One of my favorite Nirvava songs is Lounge Act. I love the bass intro, I love how the song progresses into harder and faster.

This song still amazes me 30+ years after hearing it. I started doing karaoke on an app a few years ago and I never really sang before. It turns out that I do best on Nirvana songs and i didn’t expect that even though they are my favorite. BUT…I can never get Lounge Act right! The vocals on that are in some bizarre pitch that I just can’t reach. Most Nirvana songs are my comfort zone but I just can’t figure out how he sings this one. With other bands, I can kind of get close with practice, but not this one. I have done most of their songs and I don’t know what it is about the vocals on this one.

This, yes. I was recently talking with a friend and I mused that you could reasonably have taken Lounge Act and Drain You off of Nevermind, replaced them with literally anything else, and then built another record off of them as lead singles, and it would have worked.

People often overlook how essential Krist Novoselic's basslines were to Nirvana's sound. Him and Kurt had this symbionic relationship musically. Alot of Krist's playing is unorthodox, but it always mirrors Kurt's own eccentricities in his playing.

I love D-7. It sounds like a fun song to play on drums and it has that soft>loud thing that Teen Spirit has. There are lots of good stuff that doesn't get radio play or that people really listen to that is incredible. I loved the Incesticide record and the Outcesticide records are really good too.

When I was in a music school, I mentioned to a jazz head what a great songwriter Kurt was and he went 'When has anyone ever praised Kurt Cobain as a SONGWRITER?' I sometimes feel like people confuse Kurt's slacker image with his musical ability. He actually had incredibly intricate melodies and bizarre chord changes and managed to fool generations of both fans and musicians that he was playing really basic 3 chord music. In Bloom has 10 (mostly) chromatic chords, for example.

Ask that jazz head to write you a song that would be a massive commercial success but still has an edge and an alternative or interestingly progressive feel. Or even a retro feel but still 'of the moment'. If he can't hear Cobain's songwriting ability and communication skills to a mass audience then he's clearly got some kind of problem with his ears.

“You Know You’re Right” is my absolute favorite Nirvana song. I remember hearing it for the first time as a preteen and feeling such a swell of emotion that I normally only got from bands like Pink Floyd. It hits exactly the same twenty years later. But if I was going to pick an “underrated” Nirvana song, I’d personally go with “Sappy.” Such a simple yet beautiful heavy dirge. That guitar solo is emotionally charged punk bliss.

I actually thought Sappy was going to be the song Rick was referring to. It's always been one of my favorites. Plus, You Know You're Right isn't even underrated. It's properly rated for being released 10 years after Nirvana's & Grunge's (if you want to call Nirvana grunge, I personally don't) heyday. Only old Nirvana heads were into it in 2002. It's funny you mention Floyd because they were the band I got WAAAY into after Nirvana. in the 90s. Probably no coincidence that's also when I got way into dropping acid every weekend. But anyway Nirvana is one of those bands like Floyd, the Beatles, and Led Zeppelin that don't have many throw away songs. There are a few songs on Bleach that I skip over, and I was never a fan of "Come as You Are." But otherwise, even counting unreleased tracks like Sappy I love em all and it's hard to pick a favorite.

Cobain was indisputably one of the best melody writers of his generation. People say he was a bad guitarist and overrated as a musician but nobody can deny that the guy could write infectious hooks that stand the test of time. That's not easy to do.

If you look at the way Kurt actually played certain chords you'll find some of these traits in other places. It helped him discover the melodies because he had a 'wrong' note to fight against or clash with or create something different with. The way he bars with his third finger on power chords is quite unusual. It could be considered 'incorrect' but it leads to these different combinations and different territories to explore. It wasn't born out of music theory knowledge, it was simply born out of playing chords in a bastardised way because he didn't know any better.. Having a natural gift for melody was very helpful to his success though, of course.. but he wouldn't be able to explain it to you from a theoretical point of view. He didn't really consider himself a proper musician.. It was never about technical expertise for that band. That's why the punk ethos was important to him as an influence because he realised you didn't need to be a great player or educated in music theory to express yourself and communicate with a mass audience on an emotional and artistic level. I'm happy he made that connection and gave us those songs.

Excellent summary. It’s both tragic, yet beautiful, because more than not, Kurt belongs among the creative minds who’s “bastardized” way of playing/thinking/etc is what makes them a pioneer in their fields. It’s exactly that kind of doing things outside the box that challenges the status quo.

@@constructionbootgazer That's right.. it's a combination of an idiosyncratic guitar style, the natural gift for melody and a voice and attitude that connected with people on an emotional level.. and being the right guy in the right time and place for whatever reason. It's a perfect storm of chance and fate. It's comparable culturally to the Beatles or Star Wars what happened with Nirvana. Not as big maybe but the more you look at it it's almost a miracle it ever happened at all considering where he came from.

He was like anybody else. But had tremendous creativity. He knew basic theory. You can find interviews of him pretending he does not know theory and others where he speaks of music like someone knowing basic theory (few years of learning). Problem is the cult after his death trying to make of him some kind of genius. He was just an ordinary guy.

Beautiful. Cobain had it all as a song writer. The delivery of this song is intense, how the melody flows, the tension and release, the lyric (OMG), the pain and emotion are all pouring out, it's a tough listen. The final offering of a genius. Excellent analysis.

Would love Beato to do a breakdown of "Aneurysm" (live version of course) at some point, it has to be one of the most 'complex' Nirvana songs. The long multi part intro before singing begins, the bass lines alternating during certain parts to help build intensity / slow down the pace, the insane drumming, and that melody...

I'm 73, and ever sinceTeen Spirit stopped me dead in my tracks when I first heard it, Nirvana has remained my favorite band, and I go way back to Surfin' by the Beach Boys in 1962, and I graduated from high school during the Summer of Love, 1967, which was an absolute tsunami of revolutionary music. But Nirvana is my absolute obsession. Aneurysm still gives me goose bumps, especially the live version at Del Mar, with it's frantic pace and absence of the chirpy, grating "beat it, beat it", which may be Kurt's only false step. The subtle modulations in tempo, and the thematic complexity -- there are 4 separate themes running theough the song. This was what I played in the car as I drove my 8 year old son to his soccer games on Saturdays. It amped him up, to say nothing of me.

@@Thinkforwardnow Big shout out to The Replacements! Listening to tracks like " Tommy gets his tonsils Out", that ragged raw melodic alt rock with Punk Undertones is a huge influence on Nirvana. I remember 20 years ago a good friend burned "Let it Be" for me. He'd just gotten into the Replacements and knowing I was a lifelong Nirvana fan, he enthused on Westerberg's impact on their sound. Hearing the album, I knew he was right, and I heard the connection.

The acoustic version of "old age" is my absolute favorite. Such a haunting song with it's raw/home demo tinge. Beautiful. Shed many a tear to that song while going through a rough period of my life. The evolution from each Nirvana album to the next was astonishing. I like all of them, but I like each one more than the one before it (I’m not including Incesticide, which is great in its own right). This track will forever be only idea we get about what would’ve come next. It’s a haunting song anyway, but that sentiment makes it that much more haunting to me.

Kurt was (is) real. I still remember hearing this song when it was released driving in blizzard in Alberta, it Was absolutely haunting. All I can say is I still want more. My kids now listen to Nirvana and love it.

Nirvana is my second favorite band of all time (after The Beatles). I’ll NEVER forget that day in April 1994, when I was 16, when I came home from school and heard the news. Anyway, Rick is spot on that this song is underrated and I respect Rick even more for picking this tune. I always thought Frances Farmer was criminally underrated as well.

he wasn´t a good musician , this said by him and if you listen to the records they are not musically speaking, work of art. Some forget that before he died he´s last record which is a very good album wasn´t much sold, i myself was in the last concert he gave in Portugal this before flying to Italy and the space was 1/5 of the room filled but the ones who went to see him were a good audience , he even said " you´re not much but a great audience" and he played the entire concert having a public that did like nirvana ,you didn´t once heard"PLAY, SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT!!!" if he hadn´t died today was one more band that no one buy´s his records or with the level of improvement they would be a band that always sells a few albums world wide and concerts would always have public, the unpluged was a very sad concert this because he was very high on heroin and if you saw the entire show, you would remenber he going to the public to light a gigar ,this one after the other , Lee Renaldo was laughing because of the whole situation and some people think he was sober, AHAHAH!!! but they put out a great show

Contrary to the liner notes of the album that this track was released on, as well as the music video for the song, Kurt isn’t actually singing “Pain” in the song’s chorus. The isolated vocal track has been available for some time, and upon listening it becomes clear that Kurt is simply belting out the word “Hey” over and over again. And, it makes sense, in the greater context of Kurt’s song writing, because he often liked to sing the word “hey!” when it came time to exclaim something in a song. Lithium, Heart-Shaped Box, Dive, Smells Like Teen Spirit, and Tourette’s all spring to mind as other examples of Kurt summoning an emphatic “Hey!” from his chest and throat to express an emotion he didn’t feel like putting into words. I suspect that, phonetically, it was a very easy and comfortable syllable for him to sing. He could really _lean_ into it.

i always thought it was obviously 'Hey' ever since it came out, i dont know who perpetuated the 'Pain' myth but its really hard to hear it as 'pain' and ive tried hearing as that many times. annoyed me seeing that in every review when it came out. The lyrics are a bit on the nose for me, hes usually a bit more subtle with his subjects, metaphors and contradictions and humour, he must have been in a bad place to be this direct with communicating his misery.but i think singing 'pain' would have been a bit much for even him

The lyrics building into the chorus are: “No thought was put into this / I always knew it’d come to this / Things have never been so swell / I have never failed to fail”, and the chorus is then “Hey, you know you’re right” (and he modifies that to “You know your rights” at the end).

I will never forget the first time I heard this song. I was a Nirvana fan already and about to buy the Best Of the day of its release just for that song but having never heard it before and uncapable of waiting until I get home I just listen to it at the CD shop with their earphones. I was blown away by the simple yet evocative melody. I felt I knew that song before, like it was part of me. An indescribable feeling.

I think you actually just summed up my childhood that I never understood….. I signed to an indie in the early summer of 93 and they sent myopic this little old lady near Detroit that made me lay an the hard wood floor and put weights on my stomach and make me vocally march the note’s she played on the piano, that happened for months before they put us in the studio…. I remember quite well when Nirvana debuted and the world over changed from glam to grunge. I was instantly hooked to the style and sound vs the previous that I preferred in bands like Anthrax, Slayer, Exodus etc. Remembering how much of an impact it had on everything from music to fashion. It just took over like a hurricane. All the sudden, the way I looked and dressed was being hijacked by the more popular kids in highschool. That was a mood killer!

It’s amazing the impact that Nirvana and Kurt Cobain are still having. A lot of younger people I know really like them. Just did a song with a very talented young woman from Hong Kong and she loves them. Also a female guitarist I know in Japan named Keisandeath is apparently releasing covers of every song on Nevermind in order, she just put out Breed a few minutes ago. I remember being so heavy into Nirvana around (2003?) when this was originally put out and having no idea it was an unheard-of (for the most part) song. I just remember I had never heard it and I always thought it was just a B side song I had never heard. Blew my mind when I realized it was unreleased. So I got to enjoy hearing a Nirvana song for the first time with everyone else. Old fans and new. Absolutely amazing to have this pop up in the early 2000s! 8+ years after he left us.

I could be wrong but I believe most of the greatest artist never really knew too much about music itself, they just really liked the sounds and we're so in love with it they could seemingly create their own from their ear. Very unique people for sure. I used to play all the time and couldn't even read sheet music for the first few years I did it. Was just good at feeling the songs out I was creating. "Milk It" is the greatest Nirvana song made. it was a harrowing visceral showcase into the horror that was the mind of Kurt Cobain. Radio Friendly Unit Shifter is another one. I would have loved to hear the Deeper "In Utero" version of Kurts Music more often.. he really hit a psychological and emotional peak with that album
