Nothing, they are both HDMI 2.1 Cables, that can support 4k 120hz or 8k 60hz. It's just that one uses different materials so it's a different feel/color/texture, and the length would be different as well.

This doesn't boost performance. The games will still render at the same resolution they otherwise would and be scaled down or up to whatever output resolution of your display. VRR may mitigate perceived performance dips though if that's what you're referencing, but the raw performance itself is unchanged regardless of what output resolution you set the console at.

It definitely doesn't "boost" numeral performance, but it is a perceived performance boost, like you described. You gotta remember that the core Playstation/console audience is relatively casual. Being too technical is just going to get them more confused, and lead to less views.

Not totally correct here. Some games have performance options that are VRR specific. Instead of "graphics" and "frame rate" as your options, some games will use VRR with the "graphics" setting and unlock the framerate, allowing a higher framerate than if you played on the graphics setting without VRR. GT7 is this way I believe. It has a 120hz option that scales down the visuals, but it has a setting for VRR where it has the nicer visuals, but uncaps the framerate so it runs somewhere between 60 and 120fps.

@@winrargameplaysmy gigabyte G32QC is 1440p and VRR. I got it about 6 months ago and found at the time it was the best value for money monitor for ps5. The only one that size that was a bit cheaper with the same features was an acer nitro xz2. I got one of them for my son for Christmas and the screen cracked while installing it. I was holding it with barely any pressure and it went pop. So I don’t recommend them! I got him a gigabyte M32QC and the difference is the M has an IPS panel and the G has a VA panel. Don’t even known what that means 😂 but I believe my G32 is putting out a slightly better picture than my sons M. In fairness I haven’t even changed his settings at all so it might not be running at its best possible performance. But Fortnite at 120FPS and 1440p on these screens looks and feels amazing!

VRR does not boost fps, it just smoothes visual judder. And setting your resolution to 1440p will not increase performance either, the render resolution will always be the same.

@@dhaisa Yes and yes. The way I understand it is that the console will dynamically lower the resolution to hit the target frames. But if it is set to 1080p and you choose performance mode it will in most cases just stick to 1080p, because it senses that it wont have to dynamically lower res to hit the target frames. Console games are usually locked to either 30 (quality mode at 2k or 4k) or 60 (dynamic frames at 2k and below), with only a handful going up to 122 or 144 frames, which is why the VRR use case is quite limited atm. Most are playing on TVs after all and not a whole lot of older ones go beyond 60.

Something not many people are mentioning about this update is that if you have a disc copy of a game but then you somehow get it digitally, you don't need the disc to play it anymore. I actually tried to snag the digital copy of HFW from PSPlus a few days ago, even though I own it physically, and it actually wouldn't let me. I know if I deleted my copy and then downloaded the digital version it would have worked but I didn't want to so I just moved on cuz it wasn't that important. Then this update comes out and it's for the exact thing I was wishing was real. Surprised it took em this long honestly. Should be a basic feature. Just thought everyone should know cuz that's a big feature to me.

It’s not. It just allows ppl to sacrifice resolution to smooth out minimal jutter that most ppl wont even notice. If you haven’t noticed it, its best to keep it that way and enjoy your ps5 as is. Doing things like this gets you into a rabbit hole that’s impossible to get out of, and frankly takes the fun out of gaming… trust me I’m a former PC gamer who’s transitioning to ps5 lol

Since this new update i cannot use 1440p 120hz anymore. This sucks so hard! My Samsung tv has HDMI 2.0 and supports 1440P 120hz with vrr. The Xbox Series X and my pc support this features just fine. Before this new PlayStation update only VRR was not supported by the PS5 and 1440P 120hz worked just fine. Bleh!!!

It does you just need to accept the first couple of test screens that test 1440@60 in sdr and then hdr. During the test wait a few seconds then hit right on the d-pad and x once, wait about 5 seconds and do it again, then you should actually see the 1440@120 test screen come up. Hit yes on that as well and then just wait. The next 2 screens will test vrr at different ranges which both SHOULD work but will not because you’re on an hdmi 2.0 screen, then it’ll fault out and show what your screen can display which will not include vrr. Annoying but this should result in you downgrading 120hz gaming to 1440p while going back up to 4k for 60 hz provided you have “automatic” set for resolution and 120hz enable and 4k video data rate and basically every other video output set to auto.

@@monkeyball9223 If you can see the FPS rate while playing a 4k,120hz game, check if the average fps while turning around if it lowers down the fps or it makes frame drops. If yes that mean the ps5 is lowering the performance rate so it doesn’t overheat and if that happens try to use 1440p (make sure the vrr, 120hz and allm are in automatic) and do the look around test, if it doesn’t cause frame drops, your 2k settings is better than the 4k settings when it comes to performance mode

Sony's VRR implementation on PS5 currently only works through HDMI 2.1. Some HDMI 2.0 monitors support FreeSyn/Gsync which IS a type of VRR, but it is not compatible with the PS5 since it's not HDMI 2.1. VRR means variable refresh rate, which means that the display can update its picture exactly when a new frame from the PS5 is generated. Without VRR, a 60hz (120hz) monitor displays every frame for 16.67 ms (8.33 ms). This means that frame drops are noticeable because they cause duplicate frames. If a game runs at 59 fps on a 60hz display then it will display 58 different frames for 16.67 ms each, and then the 59th frame will be displayed for 33.33 ms. The uneven frame-pacing will look stuttery on your screen. With VRR capable displays, if a game drops to 59fps then each frame will be shown for 16.95 ms evenly. This means that games that run between 50 and 60 fps, while not looking completely smooth like a solid 60 fps, will feel more responsive and smooth on a VRR display than the stuttery picture on a fixed refresh rate display.

Ive got a 4k 144hz monitor (Gigabyte M32UC) its great altho i dont think there are alot of games that support 120hz. Hogwarts Legacy for example, i play in balanced mode i id say its okey altho it does not go up to 120hz, probably around 60fps at max. Performance mode is probably 1440p and fps between 60-70.. does anyone know a AAA game that plays in 4k/120hz or even 1440p/120hz? I have not come across that yet. Also, if you want 4k on Hogwarts Legacy you need to drop down to 30fps.. i find that pretty bad given its 2023.. i simply cant go down to 30 fps after playing most games around 60-80fps

Getting a 1440p 120hz monitor shouldn't be too expensive, look for brands like Acer, Spectre, and AOC, as they have reasonably priced monitors. Just keep in mind that the more expensive options have Variable Refresh Rate, whilst the more cheaper alternatives don't.

As to why to use 1440p, some monitors don't support VRR at 4K. It's not really about performance, since almost every PS5 game has an internal resolution-performance setting that works independently of the native output resolution of the console.

How did you manage to enable vrr? I have the ps5 connected to an LG monitor that support freesync and it is 4k resolution but it only has HDMI 2.0 inputs. I tried changing to 2k to see if the vrr option could be enabled but unfortunately it is not. Thanks for your time

@@johnraf4825 I turn on freesync and it worked for me. Before that the ps5 said vrr can’t be supported by this tv. If freesync is on and game mode is off it looks great

Hi there. Any advice on the "Lan cable disconnected - Lan cable connected" issue? I have done the reset cache and rebuild in safe mode. Done several resets to the setup. But still I'm getting random drop outs. Not as many. But enough.. My router is cheap and 5 years old. CAT5 cable is brand new. Any advice?? Is this a common problem on PS5 or do I have a serious internal problem (dread)

Could be a problem with the lan port on the router too. But i would just connect the lan to good 5+GHz wifi and enjoy wireless. Less chance of electrical spikes through lan as well.

For anyone with an LG OLED C1, be careful not to leave AMD Freesync enabled as it's dropping the @120 to @85 or less sometimes. Also run the tests until you get 1440p tested in FIVE settings and they all display, it was bit buggy and temperamental at first and just did the 3 tests with no 120hz VRR etc.

Freesync helps smooth out the framerate and doesn't make your frames drop. Not sure what you're talking about.

@@Gok... I play with a 40-inch 1080p TV. It's not ideal but if you seriously can't enjoy games and are constantly thinking about it I respectfully would say you have other kind of problems. 4K would be optimal but people can and do have fun at 1080p.

Damn I shouldn't have watched this, it just reminded me of how pissed off I am that I threw down 2K on a good 4K screen, just to have HDMI 2.1/ VRR, back in 2022 LOL. Before, my PC and consoles all shared my Alienware 3840x1620 monitor, but running games at 1080P on the PS5 was just downright insulting, so I sold it and now I'm running both devices over an expensive ass TV that I had to plan in such a way that the TV also supported PC gaming well, which many TVs are shitty at. So I got the Sony 42" Oled, which is funny, because I never game at 4K or 1080p. I game at 1440p. Especially on my PC, which has a GPU 2x the size of the PS5s lol I would have much preferred running my games at 1440p
