Jemma you are right about your boat .It is a vintage one with an illustrious wartime history. Just think of all the vintage cars that have been faithfully restored and now, on special occasions chug around the UK roads, now that is also history allbeit a little bit of a different type. So you both are restoring a functioning historical piece of UK maritime history. and doing a damned good job of it. You Simon and Jemma can both be well pleased with what you both have accomplished.

HI it's Mark in Chichester from AMS marine services.! a patron has made a reference to the British marine safety federation this is for river boats which have to have a safety certificate and nothing to do with sea going craft. I myself are unsure but I do not think there is any rule to do with distance from fuel tanks I own a Humber 46 flybridge motor cruiser built in 1999 and my 8 battery's are in a large box in the engine space very close to my port tank however just phone a marine surveyer loads in the motorboat and yachting and he will advise but I really do think it matters. If good working in date auto extinguishers are fitted. PS good work. And all the best Mark

It seems like you are getting faster at accomplishing repairs as you gain experience. Not surprising actually, but each part of the project is getting done sooner because less time is needed to plan the work and find the best methods. You both are getting very skilled at rebuilding frames, stringers and other components. I hope the stem isn’t in too bad condition. That is a complicated piece to build and fit in place.
@phenogen8125 Жыл бұрын
That repair will probably prove very interesting; looks like for expediency it was over-plated; probably over a cement box fill. Worth carrying sheeting for emergency collision blankets and repairs as well as cement and shuttering. (been there got the T-shirt) Integral buoyancy should feature in the build.

Might be worth checking the British Marine Federation's Boat Safety Scheme. I believe the Boat Safety Scheme, sets a minimum distance between a fuel tank and a battery of no less than 30cm (12 inches) in all directions. Additionally, if a battery is being charged, it should be located in a well-ventilated area, away from any sources of ignition, and should be secured in place to prevent movement. Regulations vary with boat size and use.
@Dave5843-d9m Жыл бұрын
It will also depend on battery type. LFP is MUCH safer than any other battery chemistry and many times more energy dense than lead acid. There’s also no fumes while charging. You could put them up front, but the heavy connecting leads won’t be cheap.

I seem to recall for a lot of electronic components, a 10 degree rise in temperate causes the Mean Time to Failure to half (or there abouts). So if you stuff all your electronics in a tiny cupboard, they are more likely to fail.

laminating is a very strong way of making up mtimbers. Widely used in the construction industry. It is better to alternate the grain direction on adjacent lenths for max strength. Looking at the end grain if the 1st piece slopes right to left then the 2nd piece needs to slope L to R or be the opposite of the 1st.

Here's a suggestion a bit late now but here we go, keep a log book of your work, something along the lines of jobs to do, then on completion draw a line thru the entry. Its so rewarding to review this log as you progress, its like a battery recharge. I know you do the white board but soon as its finished its wiped, like where did all that hard work go? Your skills are improving all the time!

You 2 are getting fast with this work, and in the mean time Jemma is getting better in professional looking camerawork ;-) That port view was very funny. loved this episode, nice work going on. Maybe it's an idea to show better on the boat drawing what work you already did on it. Also show a bit which sections there are, I don't know if the engine compartment is right away stuck on the front part you already finished. It's gonna be soo cool when you will start on the deck.. It's gonna be such a difference. If anyone thinks this channel should have more subscribers : please like the video you watch. Hello you guys - I have a Dutch barge with a 4kw inverter charger mounted on the engine room bulkhead, and in operation it produces a lot of hot air from its cooling fan. So a closed cupboard is not a good place to mount one - at least not without enough ventilation! In the engine room, along with a half ton of lead acid batteries - it is of course ventilated by a couple of air scoops and a big vent fan. Richard Pentreath
@alstonofalltrades3142 Жыл бұрын
No idea on regs, But defo recommend ventilation for the batteries to escape even if it isn't regs! On my day off another reach truck driver had one of the battery cells go up with hydrogen gas coming out of it, as it happened he was passing an open warehouse door so drove right out fast and let it go in the air and... got away from it. This week I saw spirals!

Inverters and battery chargers are bridges between a boat's AC and DC power systems. The high voltage of the AC system presents a shock hazard and can be lethal if it exists on an ungrounded case. The DC system is not normally a shock hazard but can provide a lot of current, and so is potentially a source of fire. A suitable ground must not be be installed next to fuel tanks

Good idea to put together converters and batteries, that will keep wiring short, and the cupboard can be insulated and ventilated to keep temps low. I do not believe it will be a problem to have a gasoil tank next to it.

Isn’t there any way you could get her on the dry somewhere, I could imagine that you could cut down the renovation time quite a bit, I know there would be a cost to this so I know it’s a double edge sword. What plans do you have when she’s finished?
@philphil6006 Жыл бұрын
The provisions of this section of Part 3 in the 2002 BSS Standards are mandatory for non-private boats where applicable. To stop batteries from moving around, which could cause damage to their terminals and connections, or cause them to spill corrosive liquids over the boat, they must be securely fixed. A source of ignition, like batteries, must be kept away from potential fuel sources to reduce the possibility of fire or explosion. So, batteries can be kept in the engine room, but they must never be under or next to a petrol or LPG tank, cylinder, stopcock, pipe or filter. It's a good idea to keep your boat's batteries at least half a metre (around 18ins) away from any petrol or LPG equipment. If your batteries are kept in confined spaces in compartments it's essential that the build-up of flammable hydrogen gas is prevented. To achieve this, battery compartments must be properly ventilated. To prevent sparks being created by metal objects or tools touching the top of batteries, which could act as an ignition source and start a fire or explosion, the positive and negative terminals of all batteries must have insulated covers in place. Some batteries don't have individually covered terminals, and traditional batteries have exposed connectors between the cells - in these cases you must cover the whole top surface of the battery. Covering batteries will also reduce the likelihood of electrical sparks caused by touching the terminals with a metallic object.
