So the reason they had Josh and Cher be ex-step siblings is because this is an adaption of the classic Jane Austen book “Emma”. In the book Josh’s character is a family friend who is distantly related to Emma’s family and stays with them in the house, so this was the modern version of being somewhat related but trying not to be too creepy about it, and still have Josh be a constant presence in the house.

I don’t know why so many people I’ve seen react to this movie thinks Josh and Cher are weird as a couple. They make it clear so many times that not only are they not related, but they weren’t even raised as siblings. Their parents were married for like two years several years before this movie even happened. The only reason Josh still hangs around with Cher’s dad is because he was a lot of help to Josh. I don’t find the fact they got together weird at all.

@Ivy94F2 жыл бұрын
There’s not even a hint of an actual sibling relationship because they were never raised together. Besides, NOBODY uses the term ex-step anything because it just isn’t a thing. Its like when I used to use the term cousin-in-law for some of my family members who were close but not actually related to me in any way except for the fact that two people in our extended family got married. That’s it. It just makes no sense to ‘cringe’ at two people who were never actually family in any real sense.

Exactly! I don't know why people get so hung up on the ex-stepbrother thing. I mean, yeah, it's unconventional, but there's nothing inherently wrong with it. If they actually grew up together as stepbrother & stepsister, then it would be gross. But the movie makes it a point to say that her dad & his mom were only married for a very short period of time & split up five years ago. So they presumably spent very little time around each other. It seems like Josh kept in touch with her dad some after the divorce, but really only started coming around a lot recently because he's in college now & wants to be a lawyer, so he's learning the ropes from Mel.

Christian's fashion, speech, and personality is based off of 1940s-1960s East Coast tough guy personas. That's why Cher's father asks Christian if he thinks the death of Sammy Davis, Jr left an opening in The Rat Pack -- which included Davis, Frank Sinatra, and a couple other people who were the epitome of that style and vibe during that era. Kinda like Goodfellas, but in the entertainment industry instead of the mob (though Sinatra was believed to have mob ties. There's even a character based on him in The Godfather)

You guys are getting creeped out for no reason over Josh and Cher. Their parents were married for a minute, as they make pretty clear in the movie. There's no biological connection and they weren't raised together; probably didn't even share the same house for any real length of time - there's no real brother/sister connection here. This is not some creepy, incestuous love story, so lighten up!

people are allowed to have different interpretations and reactions to things. something weird to you may not ring any bells to other people.

To me, since they were barely step-siblings only for a brief time, the weirder part is their age gap. She's 15 and he's in college so he's at least 18, maybe more and despite it only being 3 years, their mindsets and maturity would be so different IRL

16 not 15, not that weird to me! 18 is not that far away!
@katwebbxo2 жыл бұрын
@@QueenK88 15 lol. She asks Tai when her birthday is and she said she'll be 16 in May and Cher responds hers is in April. So she's 15 for most of the movie.

@claireice Oh I agree. It's not that bad. I never thought much about it growing up or rewatching the movie over the years. But I can understand why some people would find it weird.

My fiancé and I are 9 years apart. I am 21 and he is 30. We got together when I was 17 a few months before I turned eighteen. We’ve been together for 4 years. He has been married before but I am the longest relationship he’s ever had and healthiest one he said

You guys have to understand that they were never raised as actual siblings. Their parents were married for like two years when they were kids they barely knew each other. yeah its a little strange but I don't think its that far out there.

Lol, I guess y’all are too young to get the Kato reference. Cher referred to Josh as Kato because he’s a houseguest and Kato Kaelin was famous for living in the guest house of Nicole Brown Simpson during the OJ Simpson murders.

Lol the first touchscreen computer was actually the HP-150, released in 1983. Cher’s 1994 closet just helped to start throwing this type of technology into the mind of people. 😉

@@felipegomes610 Kind of like the fax machine scene in Die Hard 2. They existed, but they weren’t being used enough for the masses to know what it was or what it actually did yet. I still remember the ooohs and aaaahs during that scene when it was shown how a fax machine worked.
