Hi, Quick correction. The "SAS Operators" are actually a Detachment of the FRU. I know exactly where that photo was taken - that base has gone now. We had 53's at all Dets with sliding stocks & iron sights, both of which we loved. We mostly used them on ops that had the chance of moving through rural areas as opposed to urban, where MP5K's were usually the weapon of choice. Always with our trusty Browning Mk 2 Hi Power as a PPW as well though. Nice review of an old friend - Thanks Mike 👍

I served 2 tours in Northern Ireland during Banner - South Armagh and Londonderry; the uniform of all the 'sneaky beakies' who would show up, in the towers or the outstations, was typically a windproof smock worn over jeans, long hair... and an HK53! Ah, fond memories! When my old dept put together a SWAT team way back around 2001, we got guns from Colt and H&K to T&E. From H&K we had MP5s, etc, but they also sent us one H&K 53. I LOVED that thing! It was controllable, fed flawlessly, and was easy to have ready to go when bailing out of a Crown Vic (dating myself there). I mean sure, ballistics suffered but a test we did of short barreled 5.56 guns years later, showed they still packed enough punch (and if the first round isn't enough, you have plenty more). Alas, all of H&K's guns were marked for T&E only and they wanted them back. They would not budge on a price and got kind of snippy about it. Colt, on the other hand, gave us the guns they sent at about half off. We got about 3 for one by going with Colt (and I claimed a 635 and later an M4). But I sure did love that 53!

HK did make a version of the HK33 that took STANAG mags - the G41. It also had a 4 position selector (Safe, semi, burst, full auto). True to form, HK killed any interest in the rifle by pricing it at several times the cost of similar guns.

Carried one of these periodically in the late 1990s on the SWAT team I was on. The thought was having a couple of these to defeat body armor , while keeping the same manual of arms as the MP5, would be a good idea. It wasn’t a very good idea. These things barked like nothing else I’ve ever shot. Fun. Not too practical though. An unintended consequence - it was actually a great training tool to really learn good weapon control and stance. If you could manage one of these going back to the mp5 was like shooting a BB gun

Served in the Greek Army in 2009, and the rifles I used there were the G3A3 (at basic training camp) and the HK11 (later when I got my specialization). The G3 was weighting in at about 3.7kg, whereas the HK11 being the behemoth that it is, was close to 8kg!! And I had to run and dive behind cover and brumbles, through windows into buildings etc with that HK11. And like you said, both had almost all the blueing gone off because of the decades of careless soldiers dropping them and being rough with them, but they did shoot true, and very rarely malfunctioned. - Also another thing to note: Because I was also an armored personnel carrier driver, I got to use Colt M1911 (since the driver area doesn't have space for a rifle). Man, that Colt, what a piece of kit that was!! It was older than I am (the particular one issued to me was made in 1982), and like I said, countless of uncaring hands later, that thing would shoot right on target, and never EVER jammed!! A true testament to American ingenuity and quality of build in my eyes!!!

Here's the big issue, and why no STANAG HK roller gun is particularly reliable, except for the godawful G41 ("Frankenstein's rifle"). ARs have cartridge guides built into the upper/chamber area, while STANAG mags are double presentation and feed straight. HK53s do not have these guides, and their mag is tapered towards the front and top, to provide a somewhat uniform feed position. To get a STANAG magazine to work well in a 33/53 type design, it will need a custom feed tower/insert. Even then, rounds will still occasionally get jammed into the trunion instead of the chamber. This causes not only stoppages, but also results in bullet setback. Mean if/when a user tries to just reload/rechamber that round, it's going to produce higher pressures than intended. Ultimately, a STANAG compatible 33/53 isn't going to be a reliable fighting weapon. Ask yourself this; "if it was really *_that_* easy, then why would HK waste so much time/money on completely redesigning the gun into the G41?"

What really killed this weapon was the Picatinny rail. and that the HK was not attuned to going that direction because of the Charging Handle configuration. It could not resurge since we are seeing RedDot Thermal Hybrid devices which do away with the need for anything but a Flashlight beyond the Receiver area above the action. And also, the resurgence of High Sighting for Gas Masks makes the DRL system head back up to market resurgence.
@DaleErnieMichael
@DaleErnieMichael 10 ай бұрын
19:30 The reason the charging handle folds on rifle caliber HK's isn't to keep them from getting bumped, it's because they're built in levers that cam the bolt carrier back with mechanical advantage. If they were straight like an MP5 you'd need to crack them with a hammer to get the bolt to unlock, the guns work entirely on the principles of mechanical advantage and leverage which you need to overcome the same way the rounds do to get the action to cycle. It's basically like a teeter totter with one short side and a fat kid sitting on the long side, the bullet's gotta lift the fat kid by pushing down on the short side and you're just lifting him by his belt, both are a workout but one of them needs the Hulk on TRT to get done.

I have 2 HK93 in my collection. In the mid 1980's. FFL couldn't get rid of them. Why I bought 2 at the time. Mine has a longer barrel (16") and a normal stock on it. I can't recall what I paid for them. But at auction I could easily get over $5K for each. Mine are all HK OEM parts and wasn't from a builder kit. I also have a bunch of FN-FNC and one is select fire. I have a really extensive collection. And I would say that the end of the 70's to the end of the 80's was the best time to purchase firearms. No background check. You could purchase select fire....though you had to register a select fire or select fire sear. You could purchase and walk out of FFL that day. FFL would register said firearm for you. I still have a Glock 17 Gen1 and Gen in the original tupperware box. The Gen1 has never been opened yet.

@@Idratherbeonvacation BS background was in 1992 and passed as the Brady Bill or something like that. And yes any select fire, short barrel, etc. was registered. But you didn't go thru these hoops to get it. Your FFL filled out a simple form for you and you walked out the door. All these gun cases going to the supreme court could easily be resolved. If the jurist simply repealed the 1968 GCA. And said it was unconstitutional. Then most issues would be revolved...i.e., no more infringements. Currently the courts via Bruen, Heller, McDonald are giving us our rights back. Which shouldn't have been taken in the first place.
