As a audio engineer and mixing engineer and listening to this on headphones and monitors I’d take the Soyuz hands down! @@EdwardSmithMusicI thought that the rode nt1 was the game changer? If ur gonna make sponsored videos I’ll still chime in for noobs and say that even with a Neumann tlm103 I preferred using a dynamic mic (se v7) and using free plugins (analog obsession). Every mic is unique. Everyone needs to remember your voice has its own frequency response and you can tailor mics to fit your voice. Additionally this mic is being run through hardware prolly equal to the price of the mic or more and that also contributes to the sound.

Still reviewers make the basic mistake of having the shootout be done via different takes. If youre comparing mics like this, details like ppl singing identically for both mics, matter. A lot. How hard is it to do a multitrack recording where both mics capsules are as colose to each other, as they can. Issue is, no matter how good the singer, the details of the tone of the voice will change from one take to another. Tho, in some ways, the difference in preamp and converter, might colour it a bit too, its way less than the performance colouring the sound.
@henrikpetersson3463 Жыл бұрын
I used to think that way too, but from doing shootouts myself over the years I've changed my mind on that. A lot of times mics don't perform their best at the same distance or angle, or with the same preamp and processing. And also, the sound of a microphone often affects how the vocalist is performing. I think these are important factors. So honestly I think that you should try to get the best out of each microphone and then compare the results. Yes, it's less of a scientific comparison that way, but after all these are creative tools, not measurement instruments. Also, Edward is very consistent in his vocals. So when you do a switch during the song like in this video it's not really of much relevance if it's different takes. The tone could be more different between two phrases than between two takes.
@rist98 Жыл бұрын
@@henrikpetersson3463 Hm. Interesting point. I guess I generally have a more objective kind of approach to things. Yes, tone varies between phrases too, hence why I prefer if the reviewer provides the raw tracks for comparison.

Almost identical, except for one thing. the U87 had a more annoying mid range that didn't sound like it was part of the rest of the mic's sound. the Soyuz had smoothness and glued everything together. the lows, the mids, highs, every frequency range sounded perfectly balanced and together. U87 is great but certain frequencies stick out unnaturally.

That 017 sounds great on your voice. Kind of an Adele low end thing going on. Nice and full. In my experience, my 017 FET can be sibilant which is the only drawback. I often will remark on the wonderful creamy texture the mix has when I record the first tracks of any session.
@EandVEntertainment Жыл бұрын
You'll find the U87ai to be more versatile. Both are very nice. The Soyuz has a sweeter sound, if that makes sense. Wait to you get into high end tube mics. That's when the U87ai really starts to feel like the workhorse it is, and not the premium mic many people are lead to believe it is. Both the Soyuz and U87ai shine through really good preamps too. Looks like you're on the Apollo. Check out some of the Unison preamps if you haven't already.
