@@Alice-he2zh H. P. Lovecraft also made a tribute to the cat by giving its name to the cat in the 1923 short story The Rats in the Walls.[2] The cat's name would be changed to "Blackie" or "Black Tom" in some of the later reprints of the story. During American horror fiction writer Howard Phillips Lovecraft's childhood, his family owned several cats.[1] The oldest of the cats, named Nigger-Man, which the family likely acquired and named in 1899, disappeared in 1904 when Lovecraft was 14 years old. In his correspondence, H. P. Lovecraft reminisces about the cat in several of his letters (extracts shown below). The name of the cat seen to be a dark breed of Ragdoll, "Nigger-Man", has often been cited in discussions of Lovecraft's racial attitudes. Lovecraft owned a cat by that name until 1904. The cat had likely been given its name when Lovecraft was about age nine.

Lovecraft fiction has so much untapped potential it's a shame people only have a surface level idea of the Cthulhu Mythos. Personally, I think you can make an amazing manga off the dreamlands as most of the God characters are byproducts of the collective unconscious and thus are fueled on belief.

There is a manga called Ghost Reaper Girl whose characters are based on Lovecraftian lore. But that's about all there is that is has in common with Lovecraft, as the story and themes aren't Lovecraftian at all. Still fun to see stuff like Nyarlathotep being depicted as a hot gyaru waifu. Yay my favorite youtuber getting into my 2nd favorite genre. This is a great place to start with Lovecraft and I think "At the Mountains of Madness" is one of my favorites. this really did its job as an adaptation, the art also really helps build the atmosphere as well as making it easier to read and understand. I can understand what you mean when you say it was a bit exposition dumpy but I think that is more so a result of this being a manga but you do get used to it when reading Lovecraft. If you want more Lovecraft suggestions I think that, "The Whisperer in darkness" is a good option. "It is absolutely necessary, for the peace and safety of mankind, that some of earth’s dark, dead corners and unplumbed depths be let alone; lest sleeping abnormalities wake to resurgent life, and blasphemously surviving nightmares squirm and splash out of their black lairs to newer and wider conquests.”- At the Mountains of Madness H.P. I find it interesting to have a manga adaptation of Lovecraft's stories. Only because reading them and having your brain conjure the visuals adds to the horror. Like for instance that panel of the old ones, just being able to give them form makes them more understandable. By far my favorite aspect of the old gods is just the madness that is azathoth. The entirety of the universe is azathoths dream, deities play music around him constantly to keep him lulled into a slumber so as to prevent him from waking and the entire universe dissipating. That kind of cosmic horror very clearly comes from an understanding of how small our place in the universe is. All life on earth could easily be snuffed out by a bit of cosmic space debris, the fact there is life here in the first place is a miracle as we are ostensibly a dust particle in space terms. It is literally a Horton hears a who situation.

Yeah, if you got the sense that part of the graphic novel was an exposition dump, much of the same happened in the source material. The Mountains of Madness was one of his longest stories, and for me I get a sense of fatigue going through them. his writing is something of an acquired taste, but thankfully most of his body of work is made up of shorter stories to cut your teeth on. Lovecraft's horror rings so close to home for Japanese writers and artists, because they get having their greatest fears manifesting as something that's completely out of their control. I know you've read Junji Ito's work, and basically every story he writes is about humans, the strongest and most advanced lifeform on this planet, getting redpilled on how tenuous and fleeting their control actually is of this planet, and how limited our understanding is of the surrounding universe. Like, just imagine for a moment: even with all the advancements NASA has made, we can't even accurately monitor objects that are between us and the sun. The light and radiation mess with our instruments too much. As such, we're frequently confronted with civilization-threatening objects that just barely brush by our gravitational well, or even enter our atmosphere, and we have zero time to prepare or even tell others about it. On the flip side, there's an unofficial planet on the edge of our solar system, known only as Planet X, cause scientists can't come to a consensus on whether it actually exists or not. Lovecraft's horror isn't about what Man knows, but rather getting a glimpse of what we don't know, and running for his life once he gets the tiniest understanding of that newfound wisdom.

I thought you'd be a big Lovecraft fan and had read most of his works. I'm happy you're digging his work! I haven't read Mountains of Madness yet but the others are bangers too. Per your conclusion about what Lovecraft aims for, that's one half of it. Cthulu, The Colour from Outer Space, Mountains of Madness, they do that, but there's another half that I like a lot better. Simply Knowing is a Curse. Idk if it counts as "The Curse of Knowledge" but in both Pickman's Model and the Music of Erik Zahn the main character wishes they never saw or knew what they saw or knew. It messes with their head how the person they met is..."co-existing" so to speak with these horrors.

It's fascinating how much influence Lovecraft's works have had, given that he pretty much failed to have any success during his life. Some of the biggest game franchises have references to the mythos or take direct inspiration from it such as the Dead Space series, the Elder Scrolls series, the Soulsborne games and even the mobile game Fate Grand Order has it sprinkled throughout. Then you have the survival horror genre, whose foundations were laid by the first Alone in the Dark game which was very Lovecraft heavy and that doesn't even get into movies and books.

OH SWEET SOLOMON KANE, THAT ARTWORK!!! It's like Manga artstylings combined with Pulp novel illustrations, and it's amazing! Plus, if you are a Berserk fan and the Godhand are an interesting concept, then going with the works of Lovecraft or Howard is pretty much the way to go if you're looking for good Western material. Miura obviously had a love for Eldritch Horror and things beyond human comprehension, but I don't know if he read Robert E Howard's works or saw any Lovecraft films, but he did have similar ideas to them (maybe it's a Stabd Alone complex or something, idk.) Basically, if you liked the seemingly incomprehensible nature of the Apostles or the Idea of Evil, Howie's got you covered with literally two decades worth of material.

You hit the notion cosmic horror is trying to convey spot on. Nice job. Lovecraft was probably what drove me Nihilism, as once you look at the universal picture, you realize your insignificance. Also your take on our need for freedom ironically being that we have more control on parts of our lives reminded me of Thou's song Free Will. Here; Open your eyes and exalt--Exalt! In this fragile world, in this knowing flesh, in this very moment. We have forsaken the delusions of Comprehension as we are born into the certainty of the Sensual. We are the stone that starts the avalanche. We are the cough that spreads the plague. We are the spark that lights the inferno. Relinquish those wretched controls of knowledge and experience, those conditions which hinder desire's progress. Cut away esoteric corruption and seek unfettered fulfillment. In defiance of the sages. In defiance of the intelligentsia. Useless philosophy, theory, and poetry must be heaped upon the cairn. See them consumed in Action--sweet, reckless Action. Join our sad tears and dance on the blackened bones of gods. Beyond the shadow of the citadel, there is no such thing as time, there is no such thing as negation. There is only this tangible, perceptible world. There is only this moment, this very moment. Following up, I'm glad more people are enjoying Gou Tanabe's H.P Lovecraft adaptations. They're some incredible works of art, well worth the read.

You didn't touch on this part in the review, but near the end when Dyer and Danforth are flying the plane and then Danforth sees something in the mountains and starts screaming, what exactly it was that he saw was later explained by Lovecraft in a letter to his friend: "What the thing was supposed to be, of course, was a region containing vestiges of some utterly primal cosmic force or process ruling or occupying the earth (among other planets) even before its solidification, & upheaved from the sea-bottom when the great Antarctic land mass arose. Lack of interest in the world beyond the inner mountains would account of its non-reconquest of the sphere. But then again, there may have been no such thing! Those Others may well have had their superstitions -- & of course Danforth was strangely read, nervously organised, & fresh from a terrific shock.... Anyhow, what I did set down was a sort of weak compromise betwist the two ways I vaguely & ineffectively thought it ought to be." Lovecraft himself actually was not satisfied with how he handled the ending, and considered writing either a sequel or an expansion of the original story that would focus on the thing that Danforth saw, but of course neither of those ever ended up happening, because 1) At the Mountains of Madness was recieved very poorly when it released and essentially ended Lovecraft's career (despite the fact that these days it's one of his most popular works), and 2) Lovecraft fell into deep depression and then passed away just a year after ATMOM was published. By the way, Gou Tanabe has a bunch of other Lovecraft manga adaptations, you should check them out when you get a chance. Tanabe's art is a perfect match for Lovecraft's fiction.

The ancients are some of the most tragic characters H.P Lovecraft invented. Imagine waking up after millions of years only to discover that everyone you knew, your world and your entire civilisation are just gone. In their perspective they just fell asleep out of nowere only to wake up and see that a bunch of alien creatures kidnapped them and KILLED some of their own. Their act of aggression was a primal reaction to what they saw as a threat, especially because of those darn dogs. They were just as scared and confused as the humans in the story, they are not even evil, they are morally like us. The ancients are some of the most human-like creatures in the mythos, in the right circumstance maybe the human explorers might have been able to comunicate with them peacefully as equals. But now, as the shoggoth slaughtered all of them, their kind is no more, and their civilisation, despite all their strugles to survive and their victories, Is gone forever.

Damn, Lovecraft is my favourite author ever. I don't see his works as horror tho; for me, "cosmic horror" has always been dark fantasy, or "cosmic fantasy" since cosmic horror is a product of its time and i find it really hard to believe that I'm our age, in this part of the world (The Americas) anyone really feels fear because of his stories, since we've very well accepted there are aliens far more advanced than us. But nonetheless, his entire library is phenomenal, the man was really gifted with an amazing imagination.

Lovecraftian horror is a subgenre of horror fiction that emphasizes the cosmic horror of the unknown more than gore or other elements of shock. It is named after American author H.P. Lovecraft (1890-1937). His work emphasizes a philosophy of cosmicism, the idea that the reality underlying the veneer of normality is so alien that glimpsing it would be harmful to our fragile human minds. We as human beings like to think we can know or understand anything. Cosmic horror is experienced when we are confronted by phenomena that are beyond our comprehension and also when we are made to become aware of the fact that we are alone in a vast, often malignant cosmos. It's a very nihilistic idea, but also what makes it scary.

I think the perfect summary of Lovecraft's work, and cosmic horror in general can be found in the first paragraph of the Call of Cthulhu. "The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the deadly light into the peace and safety of a new dark age." In essence, we are staggeringly insignificant things that believe the universe revolves around us, and when we truly test that premise, we are quickly and mercilessly put in our place.

I heard about this Manga years ago and forgot about it. I read the original story a long time ago and I really liked it, how it describes the main characters losing their minds. Now that I began reading Manga its so cool these two are connected. I actually originally found Lovecraft through games, specifically a GameCube only game called "Eternal Darkness", and later PC games like the Penumbra trilogy. Lovecraft is really a big influence on Horror and media in general. Even Arkham Asylum from Batman is named after a town in the Lovecraft Mythology. Should get a copy of this sometime to read to my kids XD

Check out john carpenter's "The Thing" since you enjoyed this story. It's VERY similar yet really different. It's fantastic at building suspense and has a vast sorta helpless cosmic horror aspect to it

I would like to recommend your lord of mysteries. It's about our main character who is suddenly in a world where beyonders exist. (They use potions to level up) but its way tooo deeper. And the power system whole shit the best ever. There are 22 pathways and each have a true god and every pathway have 9 parts means 22×9=idk levels. With each having unique powers. For example would be a random power of black emperor pathway. Distortion - imagine you are a team assualting a man and you say "spread out and meet me at the point" the enemy can distort it into "spread out and meet me outside" and no one would realise. It's just so good. My favourite power is error pathway. To steal - the person can see your thoughts snd steal them. Your moves and use them. Steal your powers. It's just so overpowered and each pathway is perfectly balanced. It's just so well plotted I'd say as good as one piece when it comes to foreshadowing

I believe that the relationship between space terror being represented as a submarine terror is a great fit, it is based on the same fear of the unknown, the fear that existed beyond the mapped areas in the ocean and now on the space frontier.

Little bit off-topic but have you watched the The First Slam Dunk Movie trailers and what do you think about them. In my opinion I get the animation style and i like it its really realistic basketball movement and also it seems like they want to be closer to Inoue's newer illustration books about Slam Dunk those from 2018 i think.

Of HP Lovecraft's inner circle of friends, I think that Clark Ashton Smith is a very good author with a very interesting writing style, has interesting fantasy stories, scifi, horror, and others. I would recommend people read some of his stuff or listen to the audiobook (which can be found on youtube)

I love H.P. Lovecraft's writing and obviously the cosmic horror has been such a big inspiration for writers all over the world. H.P. Lovecraft himself was a unremarkable person, he just like many other famous dark writers only became famous many years after his death. I disagree with his racist views and everyone should as well. But for a man to be as racial as he was his writing always showed that hunamity no matter your race, creed and/or gender we mean nothing in the grand scale of the universe. And that is what I love about the Lovecraftian genre.
