have said are more DX oriented. Good luck on your choice, there’s just way too many.
@KB9VBRAntennas
@KB9VBRAntennas Жыл бұрын
Any of the three are good choices and have their positives and negatives. I usually carry two antenna types into the field: a self supporting vertical and a wire antenna. You never know what situation you will be presented with. Trees or space may not be an option for a wire antenna or you have to hike into where you want to operate and a vertical is too much bulk. It's good to have options, especially if you are traveling any distance to activate a park.

A switch should work. Depending on what power level you transmit on, the voltages present may be more than the switch's capability, so be sure it is properly rated.
