Dont worry about doing the live version for part 2 (watch the lyric version yourself) he released part 2 during covid when UK was on lockdown so it just wasn't possible to have him and his friends come together to make a full live version as they normally would, the beach one was a sort of preview to try promote the full lyric video as I understand.

there is no greater storytelling than Ren's "The Tale of Jenny and Skreetch" full version. It is truly Shakesperean in it's lyrics, visuals and scope. Absolutely tragic and epic. In my almost 60 years I don't think I've ever heard/seen anything quite like it

Isaac, I just listened to your take on the Money Game trilogy, and @blairkimberlin3447 above suggested what I wanted to say. You must, must do the Jenny and Screech (and Violet) trilogy: "the Tales." It is dark, tragic, and absolutely brilliant in the storytelling (Shakespearean in theme and scope.) Can't say it will make you happy, but it will make you glad you delved more into his work. Do I like everything he does and says? Like you, no. But his brilliance with words, music, and concept is undeniable. And btw, I tried to find you on Discord and couldn't. What's your handle there?

Ren's live performance video's are just that live! You can always count on Ren's live video to be true to form including MG3, which many reactors believe entirely that it was studio vocals layered over the natural ambient noise of the room giving it the feel of a live performance, but that couldn't be further from the truth. You can watch the BTS making of MG3 if you have any doubts, plus if you play that track from the Sick Boi album you'll notice that the song is at a quicker tempo and has no dramatic pauses within the song unlike this visual presentation. Ren is a perfectionist. It is worthwhile checking out The Wolf Johnson's great behind the scenes extended video (Wolf - a reactor, was invited by Ren to film the behind the scenes footage). This is a very long over 2 hr watch, however at 2:05:30 through to 2:10:00 you will hear and see Ren sitting at that piano winding down playing a beautiful piece and then describing to Wolf how he is self taught and then a conversation with the second Pianist: Charlie Woof-Bryne about the performance. The piano score and strings score (apart from the opening piece played by Ren) were written by Ren. Kia kaha from NZ
@albamartinez4987
@albamartinez4987 9 ай бұрын
Great reaction, thank you. Ren's careless handling of the gun is on purpose to create that tension. Also yes he is the one playing the piano at the beginning. He also composed the whole thing except ironically for the part he plays at the very beginning that sounds classical. As you spotted MG3 is also live, however they had to put in a cut at the wheelchair scene to protect the mic from the rain scene plus be able to set up the quartet too. A word of advice if you plan on reacting to more Ren... please do not talk over the video/music. If you want to say anything, please pause and rewind a few seconds afterwards. Unlike other artists where it might not matter, Ren's music is densely packed with many details which you will inevitably miss and will frustrate the heck out of us 😅 This is especially important if you listen to The Tales of Jenny and Screech trilogy. There is a lot packed in there and you will miss the meaning of the ending if you don't listen with care. But make sure you listen to us and watch the Full Version of the tales as they must be seen in order: Jenny, Screech and Violet. You may also wish to watch the documentary made of MG3 to give you an idea of how this video was pulled off.

Yeah, he strikes me as an extreme perfectionist. In my mind, he doesn't just make music, he creates intricate, multi layered experiences. Ren cuts all of the fat from the bone. Every detail is weighed, measured, and intentional, as far as I can tell. Ren is more intelligent than I am, so if I were to spot something "careless", my first thought would be that I missed something or didn't understand his intent.

Ren doesn’t lip sync, especially the rap. He does when the shoot is completed then run the audio track through Logic Pro, because he needs to balance the vocals and instruments. For this he has to adjust it for each line because compression tools can’t do the job. When he’s busking the bands instruments are recorded via DI but when he’s mixing it in Logic it is painstaking down to the level of line by line including if needed each each individual strike on the top hat.

I'm American and Ren was taught how to load and handle the 45 safely. It was on his trip to Vegas he trained on it (saw the video). So he knows trigger discipline but he was acting like a maniac in his acting role, he was not worried about trigger discipline. Just like the movies, these rules are not followed. Out with your friends and family at the range shooting live rounds....absolutely. Acting with a gun that has no firing pin and a sealed barrel with an empty magazine not a big worry. It is ingrained in me since I have shot guns and rifles my whole life, I have trigger discipline on a nerf gun. If you are not use to using a gun you have not built up that ingrained muscle memory.

Not many reactors have mentioned the bad gun practice. Yes, it was a decommissioned .45 All one take, with the one cut. If you are interested, Wolf Johnson has made a short and a long video on the making of this. He flew to the UK to document the whole filming process. It is interesting to hear there are still people who find it hard to understand Ren does his one shots etc, live. He and the team he has gathered put a lot of effort into making these as an artform. They pride themselves on not following the current trend of producing fake and unnaturally perfect performances as much of the music industry does now days. If you really want to understand where he is coming from, just consume more of his work. It ranges from Dark, to emotional, to catchy and cheeky and anything and everything in between. Ren has some wonderful collaborations with artists like Sam Tompkins, Chinchilla, Victus, Eden Nash, Liv Sangster and a whole heap more. He was in a band called the Big Push also. If you are at all curious, you will look them up as well. I have never heard anyone regret having done so.

This is definitely live and it’s mind blowing. The time spent in choreography and rehearsal is enormous to make a one-take, or even a few takes video. I mean, even ONE SCENE in a movie takes days of rehearsal and careful human and camera choreography to get right. A 30 second commercial can easily include 50 cuts and a full day of shooting. That’s the trade off. Days spent shooting and then editing or days spend blocking and then rehearsing. Reshooting in its entirely, rather than scene by scene, until the whole thing is RIGHT. The only compromise I see here is that the camera is mostly locked off, so one element is less daunting, but still…this is a massive undertaking. So impressive. I often wonder if these one-take endeavors are even worth it, since the only people who notice are kind of movie geeks or production professionals. I don’t think the average viewer even notices, let alone appreciates the mountain of work and skill that’s involved. Think about how many people just didn’t appreciate the effort in the film “Les Miserables”. They may not like musicals or may have found it boring, I don’t know; I loved it. But most people didn’t notice that it was all sung LIVE and that that alone was unprecedented in movie musicals. Since then, there was the opening scene of “La La Land” which was also under appreciated…I’m rambling. This is a brilliant piece of work. That is all.

Ooh, I like the live and on the beach version of Money Game 2; haven't seen that one before. Yeah, they can see through the sacks on their heads, enough to get by anyway lol. If I'm repeating something, I apologize (I'm too lazy to read through 200 comments ha ha). Normally, his one-take videos have no cuts, but in Money Game 3 there is one cut where the camera goes around him when first placed in front of the strings. They had only one custom suit and it would have taken too long to wait for the suit and the floor to dry; plus they only had the one day to film it. One of the water spouts(?) malfunctioned and the one lady violinist's bow got sprayed (Ren and co. paid her for a new one), but she barely moved at all (you can see her moving her bow back as much as possible) so the shot wasn't ruined! If I could make a suggestion: if you are going to talk or comment on something, it's a good idea to pause the video first so you aren't talking over the music and potentially miss something. Then when returning to the video, hit the left arrow so it goes back 5 seconds, so again, you don't miss anything. If you normally do this, sorry, this is the first video I've watched of yours.

Money game basically tells a story of greed. People are often greedy from their core, they do everything to get rich, even commit crimes and in the end it won't make them happy. Ren literally sings in the third part near the end "he has everything he wants, he has fortune and fame. Such a fortunate fool with an unfortunate fate, with a 45 caliber...". The first two parts are more about the few people that have giant amounts of money, using it to abuse people and our planet in order to get even more money. For example in the second part he sings "10: the world is yours, step out on a stage to a round of applause, you're a liar, a cheat, a devil, a whore and you sell seashells on the seashore".

@@becauseisaacthe advent of asylum seekers and even the 'illegal' crossings at the southern border and the ability for any other immigrants to enter the US (and attempting to gain citizenship) are not now or have ever been mutually exclusive, even considering the most stringent of quotas. And yes, actually, the thought process of which you based your opinion are in fact talking points of the conservative end of the spectrum, although fortunately the Overton window is shifting as the country's demographics continue to change. And though I also empathize with what I'm sure was a trying process to bring your loved one with you and go through a frustrating process of obtaining that citizenship, the tortuous (and I _do_ mean torturous) conditions which those entering at the border (even those _legally_ seeking asylum) is something I hardly call "free".. though unironically, it is the one thing these desperate people yearn for most..only to be judged by those who are truly 'free', but too 'dumb' to appreciate it.

As for the gun: I think at 20:27 there's a hand off off-frame to exchange for an empty clip. At 20:34 (I believe) you can barely see the top of the clip before he puts it back in the gun and there appears to be no bullet-colored objects in it. As for the art of it all, you're so spot on. It's amazing by itself from an artistic standpoint, but then you add in the story, the lyrics, etc. and it's a masterpiece. Not just a masterpiece, but yet ANOTHER masterpiece from Ren. Great video reaction, btw. New to the channel. New subscriber, but I've already dug into other reactions (Pink Floyd, NF, etc).

12:10 really though capitalism only provides equal opportunity when its REGULATED: I.e. anti monopoly laws, consumer protection laws, etc etc. Those are policies that are fundamentally more SOCIALIST than CAPITALIST policies. Capitalism at its heart is "money first, for yourself", which really means "money for those who already HAVE money" (a vast swath of the billionaires alive today were born into wealth). In order to maintain high levels of wealth, you're fundamentally going to want to deprive others of the opportunity to really gain anything substantial themselves, which in turn means monopolisation and rampant privatisation that hinder fundamental services like healthcare or even prison systems (you can read about how private prisons make profit off their inmates, and how they incentivise putting more and more people, often minority groups, into jail). Capitalism is not the better evil, a mixed system combining the strengths of each is.

Freedom without restraints always descends into chaos and capitalism without restraint is what we presently have. Mainly because we are in time period where people are especially concerned about their individual rights. To the extent that they can no longer see benefit in acting in a communal manner. The opportunity is coming far faster than many were anticipating.

During one of the many many takes in part 1, Ren stepped on the guitar and left a divot. You can see the divot in the tale of Jenny and Screech during Jenny's tale, early on. Same guitar lol The slow pan behind the wheelchair in part 3 is the only cut. They had to do a cut because they wouldn't have time to dry everything out when they used the sprinklers overhead during the following sequence. It still malfunctioned, and you can see the violinist on the left shift a bit and shake her bow as water accidentally gets on her some. Luckily she stayed with it and was able to play even with slightly wet equipment. The point isn’t about capitalism or any “ism” it’s about greed… greed that will consume the entire world and all of us with it. Unless we learn to reform our nature and set aside greed for a care for all of humanity and the environment. Our story will be broken limited versions of “Jimmy”. We will be destroyed by greed whether we are the rich, the middle class, or poor. We need to break free of “the money game” while we are still trimmed in so many ways by it.

I always appreciate your decision to speak of Christ and salvation to your audience. Never apologize for sharing the gospel. As for the trilogy you just reacted to, all were live performances. In Part I, Romain Axisa from "The Big Push" is playing the guitar. Regarding the line "She sells seashells on the seashore," in Part I, which Ren also quoted in "Hi Ren," it was originally a song, with words by Terry Sullivan and music by Harry Gifford, written in 1908: She sells seashells on the seashore. The shells she sells are seashells, I’m sure. For if she sells seashells on the sea-shore Then I’m sure she sells seashore shells. Someone else, whose name I wish I could remember for proper credit, provided some interesting information to "Money Game" regarding the line “Why just shells? Why limit yourself? She sells seashells, sell oil as well” In 1833, Marcus Samuel decided to expand his London-based business, selling antiques, and began selling oriental sea shells. When his sons took over the business, after his death in 1970, they started to expand the business, which eventually led to oil. That British multinational company is known today as “Shell Oil”. They literally went from selling shells to selling oil. Part II actually has a full lyric video in addition to the performance you chose; the live seashore performance is a shorter version. As for Part III, apart from “Hi Ren,” and the “Jenny/Screech/Violet Trilogy,” “Money Game Part 3” is, in my opinion, Ren’s best work to date, and the bar he previously set was already incredibly high. It is an amazing and thought-provoking piece of performance art. Ren composed the music for the piano (except for the classical section at the beginning), as well as for the cello and violin parts. He also played the opening segment on the piano. The guy who came up from behind and replaced Ren is Charlie Woof-Bryne, an accomplished classically trained UK pianist who also occasionally plays jazz and pop. This wasn't a total one-take but two separate one-takes. The video was a one-take up to the wheelchair getting turned around. They had to cut when the camera was pointed at the back of the wheelchair in order to prepare for the rain scene at the end. It could only be done once because Ren only had this one suit and his pants were about to get soaked. Moreover, the lavalier mic needed to be moved from his jacket lapel to his red tie and covered to keep it from getting wet. Some people assume that this was a studio recording, that Ren was lip syncing, and that the lavalier mic was only used to catch the ambient sounds. Steve Dimakis (@stevedimakis7403) shared the following information gathered from one of Ren’s twitch stream, “There is no lip syncing…Instead there are a tonne of mics rigged up on the camera and around the studio…REN then goes through and mixes the recording from across every mic that recorded the audio.” Robert Marar (@robmarar) explain in more detail, “In Knox's interview with Samuel the co-director and DP, it was confirmed that this is a live performance. Samuel….said that they needed to setup the pianist with inner ears so he could hear Ren throughout the performance…. the further away Ren got from the piano the harder it was for the pianist to hear him for the cues in the songs to know when the cord shifts took place.” Andrew Lloyd Webber, after viewing Money Game 3, stated that Ren is one of the most unique songwriters and storytellers he has seen in recent times and that he hoped that Ren’s album “Sick Boi” would hit #1. That is quite a compliment coming from this musical genius and legend. At the beginning of Jimmy’s life, “one year old and his first words were’ mine, mine, gimme’; two years, old he was walking; three years old, walking quickly; four years old he was running around the pavement of his city. Then, “40 years old, and he cursed the words ‘mine, mine, gimme’; 41, he wasn’t walking; 42, not walking quickly; 43, never running around the pavement of his city.” ROM (@ROMsquad) during their reaction pointed out the irony that Jimmy was focused on chasing wealth and fame only to lose his ability to run as a result. Not sure if everyone noticed but the violin and viola segment of the piece is playing Ren’s humming vocals from Money Game Part 1.

Ren never fails to make you think, his art is literally is it's own genre, and I'm certain you're not supposed to "agree" with everything he says. He is expressing his thoughts and observations about the world we live in, and that truth can be a very ugly, uncomfortable and frightening thing. I believe his purpose in making these videos is to make you uncomfortable with the things that happen all around us every day, so "normal" that we've become desensitized to the sheer madness. I love Ren for this, and I love that people are paying attention and getting shaken by his words and images. He is the very best kind of storyteller. I'm so grateful that he managed to somehow survive the horror of his earlier life and is here with us to share his music, poetry, artistry and brilliant mind. Ren will change lives, thereby changing the world, one song at a time.

Ren most definitely was NOT lipsynching in MG, nor in MG3 for that matter. Ren's known for his live, 1 take videos, as in Hi Ren. Money Game was also a live, 1 take. It was Ren and Sam's first attempt at a live, 1 take video and they underestimated the complexity of the format, resulting in about 180 attempts. Hi Ren, in contrast was just 4 takes, with the 3rd take being chosen. Money Game 3 was going to be single take but they had to make a single cut, as the 'rain machine' kept malfunctioning. If it's a live video from Ren, then it's a genuinely live performance and in almost all instances it will also be 1 take.
