Hello Sam, Thanks very much for your videos mate. A real pleasure to listen to all the details that you have covered, and explained, and of course the footage that you have shared. Just wondering, have you managed to get in contact with Tom Davies at all? I believe Tom Davies was one of the first Pioneering Landy owners to put the 5.9 Cummins in a few years back. He has some interested detailed videos of his rig. Cheers, from Townsville, Australia. Matthew

Hi Matthew, thanks for the comment. Yes I know Tom quite well, he lives nearby to where I went to University, and I actually bought some of my first conversion parts from him way back in 2013/14. I've been involved with the Cummins LR scene from near the very start thanks to my Uni mate Nick who did the first conversion into a 90 and runs the Cummins Land Rover Group on Facebook. All the best to OZ from Galway Ireland!

@SamsMotors

Hey Dave, cheers! At the moment, the compressor is just running the air assisted clutch. However the 130 also has an ARB air locker in the rear diff, which will be plumbed into the air system when I get around to it. It could also run a tyre inflator or any other smallish air tools you wanted!

Assuming that to be the B Series 5.9 litre Cummins as removed from a Case Maxxum tractor or a 360 excavator, what are its maximum revs. In most industrial applications they are rated to 2200 rpm and governed to no more than 2400 no load. This would be very restrictive through a five speed Land Rover manual gearbox it seems to me, compared to LR engines that are generally rated to 4000rpm.
@SamsMotors
@SamsMotors Жыл бұрын
Yes 5.9 6BT. It's currently governed at 2400rpm but I have a replacement Bosch spring for the pump that will take it up to 3200rpm. It's not a Land Rover box - it's a ZF S5-42 from a DAF, which is a lot stronger than any LR box but is geared fairly similarly. The transfer box is running an increased output ratio of 1:1 (from original of 1.4:1) so she cruises fairly nicely at 65mph, which is plenty in an old Landy. Ideally it would have the 0.9 gearset which would drop the cruising revs down a bit, but it's perfectly useable as it is. Cheers for the comments!

Absolutely basic mistake/balls-up. I worked at a tractor main franchised dealer for ten years and one of the annual rituals was to go around all hundred or so used tractors every November checking that they all had antifreeze ration correct in the coolant. Also the crop sprayers and anything else that might have water inside of housings. The sprayers were nominally empty but needed antifreeze coolant sent through all liquid pipes and nozzles. It took a day or so for every 25 units considering that some would need draining, refilling and run a while to circulate coolant through all systems including the cab heating circuit.
@SamsMotors

Yes - very basic. I was working on the cooling system earlier in the year and totally forgot that I had filled up with water for testing. Ah well, shit happens, won't do it again!

@SamsMotors Жыл бұрын
Yeah - they’re sometimes called freeze plugs as that’s partially their function to allow expansion to happen without damage. It’s actually a 5.9 Cummins 6BT, and it’s around 20 years old so not that modern now - though it’s more modern than the Land Rover it’s in!

If you’ve ever seen a Defender 110/130 chassis, you’ll see that they’re hugely strong and over engineered - at least as strong as the Dodge Ram frames in the US which are only a “C” section as opposed to fully enclosed box on the Landy.
