Anytime a company boosts the overall performance of their hardware it usually means one of three things. 1. They flat out stable overclocked it which means less battery life and a shorter half-life 2. Pipeline method, figured out a better way to route data or how it handles data ultimately increasing performance 3. chipset was safe clocked to begin and now it is just set to its normal clock meaning the chipset was downclocked by default which can offer better stability. Obviously I do not know which method was used but in general these are the usual suspects when it comes to hardware magically getting better with a software update. There are others, for instance they found a bug and fixed it which increased performance.

Those VR shoes sound like a cool add-on if you live in a place that has limited space. That way you don't have to have the VR walking track (I'm not sure of the proper term) in the middle of your living room all the time or you have to take it apart and put it away anytime you want to use it. Hopefully they get the cost down and you don't trip when you use those. Hopefully with all the walking and stuff doesn't cause any disturbances to the user's neighbors or anything like that.
@MsHojat
@MsHojat 2 жыл бұрын
It seems like they won't last as long, could break easier, and also have to deal with batteries. I agree that they still seem great, but that's some major downsides. If someone wanted foot locomotion for VR for an arbitrarily long period such as 10 years, this option may end up costing more if it needs 2 or 3 purchases compared to just one static slideboard setup.

These would be super effective for multiplayer. Particularly if you combined them with boffer swords (foam). Then you could have full contact sword fights in a VR world. The computer would keep people from running into each other, unless you get close enough for a melee fight, then it keeps both of you a proper relative distance while keeping everyone else from bumping into you.

@@brokenocci Unlikely doesn't devalue the idea, dude. lol - I know that standalone VR headsets are glorified mobile processing devices. We all know. It's not impossible to imagine the possibility of a main HMD being the equivalent of your motherboard and case, with the CPU being upgradeable. Just look at what the brand "Framework" has been doing with their laptops. Honestly, I'd gladly take a bulkier HMD if it meant it was upgradeable with other components down the line.

@@FrontwaysLarry what you are saying is completely possible and I understand it but you are looking at something very far in the future, so far that probably the companies will never try to get into because is something not so cost-effective as they would like. Framework is doing something very brave, Dell is following with the 1 minute fixable laptop and I'm very hyped for the future, though we don't know if it's something the market is going to accept. I said that it's very unlikely because this vision is too much long term, laptops are 50~ years old and NOW someone is doing something to change the standards, HMDs are almost 10 and not nearly as perfect as we need. I agree about Location Based VR needing to step it up. If I ever won the lottery I would 1000% open up a VR theme park. For example, a small simulation room designed to simulate a beach (Sand at your feet, heat lamp in the corner, fans blowing air etc) coupled with one of the commercial-only Varjo human eye resolution headsets and the absolute best PC hardware, then have an Unreal Engine 5 developer make an ultra hi res otherworldy beach scene or depending on how brave you are, have it simulate an asteroid hitting in the ocean and you sit there as a massive tidal wave rushes at you. I am honestly surprised someone hasn't done something like this yet.

For location based VR, look up for EVA (E-sport Virtual Arenas). This is a French Start Up specialized in location based VR for e-sport and which is collaborating with HTC. During the 2022 Paris Game Week, they demo'ed their new system using Wifi 6 to connect the players's Vive Focus 3 to to a computer outside the area. (Above it I think.) And they demonstatred it with a 500 square meters arena.

When it comes to location-based vr, I always wonder, why don’t they do something like Void Vr did with custom vr maps that would overlay over physical environments one to one. Being able to do something like parkour or fps games in vr, actually feeling the walls you crouch behind or platforms you can jump on, and walls you can actually touch without your hands just going straight through them.
@user-on6uf6om7s

@user-on6uf6om7s

@@DaniFewell A proper Void experience would be pretty expensive and there are cheap VR arcade experiences where it's basically just an empty room where you can walk around and play roomscale experiences but there aren't any attempts to replicate the virtual space in the real space. What might be nice is something in the middle. It doesn't have to be quite as elaborate as The Void with the heat, haptics, physical guns you can pickup and use but at least some walls and basic props to make it a bit more immersive.
@DaniFewell
@DaniFewell 2 жыл бұрын
@@user-on6uf6om7s yeah, I feel like with a couple of walls and boxes, maybe it would be nice. The main trouble would be that you would need custom maps and calibration which would mean a dedicated team for each location. With most public vr rooms right now it doesn’t really need as much calibration because you’re just in a room, and “custom games” can be shared amongst locations. There is far less scalability for custom experiences because the experience will usually depend on the layout of the building you have and your budget as well as just general safety constraints.
@user-on6uf6om7s
@user-on6uf6om7s 2 жыл бұрын
@@DaniFewell Yeah, I think one good solution would be rooms with rows of mounts on the ground that would either be flush with the ground or covered when not in use so that you could walk over them without tripping but could be used to mount temporary walls in a variety of different configurations. That way, a single room could be reconfigured for a different experience every day or maybe even multiple times a day. It still wouldn't be as configurable as most VR arcades where you can just come in whenever you want and play a dozen different games but it would be easier than The Void where they needed specific layouts with lots of elaborate props for every different experience.

Having worked in Location Based VR in the past, I can confirm that the money and time required to get anywhere with LB VR is so large that unless you are from the get go looking into producing/using tech that cannot be replicated at home, by the time the product comes out, it will already be partially outdated, making it a very hard market to keep up with.

A case to be made for location based VR in my opinion is choreographed experiences related to real world objects and the multiplayer aspect. It's not as easy to find several people with headsets, put them in the same physical location, and then initiate an shared space VR game. When I went to Area 15, it was pretty immersive going with my friends! We went through a cave, and I had to find a 2x4 and drag it over to make a bridge for the rest to physically walk over on. It had smells, heat, and a Jamaican "voice of God" live experience that was really fun to interact with as he gave us hints. I think the experience is kind of short for obvious reasons, but I do see a lot of potential use cases to further enhance immersion as well as make the experience easier to get into.

Re: the location based VR, I've always wished for a location based go-kart game where one person drives and the other shoots. Probably in custom stationary rigs, because I doubt anyone's gonna insure kart drivers strapping something onto their face. Outside of the rigs I don't think it could offer _too_ much you can't get at home, though I do dislike the racing sims I've played with the lack of any wheel to grab onto. I'd love to go from looking at this barebones cockpit to putting on the headset and seeing it recreated 1:1 in a war-kart.

I wouldn't be surprised if there's already VR go-carting, since it's actually probably quite safe, just a but difficult to do due to such a large area (would have to use inside-out tracking which seems to be more of a proprietary tech to work with, making it difficult to develop for a business).

4:30 odds are it's his work that got pushed in the update anyways. As others have mentioned before, Carmack is the world's foremost expert on software efficiency, that's why Oculus needed him.

I would love to see more advancements in stationary physical locomotion. As somebody who uses VR as an exercise routine, some games I enjoy like Skyrim VR, would be a lot more fun a lot more engaging, not to mention a lot more exercise, if I was physically walking in the world.

Arcades might still have a market for unique stuff like you said. Biggest would be use of real props, heat and environments that bring haptics to life in a way that in-home might be prohibitively expensive. Went to a VOID place, their use of real objects and heat lamps to provide haptic sensations was next level. Home haptic devices are getting better, but cant beat a stage that has the matching props, doors, and railings as in-game. AR/VR prototypes starting to show up on the other hand... possibility of bringing your own environment or digitally masked version into the game, might give that same experience someday or in next gen devices.

jeez i remember years ago about the hype with the quest 2, that when i got it! and now so many new vrs and updates are coming out, its so cool to follow and to see where vr takes us in the future. i wonder what 2023 brings us in the vr world.

I'ld like to have shoes like this. I'm tired of moving around with a thumbstick. What I liked in Blade & Sorcery is that you can run by moving your arms...that already is more natural than pushing the thumbstick and breaking it (my left thumbstick is not functioning well anymore because of that movement)...

What software license? Also is it just going to work with Steam VR for GNU software out of the box?

Well to be fair to the Void, it did have some really cool feedback that's not easy to achieve at home. In the Star Wars experience, for example, when you exited the shuttle you could feel the heat from Mustafar's environment and smell the ash - neither of which is easy to replicate at home.

So i just purchased a valve index (hasn't even arrived yet) and I was wondering what do you all think the chances are the deckard actually makes an appearance soon? Of course the valve index will remain a great headset but I feel like it would be quite unfortunate if the deckard comes out and cost the same as the index and ends up being better.

I know what you mean, i have the same question. And well, idk tbh, i'll wait till 26st March which is my birthday, to decide anything, if there's no new tech vr related, then u good to go.

QOTW: Have you heard of Manual Redirected Walking? Redirected Walking has been a thing since 2005, but users now are doing it with just joystick turn and real movement(walking). You might have seen it VRchat where it goes by the name of "Infinite Walking" or "Role-Play Walking". I've even done it in Half-Life: Alyx! 16km total, although with many issue that game has with MRDW. I believe that it has the potential to be a real game changer for locomotion. Only playspace size and the lack of awareness of this locomotion is the issue(and maybe the cable too).

8:00 I definitely would want some kind of waist belt or harness hanging from the ceiling, it would be easy to fall over in intense game situations

Hey thrill, I have a suggestion for a video that is really big for people on a quest 2 budget that want full body tracking. Theres an app for the IPhone called "PinoQuest" it can also be used on a pc as well. full body tracking for 17$/year. Even has finger tracking and its pretty good.

The only problems with increasing the clock rate on these chips is cooling and power usage. Quest 2 cooling is kinda garbo, so it would get noticibly hotter, and even worse, you'd shorten the HMD's already short battery life.

Seems like the Quest 3 is on the horizon and Quest 2s aren't dying fast enough so they need to hasten the process. Mine died just before they implemented the price increase so I'm ahead of the curve.

We need to get some true motion compensation in the oculus when it comes to platforms I have a dof reality motion platform for sim racing and it’s a blast except when the sway and traction loss features put you in the passenger seat or out the window when high g turns happen

I've encountered a similar issue with link cable but it just doesn't load me into vr, it's possible that my cable is just garbage as I've had it for like 3 years now and it's a 16ft cable, but the pc app often just removes my quest from being seen from what I've noticed

10:35 What do you mean with "it's kind of a weird change"? It's perfect now, because the crucial difference between games that are built for VR and will not work without a headset, and games that run flatscreen by default but have sort of VR mode implemented, is visible at once in the place a normal user would expect
