In case someone's wondering, Phoenix' big hammer is a reference to Marvel vs. Capcom, where one of his supers, "Order In The Court!", summons the Judge to smack his gavel onto the stage. It's a fairly odd move, Phoenix can actually hit himself and his teammates with it (though it only knocks you down without dealing damage), but it also has the property of erasing the hitbox of any projectile currently on the screen. Lythero has a wonderful clip where he uses that to power-walk through laserbeams.

And that is a reference to a nightmare Phoenix had in Justice for All.

Since you guys are new to Rivals, my best piece of advice is that the basic gameplay is basically like Smash Bros., but you don't have shielding, ledges, or grabs. However, you can wall jump after using your up special and use it once more. Granted, Workshop Characters are way more complicated and individually complex, but with enough practice, it'll basically feel like a different Smash Bros.
