"N2 has left the chat" - LOL, that's great. I'm really surprised a diazo compound is that stable. Diazomethane is legendary for how dangerous it is, and most diazoalkanes are similarly ready to ragequit existence.

Absolutely amazing quality of the video as always and great chemistry behind it :D One question tho. How did you make the thumbnail structure with the colored outline? I don't think it's possible like that with ChemDraw :/

7:54 is this even considered a mesomeric structure? i mean its also a constitutional isomer because the carbon makes a new bond to the terminal nitrogen which it didnt have previously.
@totalsynthesis3 ай бұрын
Not sure what the strict definition os (does it truly have to have the same connectovitied), but the authors called it canonical structure as well in the SI (which is a synonym unless I forgot something). In any case, it's just the "extreme" human representation which does not exist but contributes/ can help rationalize the properties/ computations

"carbon atom transfer" I'm not a chemistry expert but does that mean that this can add carbon atoms to most things?
@totalsynthesis3 ай бұрын
Not to most things, it depends on the specific molecule!

I really like your video, but I have to admit it pains me to look at those di-ylids drawing. 2 consecutive double-bonds should be drawn as linear, just like the diazo moiety. If you wanna draw the angle in the di-ylid molecule, I would suggest you leave at least 1 pair of opposite charges so that the hybridization of the central carbon is appropriately correlated to the geometry pictured in the video.
@totalsynthesis3 ай бұрын
Thanks! I think its completely fine drawing like this, similar to how you draw cyclic allenes bent as well
